Last week end, I had the chance to be invited to play a mordheim campaign with the very same folks as last year.
I was very eager to see them again and play a new campaign with my freshly painted undead band.
With 4 tables, we would only be playing on less than half of the city but this was already quite an impressive sight and play ground you'll agree. ^^
Scenario one - The catacombs of Bogenhaced
In this game, the dark elves had to hold a building in the centre of this part of town, the vampires were willing to get hold of it but they'd have to procede with caution. Added to that, the catacombs were rumoured to hide dark secrets no self respecting vampire would ignore...
So the band decided to split with the necromancer investigating the cemetery and the vampire and his retinue going to take their objective.
The cemetery was providing a few corpses which would prove useful later so the necromancer started summoning a couple before going any further.
Meanwhile, Arthaud the vampire was moving under cover towards the objective, with some of his minions outflanking the enemy.
Bean and scones were guarding the cemetery gates.
Closing in enough to charge, the undead combined heir charges to take the dark elves down rapidly and hit them hard and clean.
Théophane, the female necromancer entered the crypt with her side kicks but as soon as she entered, an strange creature was summoned before them ! The opponent proved to be stronger than the necromancer and her servants...
In the distance, a strong scream resonated while an horrifying creature emerged from the water...
Arthaud gained the upper hand over his opponents and made them flee after taking more than a third of them...
The escape from the crypt
With their first objective secured, the undead had to quickly move on to their new goal to outrun their other opponents, the news of great reaches in this city has spread all over town and now different groups were racing for the final prize.
Unfortunately, the relentless march of the vampire and his crew meant they had to pass a team of dwarf adventurers who had absolutely no intention to let them move any further...
Sending a couple of wolves to test the weak spot in the dwarf line, Arthaud realised this would be a test for his group...
In a desperate attempt, he tried to blitz in a single point...
... just as a diversion to move the other way in the end...
The defense of the dwarf was far harder than anticipated with a rain of crossbow bolts falling on them...
Arthaud made the hard decision to postpone his crossing and change his itinerary.
Killing on the dock of the bay
With the bitter taste left by their previous encounter left in their dead mouths, the undead headed straight to the port where strange had occurred earlier and where they might gather informations.
Like before, Arthaud lead part of the band to the port inn to gather some informations (the likes of which had probably eluded previous bands) while another half of the band was moving on to the port.
With the inn in sight, Arthaud could barely resist the sweet scent of human flesh and fresh blood in the air.
Arthaud realised a norse tribe had already got in before him, he quickly built a cunning plan and decided to ally forces with them to gain informations, a shield in case of danger and... potential new recruits once they'd be dead...
The wonders of life in Bogenhaced make the presence of a vampire totally unnoticed...
With the information they gathered, the undead followed by their norse allies went straight to the entrance to the next adventure...
The dragon's lair
Gaming note : this tale was a multiplayer one with fog of war for each contestant.
Arthaud and his companion followed by their allies of the day entered a dark cave where they encountered fleeing elves. Just what were they fleeing ?
Both allies side by side, they made quite a weird line in the entrance corridor...
Meanwhile, the possessed were getting rid of the last dark elves still present in the cave.
And the dwarves were determined to get their share (and the other's as well) of the pie...
Unfortunately, there was someone else in that cave, someone not exactly willing to share it or its content with any other...
Sometimes, knowing your own limitations can be your greatest strength, with this in mind, the undead avoided combat and went straight for the treasure !
Some others being a bit more challenged to fight their own nature.
With the beast already wounded by the countless waves of warriors thrown at it, the vampire saw an opportunity to bathe himself in the most precious of bloods : a dragon's !
Unfortunately only one of the dire wolves managed to strike him a sufficient blow and the vampire got knocked out after withstanding multiple fire breaths.
The coalition of dwarves and undead did manage to take the beast down (mainly due to the efforts of the elves before them and to the deadly (read lucky) crossbow shots...
All could dive into the gold piles !
So here we are, a week end well spent and a fantastic opportunity to have a few games very nicely GMed by our wonderful host who not only provided the best tables I've fought on but also a very cool backstory and roleplaying opportunities to push Mordheim up to 11.
Nice models on a fantastic table with fun players and a superbly GMed campaign, I can tell you this is all I can aspire to in terms of hobby.
I'm already looking forward to the next campaign and I'm already thinking about my next band, could you guess which one I'll pick ?
Thats the stuff of legends. Great looking figures, great scenery and great scenarios. What more could you ask?
ReplyDeleteHonestly, that's all I ask for in hobby terms, I'm eager to have it with you guys next !
DeleteLooks like top weekend of gaming. Tables all look the business!
ReplyDeleteThe week end was full of blokish non sense and excellent gaming !

DeleteMordheim I love that game. Thank you for a great report which has made my day.
ReplyDeleteIt's a fun game really, full of thrills during the game and the post game sequence. Love it.
DeleteExtraordinary stuff. What a spectacle.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I find easy to paint a band and it's very rewarding to do so but the work on the scenery is absolutely mind blowing, it's full of details and things you only notice when you're close. the NPCs were also so very nice, the dedication of our GM really did show and pay, all of us had a wonderful time.
DeleteFantastic looking game mate - lucky you!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, very lucky to get to play on such boards with such a dedidcated GM. Top class bloke.
DeleteLooks like a lot of fun! Love the photo of the vampire at the bar: very funny!
ReplyDeleteIt made me laugh as well, it sounded like a bad joke : "A norse chief, a vampire and a dwarf come into a bar..."
DeleteBoth the minis and the terrain look fantastic ... eye candy galore!
ReplyDeleteThe game being fun as well, the holy trinity was complete with great models, terrain and game !
DeleteAstounding models, table and story. Now I need to add 'restart Mordheim' to my too long list of projects...:)
ReplyDeleteAfter a year long hyatus, I was kind of worried to get back to Mordheim completely rusted with a band I didn't know but it all came back and was so fun !
DeleteAwesome piece of scenery and wonderful reunion of great miniatures. A very nice way to spend the week-end :)
ReplyDeleteAll of those were great and the moments in between were filled with laughters as well, greatest kind of hobby week end really !
DeleteThat is a fantastic board! Great report too!
ReplyDeleteCheers, the lot of us had a wonderful time really !
DeleteMan, even if your warband died in the first three seconds of playing, you'd still be wrapped to have had a chance to play on that tabletop. It's so lovely I feel a stirring in my loins...even over the internets :)
ReplyDeleteYou lucky duck, looks great mate :)
Couldn't agree more !
DeleteYou have to bear in mind teh post game sequence is pretty wild and the winner can end up suffering more from a few causalties than th eloser does with many losses... It's a fun and stressfull phase of the game !
Oh, man!! I cannot clap strongly enough! Ubercool!!
ReplyDeleteTry harder ! It was really cool I can swear !
DeleteMate, that looks and sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteLooked like all minis were painted to excellent standards and on such breathtaking tables too!
I can only hope my Shadow War: Armageddon games are as cool looking. :)
Everyone played their part and on top of that, we had a lot of laughs in between games which can't harm the WE I guess.
DeleteThat scenery and those miniatures just look AMAZING. I find those water effects just magically beautiful. But that's just the beginning... so many incredible details in the buildings and dungeons. I am in awe.
ReplyDeleteCedric really did an amazing job, it's easy to take scenery for granted but what he's done here is just outstanding and I don't mean this lightly.
Deletethe photos and battle report were awesome, thank you for sharing! But never in my life has it occurred to me to link a Panters song to play while reading a BatRep!!
ReplyDeleteThere's a first for everything ! Glad you liked it, we really had a fantastic time and I hope it shows in the pics !
DeleteThat looks like a lot of fun. Such great gaming board/scenary!!!! Captured it well in the photos /Hans
ReplyDeleteI really love how the stories unfolded themselves as we played, nice players and an excellent GM were the cherry on an already good looking cake.
DeleteThis is absolutely top notch! Exquisite minis and tables, great story lines, and 100% commitment to the gameplay with that fog of war. So jealous!
ReplyDeleteBest reward when you've spent time on models is to put them on such a table and get to play with them really. ^^
DeleteAwesome setting! Those are some really old Tabletop World models. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm no expert but there are from many eras, it's top notch stuff though, no question, absolute delight to play in !
