Brattish authority - Leader and Juve

Painting is like riding a bike it seems, it comes back pretty rapidly even after a long pause. To get a bit of motivation back I had put all chances on my side though : Goodwin models, a sculptor I enjoy and whose work I'm familiar working with, Confrontation models, one of my first loves and limited edition ones on top of that.
Well it worked out exactly like planned for once. Pleasure was here. Oh yeah , sweeet sweeeeeet pleasure, my hair caressing their... erm... Good fun, if you see what I mean.

On top of that, my recent Shadow wars campaign had taught me I needed some reinforcements for the Bratts since any casuatty was putting me in a difficult position with just enough models to make a team.

Now the first of them is obviously a leader, perhaps one of the best looking of the unreleased models in the whole Bratt line. If it wasn't for the very peculiar combi pistol, it's a perfect model really.

His friend is more of a Juve. The sketches published for the bratts seem to point this model is a Fright Knight :

And although it was quite tempting to paint it as Boy George after getting very inspired by Adam Ant, I opted for a more hip hop flat top to avoid any resemblance with Bart simpson.

I also like to paint models I don't know well as I get to discover little details like the Karate hand protection on the Juve (painted with a flame pattern for extra street cred) and plenty of small jewels and ribbons everywhere on the leader.

The band is now 6 models strong with still opportunities to add more models from my Helmawr gang and all so I'm quite happy with it really.
Let's try and harness this renewed motivation into something constructive !

  1. JB these are simply lovely! Love how they are all coming together. ;) The leader is definatley a cut above. You did and excellent job on him. With the stubble, and the hair jewels. I'm digging the partial glow on he sword as well. Awesome stuff mec. ;)

    1. The leader is something else I agree, they've all been fun to work on so far !

  3. Fantastic JB. Great to see these painted, not sitting in some anal retentives drawer too.

  4. Fantastic! Love the array of colours you've used on the leader. The purples and oranges vary the palette, but there's still a strong unity to the paint job. It encourages me to experiment, as my palette is usually quite limited on any given figure.

    1. I really have to kick myself to expand my palette sometimes, I tried to find colours that would match with the existing colours but which would broaden the spectrum used for the leader.
      Thanks a lot !

  5. Great work on some awesome figures! This is a great group and it really is a mystery as to why these were never released.

    1. Well the leader does have a rather strange gun and I suspect the Bratts were stepping on Harlequin grounds too much visually speaking... who knows !

  6. You really nailed the sunnies JB! I'm not sure if I've asked you before, but the guns, how do you paint them NMM again? My attempts usually fail and I just go back to the GM and black wash....which doens't look as good as NMM :(

I'm didn't get into the Bratt's back in the day, so I don't know the range much. How many did they end up producing? Have you got most, if not all of them? How many more are in the offing?

    Stella work all round mate!

    1. NMM ? What's that ?
Kidding !, No I never do any NMM, the gun are german grey with a Nuln oil wash and then edge highlighted as sharply as I can to give that semi shining feel.
I'm far from having them all but there are far more unreleased than released for sure. One of them is impossible to obtain so I'll happily keep with what I have !
      Cheers mec !

      Thanks !

  8. That Juve is excellent, he clearly has aspirations as he is 'out-badassing' his leader. Obviously an up and coming ganger!? Lovely work, as always. (:

  9. Smashing stuff JB, they look really great. Extra points for getting these lads under the brush too. I'd love to give them a slap under the new rules at some point.

  10. You've done a lovely job picking out all the tiny piffly details on the Bratt Leader – boot ribbons and other touches. It looks brilliant. I've never seen this particular model before. Well envious.

    1. That's Jes' sculpts really, always plenty to play with !
I don't think I'll be able to fund any more models for this band but these have been quite fun !

  11. Painting is muscle memory in a way I guess. I noticed I can now paint small details without my hands shaking even after a long lay off (no mean feat for a coffee-holic) compared to when I first started when my hands shook like crazy. :) They look great and if anything was missing it would be a weaponised guitar ;)

    1. There sure is a fair amount of muscle memory I suppose which is a relief in a way !

  12. I'm just impressed you even own these hard to find minis, let alone paint them up so well. Excellent additions to an already outstanding gang JB.

Are you excited for the new Necromunda?

    1. I am quite lucky when it comes to finding miniatures and I also have very precious and talented friends !
      Am I excited ! God yes !

    1. They're not exactly the most famous models since one is unreleased and the other wasn't catalogued... ^^
Very nice Goodwin goodness though !

  14. Those are fab! I've put off painting my Bratt leader for several reasons, not least the fact that I'm terrified of all the details. I need to get him prepped so we can have a flounce-off!!

    1. There is a fair bit of detail on that one for sure, I think Ed Gladdis had to paint his twice iirc.
You'll do him more than justice I'm sure, it's got to happen !

  15. This gang is up there with the all time greats. You have a real knack for making complicated sculpts non complicated

    1. There's a lot going on with this one, I had to carefully block all colours in to get an idea of where I was going to. Having the other ones painted also helped considerably.
      Thanks !
