The Ash waste pilgrim

So after all these Colony 87 models and Mordheim games, I thought it was time for me to get to work with... more colony 87models ! This time I'm going back to wave 1 because with 10 models done out of the 12 available, I feel compelled to finish the whole set (and it's more a pleasure than a chore really).

I picked this one as he seemd the most straightforward of the lot and I could go a little crazy on weathering. I know those sort of techniques can seem like "cheating" or like a cheap way  to get results but as a matter of fact I don't think there's such a thing as cheating in painting, there's only result and for this one, I just needed to get fast results with an intersting look.

I've used my usual recipe for rusted steel and then painted the clothing perfectly normally. The stains were just built with progressive glazes of different browns and then a slight wash at the bottom. I kept the colours simple because I want this one to roam ash watses (though I knw they're depicted as colourful and flamboyant in the confrontation background) and have a little post-apoc look to him.

Ash waste nomads are a group I'm eager to start working on really and I've been gathering th eproper models to do so. I've got a nice model to do the sci-fi equivalent of a pack mule for this guy and for th etime being, you can see him next to a couple of adventurers he could easily team up with !

That's all for now, more colony 87 models to come (2 actually), some more Frostgrave and some unexpected models too !
All in the next episodes of Leadplague !

  1. Nice one JB, lovely job on this - I have to say, this was my favourite C87 mini to work on, and you have certainly done it justice :-) Question for you - do you think this is male? I found myself wondering if 'he' was really a 'she' when I was painting it...

    1. Cheer smate, I have to say this one wouldn't have been my pick of th ebunch at first but painting it really revealed plenty of nice little details and the whole model is very characterful. You only truly know a modle once you've painted it and it's now one of my faves too !
I have to say I asked myself the very same question about the gender of this one and I actually really like that part of mistery actually !

  2. Nice work - the rust and grime are great. They work really well with the colour of the tunic.

  5. This one looks great JB!

I like the weathering & I to think that there's no such thing as cheating with painting.

I think this one is the pick of the bunch for me, very cool :)

    1. To be precise, the only cheating I can think of is getting your stuff painted by others and claiming it's your work ! Otherwise, done is good for me.

      Cheers buddy !

  6. Great choice of colours, as always. The clothes really put this character in the middle of a toxic desert. I could easily picture him/her leading some Brahmin in a radscorpion territory. Rusted metal is indeed great too.

  7. Pretty cool Assless. Looking at it it inspires thoughts of a desert cleric or a wandering healer of some kind.

    1. You know what ? This is exactly what I thought ! When doing the Rogu Quest Challenge, I was looking for a good cleric and here he was the whole time !

  9. Lovely! The weathering works a treat. I'd love to see a step-by-step of the rusted steel - it's incredibly effective. I can just imagine this poor guy following a pilgrim trail - hopping from one low-budget inter-stellar transport to another, trekking on foot for months at a time, visiting sacred shrines and paying a fortune to be blessed by priests!

    1. I've been using that rust effect a lot so I guess I could show a little "how to" next time I condider using it indeed ! It's really quick and simple. Just nee dto find the suitable model for it.
I think you have the same mental image of the pilgrim as I have. Oh but wait, yes of course... now I need a shrine.

  10. That looks really good. Another hand up for a tutorial on how you did that rust job. I've heard of people using hairspray in the process?

    1. The recipe is pretty easy, I'll think of a model on which to show it !
The hairspray method is more for when you want the rust to show through a damaged paintjob, here, I'm not even bothering about having something on top !
      Cheers man !

  13. Muted colour palette and use of washes really make this quite an endearing ash waster.

The helmet especially to me stands out.

    1. Cheers, I tried to stay away from anything eye-catching on this one and only kept the helmet with a contrasting colour to have a focus on the upper part of the model. The black to blue blending is not as good looking as the photo would lead to believe but it's good enough for the time invested. ^^'

  14. I have been a long time fan of your work but this mini is a whole 'nother level of awesomeness. I love everything you have done with it. Great job! Great! :)

    1. Wow, you're never short on nice words mate ! This one really was a warm up after a big week without any painting so cheap tricks and shortcuts only, those do give a sense of satisfaction that fuels for more work though so it's well worth using them !

    2. O_O ... this was just a warm up? Darn ... I feel so inadequate. It truly looks awesome to me. I guess sometimes the simplest things done well is waaayyyyy (too many A's and Y's?) better than the fancy schmancy stuff i.e. technique A over technique B supplemented by technique C ... you get what I mean. Anyways I stand by my initial reaction to this piece ... awesome ^_^

    3. You're kind but you're a way more skilled painter than I am really ! The paint chipping and weathering on the robe are just here to hide the fact that the robe is actually only highlighted in 3 steps (and not exactly blended in). No area has received more than 4 steps of work I think so it's just quick techniques I've used many times over just to get straight to the point. ^^

    4. I'm preparing the rust tutorial right now and you'll see it's just all bluff !
