Hey everyone,
So at the end of the month, I have the pleasure to go meet a bunch of buddies to play some Cyberpunk so I had to get a band ready ! My mate Michael kindly printed me some zoners so I didn't have the hassle to figure what band to do or what models to pick, I just painted what was offered !
The models were absolutely lovely and exciting and printed to the best quality as usual.
Now of course, with cyberpunk, I had several ways to go, would I go a Bladerunner, GitS, Akira or maybe like the latest Cyberpunk : Edgerunners show (which I loved).
The obvious answer was YES so I tried to pick a bit of everything to incorporate, opting for a more colourful approach though. Now I'm gonna address the elephant in the room right away : I wanted cool neon effects to make them stand off so I took teh airbrush out and sprayed some white ink foloowed by some fluo pink but let's just say I need A LOT more practice than this than the couple of tests I did on blanks with an airbrush that required a thorougher clean up before attempting any of this.
This is why the models look... well not as good as they were before. The effect certainly does work at tabletop distance so they're not unplayable by any mean, they just don't look great at arm's length and even worse at photo distance.
I was on a rush and I make poor decisions in these cases, it would have been better without the effect, no question, I should have trained and applied that effect when I was sure I was able to pull it off but I sometimes take bets and it just didn't win this time.
Anyway, I reckon enough of them are good to play so while we're at it, I might just drink the cup to the last drop.
I haven't read much of the rules so I'm not even sure what roles they're gonna be playing, I just checked they could fit and they did but I won't be able to tell you about precise roles this time. The fella above will be the street king, that's about the only thing I know.
The next guy is pretty cool, I tried to give him and the others a sandy colour for all the bionic parts, like it's made of plastic/ceramic (except the street king who has flesh like preosthetics) to show they're not the most expensive ones
I really struggled not painting the next one like major Kusanagi from GITS
but that would have felt too OTT, I like her better as a street level thug.
Now the next one could have also very well been painted like Rebecca from Edgerunners :
But once again, I wanted something a little different
The next one was probably my favourite of the bunch before I messed up badly, sorry ...
This rioter got away with the accident, because the effect was mainly on his hand, he does look like he tried to paint a car with his bare hand
Now the next one also has a strong David Martinez look which I couldn't avoid so went with it partly... then messed it up... :/
I had planned on having more military/guerilla style zoners to represent the fact they come from various backgrounds with privileged kids gone rogue to tough veterans who've been struggling since birth
Now the last one surely got the most horrible fate of the bunch, there are some angles though where he does look cool but this is definitely not the case in the picture. The airbrush was clogging by that time and I should have noticed it, I trusted the process which had kinda worked on the test subjects and once messed, there's little to do to "fix" that, you live you learn.
So that's all for today, I'm not as angry as I thought I'd be, I messed, I'll learn and I'll mess again on something else in the future, I did try to get out of the comfort zone so I'm keeping a positive mindset about it and I can move on to the next project without feeling down. I'll have a great time being with beloved friends, having giggles and all and that's all that matters, happy painting to you all !
Close up photos are always so unforgiving. They look great in the group shot (and I imagine on the table). Did you just blast them with some neon pink in an airbrush at the end? Or is there a more involved/sophisticated technique?
ReplyDeleteThey really are unforgiving, they'll be good enough on the table top though. I tried following the usual recipe of a white ink blast followed by neon pink filter but my airbrush wasn't thoroughly cleaned so the spray was messy and I got too heavy handed on the filter because I couldn't see the effect at first. I'm really a beginner when it comes to airbrushing and I lack the patience and tend to be too brutal with it I reckon.
DeleteI made the same mistake... if you really want to finish once you see dots that start to appear, think about pulling the trigger for air not pointing the mini, then placing it and only then send the paint on the airbrush.
ReplyDeleteThey do mook cool though, don't worry too much !
That's a good point, It's a single action I have though but a double action and a bit more care cleaning it would have solved part of the issue.
DeleteThanks !
JB I think you're being a little tough on yourself. I think on an appropriately decked out table with Cool theme'd C-Punk terrain these guys would look super cool. Even without that I like them a lot. Hope to see them on the game table in a future post!
ReplyDeleteThey're salvageable but I as looking for a wow effect and got an ewww effect instead ! ^^'
DeleteThanks for the kind words though !
