The sword of echoes - Undead champion of chaos

Quick one today with a model painted for a friend as a token of gratitude for his continued excellence and kindness. I've meant to paint him a little something for a while but never could find what to do until he just sent me tis guy along another that should get painted soon enough... ^^

The model is the champion with his Sword of Echoes from Knightmare miniatures and has been designed by the most excellent David Stafford/MrSaturday specifically for the Pantheon of Chaos range. With Kev Adams' talent added on top, this model is obviously pretty cool.

Design sketch by David Stafford/Mr Saturday
I had no particular brief (apart from leaving the base blank which I stupidly forgot) but since he was meant to be the leader of a chaotic Mordheim band, I went for something suitably evil and neutraly chaotic.
I think I wold have painted him as a former champion of Law with weathered armour and all if it was for me.

He's a tall fellow, suitably menacing for a leader and just creepy enough to avoid being mistaken for a regular trooper.
Have fun !

  2. Very nice indeed. I do like that pink into black transition you've been doing recently (or was it pink to purple on the chaos squats?). Great stuff!

  3. Lovely stuff! Great to see him getting the JB treatment. The colour transition on the maggots looks great.

    2. Refining a technique isn't the same as laziness.

You don't learn to play a song so that you never play it again.

There are times for old recipies and for new ones, and the best items are usually a mix of the two.

  8. It turned really great man! Good job on it, since we saw David concept we knew the model could be really great, and it was :)

    1. It really is a good one and I've been suggested it could make a good Aekold Hellbrass model which is very true !

  9. The skeleton is just a skeleton. It's the purple worm creature using it as a puppet you need to be worried about....

Is there any info on the sword of echoes beyond the evocative name?

    1. I think I remember th ebackground behind him stating it's the sword that controls the tentacles and hence the warrior.

    2. That's the story. The sword attracts warriors with whispers of victory and glory. Once picked up (usually from the dusty remains of the previous wielder) it takes control of the victim's body and proceeds to embark on a slaughter spree. The victim eventually dies of thirst, and as the body rots the sword sends it's tentacles into the body like roots to bolster or even replace parts that fall off. Eventually the body disintegrates and the sword has to wait for the next warrior to happen along.

  12. Nicely done. Reminds me I have this figure somewhere. Now I just have to wait a suitable amount of time to forget that you've painted it so I won't cry every time I bring the brush to bear on him.

  14. Great piece. I like the fades through purple on the worms/intestines.

The chunky oblongness and cloak combination put me in mind of the classic Warzone Alakhai model: http://bloodybeast.com/blog/2010/04/12/alakhai-the-cunning/

  17. Reminds me of a D&D Morhg with all those worms - lovely sculpt.

Good choices too on the colours, from your typical rich red on the cloak to the worms themselves which look quite lifelike.
