Tellark Spellrender - Dark wizard

I'm pursuing my quest to paint everything I owe to friends so here's a wizard from the February 1987 Flyer I've been given to paint by a friend some time ago now.

To be honest, the sculpt is a pretty crude one but it's got plenty of character to make up for it. I suspect it's an Aly Morison sculpt (feel free to correct me if wrong).
Now I have to say, the model is itching the OCD in me as I was required to leave the base as is so my friend could base it like the rest of his models (which makes perfect sense honestly). However, it means it's not "finished" and therefore is a bit frustrating (big problem I know).

I've honestly copied our good friend Piers Brand and his version because I'm a filthy cheater and mainly because his version was just great.

I have some other models finished actually and others quite close to being finished so January should be a good month in terms of output !

  1. Nice job! I would also bet on Aly Morrison for this model.

  2. I've not seen that one before. What a villainous looking mini, with a very sinister looking paint job. ;)

    1. The C series are a treasure trove, just checking the CCm wiki and I found some I didn't know and need in my life !

  3. Great character on this miniature, love it! I really dig that 5 o'clock shadow, something I have ever been able to pull off. How did you do it?

    1. It's quite simple really, I just stipple a mix of mechanicus grey and mat medium (lahmian from GW or any other) where I want the efect until I'm happy, if I'm a tad too heavy handed, I come back and do the same with the skin base colour to tone it done.

    2. Now that's advice you can take directly to the painting table! Thanks :)

  4. I like the OSL on the brazier. Very ghostly, instantly grounds it in fantasy.

    1. Thanks, I opted for something simple since the model doesn't have many details.

  5. The expression you gave him is just wonderful. I also really like the 5 o'clock shadow. It is nice and subtle. Well played!

    1. Those models from Aly always have plenty of expression so they're really fun to work with. Thanks a lot Matthew !

  6. You’ve managed to turn a relatively crude sculpt into something with quite a contemporary look. I know what you mean about bases, my figures only contribute to my finished total when the base is done - I’ve finished 8 this year, but they don’t count because of the bases.

    1. It is a rather crude model indeed, all the attention was put in the face and pose, the rest being secondary I believe but it's precisely what makes them work.

  7. Wow I have the suspicion that your paint job made that miniature look much better then it deserved!

    1. I just highlighted what was already there, those old models often have soft details due to their age but they still have fun in them !

  8. Have to say Tellark has always struck me as being one of the less exciting of the C02 Wizards, but in your hands he is transformed into something wonderous. Excellent job!

    1. They all have a certain charm you have to find, you won't find 2 alike in the whole series.
      thanks !

  9. Never seen this mini before. Love how you've done his face - the stubble is a well placed wash?

    1. This whole range is full of gems really ! The stubble is stippling with grey thinned with mat medium until I was happy actually.

  10. The sculpt is rather crude as the top of his head looks like it has caved in ... however you did a fantastic job painting him, especially his face, masterclass!!! :)
