Turnip28 - The Black Root

Hey everyone ! With the prospect of the first Turnipcon in a few weeks and having been invited to take part, I felt like I needed to come with fresh miniatures (I just can't come with exclusively old models to any game) and I thought I could really use a big piece to represent a few of the cult options.

If you are unfamiliar with Turnip28, the armies all share the same basic troops but you can chose a cult "flavour" for them which unlocks a combination of new troops or/and additional rules that make them play a very specific way. It's a clever and easy system to avoid having a stupid amount of units but still having many different playstyles, I really love that mechanic.

Now with some of the cults using a big model in place of the general like the Rootshrine I really fancy, I've decided to make a giant mutated evil Turnip.

I knew I wanted a sort of Naopleonic statue head sitting on top of the giant vegetable to make it look "human" so started with this bit from the old giant kit to build from.

The rest was simply a matter of adding air drying clay to build a suitable body

That was the occasion for me to learn a bit better how to use it and how you can really smmothen it with rubber brushes and water

Now design and vibe wise, I was heavily influenced by Q. Hayashida's fantastic manga Dorohedoro (which might well be my favourite comics ever) so I made it a little weird and grim like the Mushroom Clones from En (the epic villain of the manga)

O now that I had my manga/vegetable/napoleonic monster's frame built, I could add a few details to make it fancy !

I've developped this head canon that the black root is an oversized evil turnip which got mutated into a sentient being contaminating all those it meets and draining the life out of them. It's no considered like a small deity worshipped by its followers. or something like that.
Painting wise I just painted like a giant turnip but with the purple parts black to make it evil, I made the skull buried into its flesh bleeding for visual contrast and to bring out the grim side of it.

I have a few more ideas for new units to bring to the event although I honestly have enough to play several options, it's a very refresho,g subject though so more a pleasure than a need
I hope you like this one and wish you a happy painting !
