The Scavvy King returns from the underhive

It's been a while since I last dwelled in the depths of the underhives of Necromunda. Luckily, I've been given 3 great opportunities to get back to it.

The first one is a little challenge on the Palatine Hive Facebook page, a page dedicated to that wonderful setting that confrontation is.

The second one is the very near release of Rogue Stars, a sci-fi skirmish game by Osprey which just happens to have several common points with Confrontation and which I'm really eager to play with. Oh, the fact there's a competition for the french version of Rogue stars might have motivated me as well...

The third reason is that I've had the luck to put my hands on a rather rare model and few things motivate me as much as putting my brushes on such minis !

Let's have a look at all the guys :

The Scavvy king is quite an elusive model and it's part of a whole range of extremely nice models designed and sculpted by no other than Jes Goodwin that simply got lost in the void between confrontation and Necromunda.
I just can't really understand why they left those aside since they fit so well in the later red era style but GW will be GW I guess...
The model is a tad "flat" (the start of the YMCA poses) but very charming and loaded with details. Unfortunately, the cast I got wasn't excellent and some details weren't exactly sharp while the surface was a little grainy. Obviously, I won't complain much about it as it remained a very pleasant model.

The king's right arm must probably be his trusted shaman. It's been a long time I was considering using this Nurgle champion (Jes Goodwin again) as an underhiver. It's just got everything, the weapon, the gear and the look is just too good.
It was quite nice to play with the skin tones and keep it sober enough to be convincing.

Now here's the first scavvy I've ever owned (must have got it 20 years ago) and which has remain unloved until I gave him a strange right arm and nothing more a while back. The idea of a one-armed duellist slowly grew on me and now I have to say he's one of my favourite. I sculpted him an empty left sleeve just to hint a potential past in the imperial guard or something like this. The fact a one-armed guy using a sword is still alive must be a good proof of his worth I guess...

Now here you have the basic trooper, Mr No Non-sense, using a sawn-off shotgun and cautiously waiting for his opponents to make the wrong move. The model is a very bad recast (only realised afterwards) so poor bits of plastic base had actually been left on the tab and recast with the model (can't think of any better proof than this really).
Once again, since the paintjob was going to be quite rough and gritty, it wouldn't be a major issue.

Now here's our ranger (poor recast as well) because in such hostile environment as the underhive, finding the proper supplies must be the primordial subject.
I've given him bigger arms than he should have on purpose, he's slightly on the mutant side but still closer to the human one. I quite like his sleeveless leather jacket with badges, it gives hims a spot-apoc/madmax look I quite fancy.

Here's quite the odd one in the group, a Marauder scavvy I got for cheap and just simply couldn't left aside dspite the clear change of style with the Goodwin ones. Bigger head, bigger hands and weapons, he's got all the signs of his origins but I like him.

I'm really eager to play these guys. From what I've got from Rogue Stars' rules, every member of your crew is very specific so I tried to push the concepts for each, so they're not just a bunch of average Joes but a real tool box of specialists.
I already have plans to extend the group to Necromunda size with mutants and weird creatures as well but this will be a bit later.
I thought these guys had earned an action pic so I tried to imagine what kind of daily life theirs is...

Scavenging the underhive unchallenged is not an option, by nature or necessity, only combat will determine those who'll get the king's share.
So here we are, with these guys, I'm reaching the 160 painted models milestone which is quite an achievement for my lazy self.
If you love scavvies as much as I now do, I invite you to have a look at my mate Colin's over his blog, he's got quite a fancy gang. ;)

I should have a couple more things done before nativity scenes, Christmas carols on TV and Food overdoses become our unbearable present.

  1. Special figures require special paint jobs and you've done a fine job on the king, JB. If there is poor casting, it doesn't show in the pictures. Shotgun boy's pose is very nice as well. They look great as an ensemble. Well done on completing the challenge!

  3. Nice - a Scavvy king. Bid on it a few times on eBay but don't think I ever been close to get it.
Cool work on the gang as well. Nice color scheme and what can be cooler than a old school Necromunda gang?

    1. For what it's worth, I would never even have bid on one, this one was kindly donated to me. I'm glad to have this gang ticked off the list although I want to add them a couple of things.
      Thanks !

  4. I never knew of that Scavvy King mini, but then again, I was pretty much out of touch with what GW produced (mini wise) soon after the red era. He definitely looks like he means business, a cool looking mini and you did a great job on him!

The Chaos Sorcerer mini was one that I had back in the day, but had no idea as a teenager of what to do with him. I chopped him up for bits & stupidly threw out the rest :( He's got a cool looking ugly mug hasn't he!

Have you got any WIP shots of the one armed bandit? A great unique mini conversion JB, well done!

The rest of the crew look good too mate! You've amassed (quite quickly I might add) a very interesting bunch of miscreants over the past few years.....very envious :)

    Cheers :)

    1. Thanks buddy, The King is actually pre Necromunda but was unreleased so that's a good reason not to know it right ?
I'm butchered my fair share of Goodwin champions back in the day, at a point, my whole hobby revolved around that !
I don't think I have a pic of the one armed guy before priming, I'll look to be sure but don't hold your breath. ;)

  5. Excellent painting as per usual, JB, and the colour scheme fits those minis like a glove. The idea of the one armed swordsman is wicked!

    1. Cheers, I have to say I'm quite happy with the colours in the end even though they differ from how I do things usually, it's very graphic but I think they're fit for that kind of schemes.

  7. Sparkling stuff JB! These are eye-catchingly colourful AND grimy at the same time. I love your one-armed duellist, but the scavvy king is, for me, the fullest and best incarnation of an underhive scab :)

    1. Glad you like them, I must be honest and admit I'm satisfied with the balance between eye-catcing and grim with these guys.
I'm also delighted to see my one-armed duellist gets approbation too !

  8. Every so often you generate something that I measure your subsequent work on JB. These guys - painted miniatures that almost seemed to appear over a single weekend - are that.

Serious bonus points for scavvies dressed in brightly coloured rags.

Just because a futuristic ghoul is likely dirty it doesn't mean that it dresses in dark age sackcloth.

    1. Cheers, there's actually just one really bright colour, yellow, and it's treated in a sufficiently dirty style to get along with the rest. You guys provided some good hep to settle on the scheme.

    1. Well, he's part of all those unreleased/uncatalogued gems that never made it under the spotlights for a reason. Until last weeks nthere were only 2 painted examples on the net, now there's 4 !
      Thanks a lot buddy !

  11. Wow, the King and his right arm are awesome. My scavy gag is still waiting for some paint. I particularly like the way you treated the breathing masks.

    1. Cheers mec, I just treated them as quite rusty and worn out really. I guess scavvies aren't too picky about quality !
I'd ove to see your own gang, get to work !

  12. They are right out of a John Blanche illustration. Your eye for details leaves me in awe (like the checkered pattern on Mr. No Nonsense's tunic, or the stripes on the Shaman's chest plate). I could look at these minis all day.

    1. Thanks a lot, it's even greater a compliment coming from you with your super easy to read models, something I often struggle with.
I guess the yellow + checkers combo does help tie these with the earlier Blanche style. I wanted something both graphic but easy enough to read for these guys.
      Glad you like them, really.

  13. I've avoided the older Confrontation models and the newer (1998+) Necromunda models as I work through the collection of 1995-97 stuff (~11 models to go now)- but I might have to have a go at grabbing one of the Scavvy King models now.

    1. The scavvy King and his Wizard acolyte are completely in the 95 style when you look ta the weapons and all. no doubt about it.
good luck though, they're not exactly easy to find !

  16. JB that's a special treat for me to see some of my fav Confrontation sculpts painted up so well. I only own one Scavvie mini now, the one you've shown with over-sized arms, but would love to hunt down the others to fill out my collection (in better financial times, of course).

I'm hoping Rogue Stars will prove to be a good set of rules. I almost backed the Nickstarter to get the minis range too, but then reminded myself that I already own far too many (Unpainted) random sci-fi minis as it is!

    1. The one I used to make the duellist is very common, you won't have any difficulty finding one for cheap really.
Thanks a lot for the kind words, they seem to have found their audience !
I've had a brief look at the rules preview and they have very promising feats.
