Alright everyone, now amongst this very unexpected but enjoyable chaotic derailing of my painting queue, there has been an unexpected but enjoyable disturbance (it wouldn't be fun otherwise).
My friends Grove and Crooks were just posting awesome WIP pics of chaos champions up to the post where the urge to build myself one was unbearable.

The doomed one rising from the bits box - Battle chaos part 19
Last time I showed you Kaleb's new embodiment he was just a pile of bits roughly assembled with blutak and some magnets.
I added a big putty roll around each receiving part and pressed the chest part on them the way it would be when assembled (I also used saliva to be sure the fresh Duro wouldn't stick to the wrong part). This gavec me the print of the chest part. Once dry I only had to cut off all teh exceding material and do a nice putty blending to reach this state :
You can see on the picture above I've started to alter the axe to give it teeth, the next step being the lower jaw.
Another great interest in using magnets to assemble parts is that you can paint less parts (the chest goes for both mounted and on foot versions) but you can also give the mini different attitudes :
This magnet strategy also allows me to give an alternate head to represent Kaleb after a long time romaing in the wastes, his vital energy being drained from him by his powers (needs hair but you get the idea) :
And at the end of his journey, I can even assemble him as a chaos fiend in a "Pete Taylor way"
This time I'm going to show you a little more.
The next step after drilling and placing the magnets was to create a joint of both receiving parts (the legs) so that the chest fits nicely on them. I started from this :

The very same was done with the heads.
Once this part was done, I could go on with the actual building process !
The building process happened yesterday night and nothing nor anybody was there to stop me so I guess I overdid it a little... I found so many bits I wanted to try I may have used too much.
(I had to use the wolf cloak, giving a mini something sculpted by Jes always reassures me since it can't be a total failure with JG parts)
Another great interest in using magnets to assemble parts is that you can paint less parts (the chest goes for both mounted and on foot versions) but you can also give the mini different attitudes :
| Dreadaxe, you're my weapon and I will always love you, you know that? |
| Morning everyone, my name is Kaleb and this is Dreadaxe, my daemonic axe aiming right at your skull. |
And at the end of his journey, I can even assemble him as a chaos fiend in a "Pete Taylor way"
Next time I'll do the base and show him aside his oldschool version just to have a laugh.
Cheers

Death from above - Manticore conversion - Battle Chaos part9
Okey dokey, so now we've had a little view of the general aspect of the army, it's time to make things grow a little bit. Can a decent army only be lead by a guy on foot with regular gear? Naaaah
This mini is a bit special in the fact that it was designed for the army book two editions before the current one. At the time, there was no manticore in the book and the only flyingmount available was the chaos dragon entry. I decided to start with a daemonic steed. One month after that the next army book was realeased and with it, the possibility to mount your Lord on a Manticore. I examined the converted mini and found a pair of wings would fit properly near the elbows. The steed in itself being designed as a mutation, the strange overall feeling wouldn't be a problem.
I started with archaon as a base with the addition of Carnifex legs to make it look more muscular and with the arms of a plastic chaos spawn. I used one of my favourite heads frome the spawn sprue, the one with a human head and what appears to be a cylinder in its mouth. With a little gren stuff here and there and a quick weapon swap, I had my brand new Chaos lord on Manticore :
The idea is that the lord here is still Lothar (cf. to my first posts) a few years later, when he has gained power. His mount is meant to be an imperial wizard he has captured and mutated by shutting its mouth with a magical device (the cylinder in its mouth) thus making him incpapable of letting all his magic out in order to accelarate his mutation.

For those who fancy such music, I would add "Mutation of the cadaver" from Cannibal Corpse was a very strong inspiration for this mini (as well as for many of the Chaos and Undead armies) and especially Jack Owen's solo at 2'35...
What sort of songs would be your inspiration ?

At your command (take2) - Battle Chaos part5
To give some extra power to this army, I thought about adding the Chaos lord on daemonic mount since the mini rocks and it's a perfect generic hero since I still want Lothar (cf. part1) as the general in every game size (I'll build versions of him on mounts and all but that's for later...).
For this mini as for many others I used a special recipe for metals I use a lot since I find it good looking and very rapid to apply.
It mainly consists of a very generous "tin bits" drybrush followed by a more subtle "boltgun metal" one (feel free to use the equivalents since none of these are produced anymore). And then comes the nice part.
I use a mixture composed of :
- 2 drops of black ink
- 2 drops of brown ink
- 1 drop of PVA glue
- about 10 drops of water
I'm looking for a mixture that does not cover much but will leave a thin layer on big surfaces and drown the holes. I then just need to highlight with boltgun metal on the edges and with mithrill silver on the tips.
I've also recently added some conversions and missing dudes to the rank and file units (ie chaos warriors and marauders) :
The first marauder is a lady I designed because I had the remaining legs of a chaos warriors (you'll see an undamaged version of him in little time) and the torso of a 4th ed daemonette. The three others use parts of minis taken from an old MB game to help me go from a 25 to a 30 men unit. I wanted a drunken marauders because maurauders ravage, kill, rape and drink. I think the weapons leave no doubt for the first two activities. I'll have to work on the remaining one.
The warrior on your left (If you're reading this facing your computer that is) is built from two different Khorne champions and a halberd taken from onf of the new chaos knights (the undamaged champions are also on the painting range right now). The one on the right is a very conventionnal interpretation to match the ones presented before.
