Camilla Weis - Inquisitorial Rogue trader

Today's model is not particularly old for a change but it is one I've found attractive (from a modelling point of view mind you) since its release.

Since I got back to Rogue trader, I actually haven't painted a rogue trader so far. I know starting with an inquisitor figure may seem odd but what I love about Rogue Traders in this game is that they are highly eccentric individuals that are commissioned to accomplish plenty of mission for the Imperium (meaning they come in all sorts of styles and genres).

I chose this model because I really like the nobility of it and it's exactly that point that makes it a good Rogue Trader for me. Camilla Weis (that's her name) was born with a golden spoon in her mouth and she decided early in her priviliged life to fight boredom by visting remote places in the Galaxy. Her noble standard and relations even got her to be paid and commisionned by the Imperial authorities for it. She has somehow built a contract with inquisitorial authorities thanks to her mutation free genes (Thanks to living in a friendly environment) and she usually explore new planets or inspect known ones and then reports on potential chaotic threats so that the inquisition can decide to send proper inquisitors or not, depending on the reports (That would make her an external auditioner in today's sordid society).

But what are Rogue traders?

The Book of the Astronomican provides some very funny examples of Rogue traders illustrated by the excellent Ian Miller who introduces a good deal of Grim darkness on top of the tongue in cheek description of these individuals :

And you can see style wise you can really go to town with those :

I really need to make a model for that one at some point...

Painting wise I had no real hoice for Camilla, as soon as the model hit the table, my 4 years old daughter immediately realised she was a girl and THEREFORE had to be painted in pink. After some heated discussions we came to an agreement that I could paint her armour black and give her a pink robe (that was tough).

I have to say that I started this the VERY bad way and pink is definitely not a colour I'm familiar with... Thanks to some precious advice from talented painters I got out of my misery.
You can notice I tried something a little fancier than just boltgun metal + washes on the sword, it's inspired from NMM techniques but using blue tones to suggest some sort of energetic crystal. I'm not really convinced by it but I'd say it's neither really good nor really bad so that will do.

While I definitely want to give Camilla a small retinue, I believe I can take my time to think about who I want to join. For now, she has met some representatives of the Squat Heavy industrialist Union which she has hired for some scouting and surveying on planet Pom 13. There's a worm in that apple and she has to find it to make her report to the inquisition. Working with the inquisition is as rewarding as it isunforgiving, if she misses one stain of corruption she can be charged for even worse than the corrupted she's meant to find...

Anyway, with Camilla out of the painting range, I see a little clear sky ahead to start some cool projects and put an end to some very old and abandonned ones...

New things and Old things, that is what awaits you in these pages !

  1. Top drawer JB, the sword is great and your should consult your daughter regarding palette decisions as a matter of course in future.

I love that sculpt, it is the business.

    1. Well , she got it good this time but you see, she picks the pink pot and the orange one a bit too easily for anything really so I might not be that lucky next time. She will have her say though as the first time was a good one.

The sculpt is indeed excellent indeed though I found it terryfyingly sharp and crisp for my brush and hand acustomed to the softer details of old lead. That said it is always good to change habits.

Many thanks for the kind words !

  2. Is that mauve? Whatever, the purply-pink is lovely and her retinue is absolutley spot on . Good work fella!

    1. It is pink (or rose in french) highlighted with bone an dwhite with some purple wash in the recesses.

She will have her own retinue but I wanted to make a little nod towards Richard's inquisitor !

      Thanks a lot !

  3. Very nice JB. :)

You must start including some shots of the rear of your models, I can't see her bow on the back ;).

    1. WoW ! Thanks !

I normally always add a rear shot because we only get to know half of a model otherwise but this time it must have got out without me noticing...

Now you can see the back of the bow (naughty you) don't ask me how the arrow stays in place...

  4. I like it, JB. Brave of you for attempting new colours plus the fact it's on a crisper, newer model. You've come up trumps with it, I'll add. Creating your own Rogue Trader Zuckerman would be a challenging project!

    1. Challenging indeed but someone ahs to do it ! Thanks for the kind words, at least I've learnt something here when working on colours with very low coverage. I'm really used to dark rich tones so exploring pale ones was a necessary discomfort to progress !

    2. Same here really; very rarely do I begin with a light base.

    3. I had been really careful about building the base colour with as many thin layers as possibles until I had a nice smooth base. I then ruined everything by giving a big purple wash... I had to correct it to then carefully build my highlights with pink and white. I had learnt th elesson with yellow but made it again with pink...

    4. I'm always reluctant to use inks on light bases. Yellow is another potentially dangerous path. Went off it in a big way some years back but trying to coax it back into my life.

  5. Wow! I was taken aback a little when I read your caption about Joff Zuckerman. I was thinking the exact same thing last night when I was flicking through the Astronomican......strange huh?

Not sure what would be the best base mini to build him up from though. He's got a lot of custom gear on him, might be easier to sculpt a mini from scratch rather than trying to kitbash an accurate rendition of him. Anywho, he's an ace figure, tis a shame Citadel never brought him to life.....in lead form ;)

Oh, and nice RT there JB :)

    Cheers.

    1. Aha great minds....

It's true the full sculpting way would be nice but I'm pretty sue some kitbashing is possible here, I always keep such projects in mind when looking at new models.
      Glad you like her ;)

  6. Camilla Weiss and the seven dwarv...er squats! Great work. I always regret not picking up more of the models from the Witch Hunters/Daemonhunters codices, although I notice many of the models are still available from GW for exorbitant sums.

    1. Every no and then we can see some very interesting releases and this one was one of such. I didn't get it when it was released but came across one on trading page on FB and saw a good occasion to paint my first rogue trader (since no offciail model or rogue trader was ever released AFAIK.

      Thanks a lot !

  8. Interesting use of an Inquisitor as something else entirely. I can certainly see it as a rogue trader.

There are actually three of this model with different equipment and details, as was common at the time of release. I have another version on my workbench at the moment (the one with the null rod cane), although she is headed in a full "crazy inquisitor"direction with an eviscerator...

The paint job is ace, particularly the sword which gives both a NMM look and a "power sword" look, allowing you to decide which it is. I suspect that one could probably do something similar in another shade (red for instance) and make it more obvious that it is an energized blade, something I might have to try out.

    1. Cool, glad you like teh sword, I wasn't too sure about it really. I hesitated between version, I just knew I didn't want the one with mace. I chose the one with crossbow because it reminded me of the imperial adventurer and the fact you can actualy really get Xbows in RT.

I'm eager to see your version now !

  9. Man, you just took this to another totally different level. This kind of project is what truly inspired the RT atmosphere from its very origins. Hats off, you acomplished an amazing task.

And congrats to your tiny external consultant too! She has an eye for this! :)

    1. I'll pass congrats to her (though she's more interested in sweets...) !

I didn't alter the model at all here so all I did was paint her with RT in mind, I guess it shows a bit ;)

      Many thanks !

  10. That lovely cool pink is great JB - what paints did you use? Camilla is a great choice of figure - definitely a high class chick! That range from the 2000s has some lovely figures.

    Nice work :)

    1. The pink is based on emperor's children pink with leviathan purple as a shade (you want to skip that one really) and then highlights by adding bleached bone at first and then white

  11. What a great fig. I didn't realize that she had a big bow on her back till I started reading the comments. Lots of interesting details on this one. I quite like what you've done with the sword. It looks good, but it doesn't draw too much attention away from the rest of the model.

    1. Thanks. I thought with a pink dress, the rest of the model has to remain quite discrete to avoid the whole figure to be messy and overflashy. Glad the sword doesn't prove too over the top !
