Rogue trader Janus Draik - Blackstone Fortress

Alright, quite a big leap from the Olleys I painted earlier I reckon, here's a new(ish) or at least relatively recent model (probably outdated by GW's infernal release standards) but one I'm really chuffed to have done since it marks the beginnings of my Blackstone Fortress project.
I've bought the box with plenty of ideas in mind and real life being what it is, guess what, nothing went according to the plan. The fact remains the box is packed with brilliant models and I have a use for each of them and when I'm done I fully intend to force friends into playing the whole thing ! ^^

Now of course I'm going to sketch a broad plan so the idea here is to do a few characters then move onto villains, one unit at a time until the whole thing is done. Good thing for me, the chaos part is (will be) completely compatible with my chaos force so that's two projects working in the same direction.

Now I had to pick a first character, why did I pick this one ? Well it's the main protagonist for starters and a decent character in game so there's that but then ... There's something else. I reckon few of those used to reading comics have missed it but this guy has a furious resemblance with a space vampire from 2000AD :

Now when I'm asked if I'd like to paint a vampire Hercule Poirot with Schwarzie's build ... IN SPACE, well sorry but all I can say is "why yes please".
Of course, all the Devlin Waugh you can channel in that model is already in the sculpt so I just worked on a classic paintjob which in hindsight is very close to the studio paintjob. Influencable JB.

Say what you will but there's also the fact that when GW is releasing rogue traders again after decades, I guess I'm dead center in the crosshair and I hate to disappoint so here I am !

Janus has found himself a rather weird but efficient sparring partner to try his new tricks on.
I love that the model's pose is openly casual, there was a great temptation to just remove the sword to make him a NPC to be honest.

"Sir, I urge you to reconsider and don't listen to that youth's non sense !"
"Do you know my age kid ?"
Anyway, the painting plate is full and I'm hungry so let's enjoy this while it lasts !

    1. It's a rewarding sculpt even if challenging, I could have put a little more effort in in places but it's a good one, thanks !

  2. Great paint job for a great fig. I'm fairly tempted to get blackstone fortress just for the player figs. I hear rumbles the game itself is a bit ho-hum (care to comment?).

    1. I purchased it for the models mainly but really mean to play the game as well (once it's all painted of course)

  3. I was so excited by Blackstone Fortress when it was released, and I've not even opened it!! This is a really top notch paint job on one of my favourite GW models of recent years. Lovely!

    1. Well, most models of the set have other uses in my projects so that should help with the painting ^^
I was also very attracted by the game itself but I'l have to wait a bit

    1. It's an intimidating box for sure, it's why many of us have got it but haven't really started it !
      Thanks !

  5. He's a very laid back personality isn't he. Has a quiet confidence about him, which is a nice change from GW's usual heroic poses schtick.

Great PJ on him JB. The striped pants and little swirl on his cloak are a nice touch.

    Great stuff mate :)

    1. Cheers mec, maybe I can still magnetise his left wrist to allow for an alternate hand ?

  8. Never understood the 'Devlin' character reading 2000AD as a kid but love him now. Miniature looks awesome!

    1. To be honest, I've never known much more than covers from reading Dredd, 2000AD wasn't exactly easy stuff to get here in France ^^'

  9. I prefer your paint job tbh, especially the head. The GW one looks like a ghoul but I think you captured the gentleman adventurer perfectly. Never heard of Devlin Waugh but I was a fan of Dredd in the 80s really. That top cover art has got to be Simon Bisley though. He is a god.

    1. I started with his head right away as I wanted it to be neat and to convey my idea of the aristocrat I believe he is. There isn't much space to play but the features are well defined andgreat. It's a fantastic sculpt.

  11. Forget Waugh, with that fencing sword and general air of sophisticated taste it bears a furious resemblance to you. You little Rogue Trader you.

And my kind of fencing requires two hands !
I'll take the compliment nonetheless you flatterer <3

  12. That smoke in the front view (2nd pic) is amazingly convincing!

    2. Life isn't worth sh*t when things can't get any better.

Looks like you desaturated the red glow so it look like there's smoke around the actual lit part. That needed to be praised. Marlboro's cowboy would approve this.

  13. Wow mate, probably my fav version of this lovely sculpt to date. You've done him up a treat. I am very tempted by Blackstone Fortress, but oof (!!!) the price of it....

    1. The boxes aren't cheap tbh but this one was a go because I'm interested in the game and I could use all the models outside of it so it's cost efficient for me (if I get to paint it all that is) ^^

  14. This is a great figure. He really screams Rogue Trader. I don't know how I can continue to resist Blackstone Fortress.

    1. The problem is that there are way too many things to resist so every now and then I tend to pick one I just let through the wall of reason ^^

  15. Blackstone Fortress abrite de très nombreux styles différents, surtout au niveau des héros. J'ai hâte de voir ce que ta peinture va donner dans tous ces registres !
