Stargrave family party

Hey all ! So with summer over, painting can start again and I've finally managed to finish the first part of a challenge started at the beginning of summer with the whole family. I've been thinking about playing some games with modesl with my family (that's 4 kids and 2 adults) and when I received my Stargrave Scavenger set I immediately knew I had the perfect opportunity !

We spent a morning looking for bits, letting them pick whatever they wanted, cut, glued for them and did the putty work where needed.

The next stage was having them draw the characters to tell me how they wanted me to paint them so I let them go wild and once that was done, we wrote the rules for each of the characters so that they could really make them their own.

I didn't get much painting time this summer but just a little more than a month later, I'm glad I got them all painted, including models for the woman I love and yours truly.

Let's take a look at the characters :

Nitch is Valentin's character, he's a cyborg who can create an control robots, he's also quite a stealthy fellow and is obviously well versed in hacking

And here is the scheme I had to follow, easy to follow and paint, clear, straightforward.

Now here's Laura's character Natura, a hunter who is specialised in calling animals, controlling animals, maintenance and also a bit of a fortune teller who can give first aid when needed.

Here's the brief I had, quite clear about what to do, I have to admit I first had a block at the colour scheme which breaks every colour theory rule I tend to follow so it took me a while to wrap my head around it until I realised I just had to paint by the numbers really. It's still not as saturated as she intended I guess but I guess I still have some artistic interpretation !

Next one is Toko, Alice's Mystic, you can't deny the strong jedi influence and it's no surprise the character has powers like void blade, lift, mind control or dark energy !

The brief was as easy as the model itself so no real challenge here, I was in common territories. I did like the details mentionned asking for rust stains on the blade and some greenish ligh in the palm of the hand.

Next is Violetto, a psyonicist with powers like force wall who can also pick locks, summon drones.

Of all the briefs, this one was the trickiest, I had to ask Diego to colour the parts since he had only put a line of colour in each section out of sheer lazyness. I was almost tempted to keep the model white and only draw lines of colours on the parts but we got to it and the very loose instructions meant I could play a bit with colour arrangement and despite it being colours I barely ever use, I ended up liking the process on this model.

Next was Louise's character, yet unnamed and rules to be found but I had a brief of an amazon with wings so made proposition of parts and kitbashed  accodringly, the face looks probably stronger than I wanted but it's a character

I obviously had to make myself a character who will probably be more of an NPC since I'll be GMing the whole thing (I actually have a whole campaign drafted with the first couple of games to gauge interest and response.
He'll be Zab, a galactic rogue whose powers will probably only be known in dire situations I guess !

So here we are, a nice project that can lead to some great time and bonding (unless every member of the party murder each other) but that's also a great opportunity to work on team work and communication hopefully and have a lot of fun.

You'll know in the battle reports !

  3. At first I was unsure if I'd clicked on the right blog - those colours, surely not JB's typical palette? :)

Loving this project though. Smashing way to get the family involved and hopefully teach the little'ns a simple gaming system and story that will keep their attention and be fun at the same time.

Good luck herding those cats though - when I tried to run a dnd adventure for my three nephews I almost gave up with all the infighting, attempts at backstabbing and npc murders (Even though I made it VERY clear that their characters were to be heroes)!

    1. I know I'll have to keep tings tights and fast in order to keep their attention but I hope it builds up over ime and we can get into deeper scenarios.
Those were a very unusual palette though, it felt odd the whole time for some of those models !

  4. Oh, man, the whole thing is pure awesomeness, from the beginning to the end. The way you involved everyone here and how the concept art and minis relate is simply delicious. Congratulations, well done!

  6. Excellent work! Your family have some great ideas, and the scavengers box set is really good for conversions like this.

  7. it's awesome how u turned this into a family project. love the illustrations of everyone's character then into an actual miniature and the little bio/character info was fun to read. great job.
since I've been deep into DnD this would be a cool idea to create a "gang" for Spelljammer or whatever within the lines of the rules.

    1. Thanks ! Building characters was great fun, they're kinda shy about the whole "do what you want" aspect at forst and then go absolutely crazy up to the point you have to cool them down and they're all "but you said ANYTHING !"
