Rogue traders, the last front... oh wait, I'm getting things mixed up sorry. Rogue traders yes, what more iconic character in the 40k universe than those that gave their title to the very first edition ?
There are a few which have had their name written in the stars of g33k fame but this one is probably my favourite.
A tad over the top ? Without a doubt. What would you expect from a man who can summon companies of marines and Imperial guards in the blink of an eye ?
Now Diego from Knightmare miniatures has had the good idea to ask Kev Adams to sculpt his interpretation of the character for us to paint.
This one was one I've been thinking about kitbashing but so far laziness had always prevailed so when the model was announced, I jumped on the occasion.

The model is not exactly scaled like the usual Rogue Trader model but a tad bigger like what you'd find in later editions, it still is a very fine and extremely pleasant model to paint and Kev Adams still has magic in his hands I can tell you.

You might have noticed I did alter the backpack a bit to stick a little more to the original picture and to make it slightly less imposing, it's just a section removed on the upper exhausts and the lower ones removed but I find it does make a difference.
Luckily enough for me, the original picture depicts one very grim character with a fully worn out and weathered armour and gear so I could get a little messy myself !
This one didn't take long to paint, maybe 3 sessions at worst and it was a fairly straightforward process helped by the fact I just had to replicate the original colour scheme (there is a joy from time to time in turning your brains off).
Anyway, I'm chuffed to bits from having this guy ticked off, these sort of projects are very rewarding for me !

I love this model! I backed the kickstarter but have not painted mine yet. I have issues with the way the backpack fits so I will be altering mine as well. The paint job is awesome. Joff Zuckerman is the best Rogue Trader ever.
ReplyDeleteIn all fairness, I even considered doing another smaller backpack but I was too eager to paint the model so just filed it thinner to make it fit with modified exhausts.

ReplyDeleteI was looking to build him last year myself for the INQ28 Ready Your Retinue, but never really found the impetus to carry it through. Is this a one off batch or do you think it'll be peddled at BOYL17?
Don't think it will be a one time thing but I don't believe Diego is attending BOYL so a quick PM might answer al those questions ! ^^

ReplyDeleteC'est vrai qu'au final il est un peu terne car je voulais pas partir dans qqchose de trop riche mais la teinte jaunâtre de l'armure et les teintes plus chaudes de la peau auraient pu être intéressantes.

Wow, great figure, and an amazing paint job. I particularly like the bionic arm, something about that weathered industrial yellow is really appealing.

The left one is kind of hard to understand, I get from the picture it's leopard skin or something of the kind but it's sculpted with recesses and weird shapes so I just followed the sculpt.

Truly fantastic. I haven't (already) got that mini as I'm still climbing the lead mountain, but I no doubt plan to have one of my own. I guess I'll use yours as a reference, it looks gorgeously badass!

I like how you paid special attention to the faint detail i.e. the green triangles on his cheeks & forehead. If you don't squint at the illustration you'll miss them :)

Looks like there's a few others commenting about having a crack at making him too! I better get a wriggle on and finish mine huh :)

Superb stuff mate! Was in a similar boat as you and had planned a kit bashed project of him somewhere down the line. Relieved that K.A. has saved me a laborious job. There's been one or two fine efforts (yourself included) in the last week or so and a very high bar has been set.
