After quite and exhausting but pleasant week end hitting people with a stick and screaming at them wearing a blue skirt and an armour, I finally took the 10 minutes required to finish what had remained a WIP for too long...
This is what you expect when hearing "noise marine" |
Now I'm not going to do a History class here but Citadel have long been associated with the Heavy metal culture in many ways : the name of the painting studio, the musical tastes of some people in the studio, the studio actually producing a couple of groups amongst which the most excellent Bolt Thrower, some studio members being actual metal musicians (Mark Gibbons) and so on.
The noise marines are the outcome of all that and specifically of one of D-Rock's songs :
Now Bolt Thrower and D-Rock don't have much in common apart from the long hair their members sport really. The noise marine figure designed by Jes Goodwin clearly draws its inspiration from the heavy/glam/dragon/hair metal side of the metal genre.
That's all nice and fine but I'm not satisfied with that.
When I hear NOISE marine, I'm not hearing BAD TASTE marines if you see what I mean. That means I wanted to bring back the NOISE in Noise marine. I do fancy most sides of the Metal genre but a few but I really wanted to make this marine a true metal head in power armour.
That meant having most of him black, just because it all gets down to how much black you can get. I was that close to giving him a black mane as well but thought a fiery red would be better visually while not breaking the visual code too much.
Porting musical influences into my painting is always fun and this will most likely lead to a very cool group project with the WIPsters.
I'll be painting a new Noise marine for the occasion (yes another one) and we will have some classy head banging fun !
Meanwhile, plenty on the desk and a few things coming out, some long projects progressing...
Hell yeah!
ReplyDeleteperfect work!
Cheers, the next noise marine should be pretty different !
DeleteGood choice with the black JB. Heavy Metal & black go together like beer & chocolate....try it, it's a good'n!
ReplyDeleteSame black technique over zenith basecoat again?
I'm a lazy mofo really, same old trick again... ^^
DeleteI'll try choc and beer for sure, can't go wrong with any of those !
This is by far the best Noise Marine I've ever seen, next to the old one from White Dwarf. The two are every bit as good. All I can think of is the he looks...LIKE A RAINBOW IN THE DARK!
ReplyDeleteThe 2 have a few points in common like black rims, face and red eyes after all !
DeleteThanks dude.
Very cool mate, such a good look for this mini! Best example that I have seen by a mile.
ReplyDeleteCheers, there's isn't much tbh but black and red and a couple of transfers ! ^^
Merci !
Oooooh! This makes much more sense that I had thought. Cool reinterpretation of this one. I never found inner peace when painting this model; I have it in Emperor's Children purple, but never got to like my work on it. The black approach looks quite natural. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThe next one will be a bit more colourful although nothing as colourful as the original... ^^
DeleteThanks Suber !
Awesome! If this guy had been on that dreadnought truck, Rockatansky would not have gotten out alive.
ReplyDeleteAh ! The film would have ended pretty rapidly indeed !
DeleteBeautiful work mate. I love those little orangey hues you've added to the black.
ReplyDeleteI've found adding bits of desaturated colours here and there on big plain surfaces does help making them look less dull.
DeleteCheers Ed !
ReplyDeleteNice painting JB, that guy will slot in with the rest of your Black Legion nicely.
It's not a "Black Legion®", but it is indeed a black legion so to speak. Thanks !
DeletePerfect! Dark yet still flamboyant!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm eager to see how the next ones are going to be !
DeleteNice work on the Noise Marine! Painted one myself back in the 90s in the strongest possible colors of course :)
ReplyDelete/Hans
Didn't we all ? I'm just frustrated I didn't take a pic before stripping him !
DeleteGreat work, although I do have a soft spot for the outrageous colour scheme.
ReplyDeleteCheers, I do love most forms of metal so the extravagant dragon/hair kind is one I like as well but that's not exactly what I like to paint, hence the compromise. ^^
DeleteMine back in the 90s was nurgle green cos I was jealous and felt nurgle marines would rock out too.
ReplyDeleteBlack looks way better tho.
Doing alternate gods is actually a very interesting idea, I just don't need to buy another 4 though !
DeleteThanks !
I can feel the base, deep, deep in my lizard brain. ROCK ON
ReplyDelete*shakes fist and hand*
DeleteI love the way you have painted the black armour here. I find it a challenging colour to get right, especially regarding the highlights. You have really brought that armour to clanking life and I admire the little spots of rust here and there too. Very effective. He looks superb! Almost as him he's been on tour with Motorhead and lived to tell the tale!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Black has been a colour I've struggled with for a while but I've found ways around it now.
DeleteSurviving a tour with Mötörhead is no mean feat I reckon, but he's definitely cut from that kind of wood.
Thanks for the kind words, this litle guy will be at Newark this summer for sure. ;)
Now that's a noise marine worthy of the rock and roll hall of fame! :) Super work! And that group shot is super cool! (Does anyone say super cool anymore ... heck I do)
ReplyDeleteSuper cool is super fine !
