Goff Rockers - The Mörkley Krëw

So GW's recent release of the most excellent Goff rocker has seriously itched my ork and metalhead nerves, it's notthat easy you see a model without a weapon (if you leave the ammo belt and squig amp aside) just for the fun of it. On top of that, I always felt that my yet unpainted goff rockers were missing a 4th member  (even if there are several great examples of 3 heads bands). As often I usually seek any excuse to paint some models and this was the one, I had to paint the goff rockers !
Now having talented friends is a blessing but it's also a massive curse when those people get there before you, I often get a feeling of completion from my friends' work, feeling that I don't have to tick a particular box anymore, but sometimes, the urge remains and I have to do it myself as well just to get it off my head.
Go check the Mushrööm Klöwds by my man Sho3box (painted 9 years ago would you believe)

Now unlike my friend Paul, I'm a bit of a Metalhead myself so where he took his rockers towards the glam side of things (and the big hair, top hats and all certainly indicate it's the way to go), I tried to steer mine towards a more Heavy/Death shore (think early Pantera to late Pantera), keeping that in mind, I only kept vivid colours for the squigs (can't help it) and kept the rest in black leathers and jeans with not too bright hair to contrast.

The 3 string bassist is probably my favourite of the original 3 with his very punk attitude (I suspect Kev put a lot of his personal knowledge into that), the pose is absolutely spot on.

And the singer/lead guitarist, fantastic bit of Kev Goodness :

Now you can tell the new Goff rocker is a direct porting of that last ork into modern 40k, the top hat, squig, guitar and mic and all. It's a seriously good model, with a striking pose, great composition.
BUT
You saw this one comming right ? BUT I'm a bit of an obsessive type sometimes and my ork force is a complete love letter to Kev Adams's work and I just couldn't have the main guy sporting a head that wasn't his. On top of things, the new rocker makes me think of Ranw a little too much (although that's not wasted and that head migt very well find its way in another project.

See what I'm talking about ?

The easiest solution was a simple head swap of course and I just happened to have this excellent open mouthed orc from kev !

Boom ! Job done !

I reckon these guys are the Cavalera/Abott/Young brothers of the band with a powerful dynamic

I forgot to add the Slaanesh noise marine but that takes my miniature metalheads count to 10 with the Internal Organs Brofist !
I think the only logical conclusion to this is :
1) I now have to make a metal band for each of the Rogue Trader races
2) I need to organise a metal festival in my made up world (called Hellsreachfest or whatever

For now, happy painting to you all !

  1. Nine years... what the Mork...

Love these guys JB, we will have to get them defenestrating tri-d sets together.

    1. I know right ?
I've had the Internal Organs Brofist play a gig during a game but I would love a game focusing on rockers with anger and substance management issues

  2. Great looking bunch, and that head swap really makes the model fit so much better with the classics. Awesome work!

  3. Awesome stuff JB! This post is just full of cool stuff.

First you put in a Pantera reference - never a bad thing.

Secondly the head swap looks perfect and really ties the group together to the point that if one wasn't an old git like me who remembers the original Rockers release that it'd be almost impossible to tell that these figs have decades between them.

Hope you do manage to make those alt race bands - especially looking forward to the Tyranid Industrial Synth Collective.

    1. I have several ideas for the other bands, we'll see how it goes, it might be a slow burning project though !
Thanks a lot, glad you appreciated !

  4. Haha, I love it!! The head swap is a total win, it really improves the model. But as I understand this, you need to run some Battle of the Bands game for next BOYL. Hmm, you need to develop a ruleset...

    1. My warseer council for my Ulthwé army was actually a bunch of metal dudes (including Steve Vai and Devin Townsend) modelled on wardancers with their pants off (because). I really need to find those back

  6. Great work! I like the head swap: it works really well. I just painted an elf musician and I reckon you could assemble an Eldar classical quartet, but a rock band might be tricky...

    1. Rock and even its subgenre metal offer such a vast array of styles I'm pretty confident there's just the one for the job !
      Thanks !

  7. I keep seeing people post great painted versions of old models that are lurking in the bowels of my lead pile. I have these guys kicking around somewhere.. I originally had an ambitious plan to give them a little stage and everything, but I think teenage stuff got in the way.

Anyway, enough about me, these are stellar. And I really like how you integrated the originals with the new model. They look like a highly professional bunch of hotel room trashers.

    1. I wouldn't want to be their tour manager that's for sure !
Some projects stall because of overambitious ideas, if you have the 3 you could easily get those painted and then see if you have stamina to go further or not, I tend to break big projects into bite sized chunks now, the "how do you eat a whale ?" philosophy applied to hobby.
      Thanks !
