Alright folks, a little time ago, I was lucky enough to win a scratchbuilt ork engine from Da Green One, I'll have to confess I couldn't exactly tell what this was but I knew it was excuting and I knew that my ork force (totally not an army, I will never get there) needed some vehicles so I threw my name into the hat and TADA ! I was lucky enough to win (with some help from nice people).
Here was the teaser :

Now the eagle eyed amongst you will have recognised the old Gunwagon (now OOP) minus the gun, making it some sort of heavy armoured battle wagon I guess ?
The idea was that I should do a little tutorial to go along the build so I tried to take pics at every major step of the process !
First part was obviously to prepare all the parts (there were quite a few) :
I sanded most of the parts to ensure a good surface for the glue to work on (little tip here : put your sand paper flat on the desk and move the parts across it always in the same direction, resist the temptation to go back and forth, it helps achieve a real flat surface where the back and forth motion tends to curve both ends)
A little glue work with added weight to let the tracks set real flat :
I also sanded the bottom of the whole thing to ensure the tracks were fully in contact with the ground at all points and avoid anyirritating wobbling. (Skeletons just having a laugh for scale purposes)
The wagon didn't have wheels so my good friend Papa Bear Mc Diddy Crooks came to the rescue and provided me with the perfect pair of wheels !
Now the dreaded moment of the undercoat revealing any problems !
I then loosely sprayed a ix of brown, orange and kakhi paints around the vehicle for a rusted base (I strongly got inspired by my my friend Shoeba9 O'Paulface for the rust part )
And drybrushed the whole thing with leadbelcher
Then it was just a (long and tiresome but necessary) matter of blocking in the base colours :
The rest of it was just :
- washes (brown and black mostly with some blue and orange to provide more variations)
- foam weathering with a dark neutral brown and leadbelcher
- rust streaks with skrag brown then cadmium red
- a bit of typhuis corrosion at the lowest parts
- silver lining on some edges
As you can see the wagon fits with the rest of the ar... FORCE and will be a great asset for some fast support !
A good portion of my orks are in suitcases but the one in my cabinet is slowly growing and it is a pleasant thing to see, there's plenty more of them to join ! I'm torn between epic and orks atm (not epic orks though for some reason... YET).
f I don't get the chance before, I wish you a very happy time for winter celebrations !

Stunning work 😀
ReplyDeleteYour army is growing quickly in huge proportion.
Well you know, my army days are totally behind me now, it's nice to have a LITTLE force now. ^^
DeleteThis is stunning work! Great plaslticard skill man :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, I merely put the pieces together, the build is not mine but Da Green One's, it's a fun build and I had a lot of fun painting it !
DeletePerfection !
ReplyDeleteLet's wait for the rest but we're getting there ;)
DeleteThat warband (which is totally NOT an army) is really coming together nicely.
ReplyDeleteCheers mec, the more I'm painting stuff for it the more I'm enjoying it I have to say !
DeleteThat is one lovely looking scratchbuild - I honestly would have thought it was an actual kit. The paintjob is perfect of course - the right mix of being colourful and consistent with the rest of the force, whilst being nicely and convincingly weathered. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI think the build and paintjob complement each other well, I didn't go for too neat a paintjob as it is a worn out vehicle in my mind and the textured body makes it work even better.
DeleteThanks !
I can never do yellow. I just don't get it, and here is another example of yellow done perfectly.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
Yellow can be tricky but there are tips to make your life easier :
Delete- a solid base coat is vital, apply a stupid amount of thin layers or a reasonable amount of thin layers with the appropriate paint (I LOVE the old foundation yellow, Instar does the equivalent I have yet to check)
- Glazes will help you blend the result and enhance the look if you highlight yellows with off whites like I do
Hope it helps, thanks !
Mec that's Waaaaaghtastic!
ReplyDeleteI hope so, I'm working no making it even more !
Deletethat looks great. I could do with one of them for my waaagh!
ReplyDeleteIt immediately feels more serious for a force to have a nice ride right ? ^^
DeleteAwesome work Sir and thank you for doing it proud and where it belongs. In a rogue trader army, (or warband ;) ).
ReplyDeleteThanks man, I had a lot of fun working on it, I was torn between getting it done soon and taking the time to add to it, I think I'll try and find a proper gun to add with magnets, that could be sweet right ?
That's looking great and exciting to see an army slowly come together.. Perhaps you can start thinking about tournaments next 😜
ReplyDeleteShadaaaaap ^^'
DeleteI honestly don't know where this is leading me, I'm actually really approchaing it as a sum of squads that are self contained projects and that happen to share the same colour scheme so eventually it should lead to something more ambitious than it ever was !
If I do get to an army sized force, I'll have to use the the whole of course ^^
This is fantastic! I like your trick with the underpainting of the rist. It really bulks up your not-army suddenly. What games system will this see outings under? There's a wealth of wagons for modern Orks to choose between, but if you're thinking of being all 2E then options are very limited.
ReplyDeleteIt really does make it more threatening right ? I'll probably use it for 2nd ed although I might heavily regret it ^^
DeleteIt shal find a way for RT or anything really, gaming is secondary for this force, I haven't used much if any of those boys in game actually.
I'm so in love with this battlewagon. I'm green of envy. Ork green, particularly. I love seeing this arm... this force growing.
ReplyDeleteGreen with envy is green nonetheless so that's good.
DeleteI'm really looking forward to the next few units to be honest.
Très belle collection, le style du véhicule est très efficace.
ReplyDeleteBonne continuation et bonnes fêtes de fin d'année!
Weathering for this battlewagon looks absolutely spot on! In the end, not too much and not too little. It's just right. :)
