Zombie eaters...

Never was much into zombies to begin with but I've actually painted quite a few since last year. And I have to admit loving the process. They're very rewarding and quite forgiving and often have plenty of silly details that make most of their charm (how else could we love dead but walking rotting meat ?).

These are of course part of the zombies Kev Adams has sculpted a few years back now and ad always they have a lot of charm, mostly because the multitude of them means you can have plenty without having any doubles or even variants.

To be honest the painting was pretty straightforward, after a white zenithal coat over a black undercoat, I just placed my base colours and used all the washes I thought would work to pick some highlights and bring back a bit of contrast.
Add a good load of gore and fancy stuff on the base et voilà !

You might notice they vary greatly in size and bulk but humans do so I suppose their corpses shouldn't be any different !

That brings the total of painted models to 9 for this warband, meaning I still have some room to make a list for Mordheim and Frostgrave (the games they're intended for.

I still have plenty of archetypical undead creatures to paint and add so expect plenty more for this band ! There's a good vibe going on these days so I'll try and surf that wave to benefit from it as much as I can !

I like the Tudor (or should that be Valois?) looking Undead warband.

    2. i'm so disappointed. I thought you were awesome, but you're not, you're a scam! Now i'm sure you don't even paint your minis yourself! Who's locked up in your cave painting for food all those wonders ? Tell us who!!

  8. For Frostgrave you're going to need at least a couple team members that can represent an archer or crossbow-man/woman/thing. Ranged weapons are very good in that game.

This group is really developing into a thing of beauty - rotten faces and all.

I like painting zombies too, they are relatively simple and encourage simple painting methods so working on multiple at a time is not such a daunting task.

    1. I do have a couple of guys with "count as" crossbows, it's true some shooters are useful.

      Thanks a lot.

  10. They look just fantastic! I love those old school zombies.
Quick question, M. Asslessman -- why the hexagonal bases?

    1. The hexagonal bases were at first a way to do things differently because :
      1) I don't like the look of square bases
      2) Square bases tend to make me want to do ranks and when I do ranks I want complete ones which leads me to paint bigger units that I would like to.
      3) Hex bases still let you rank if you want to
      4) It's a bit of a HIPster thing
      5) They look oldschool
Now, I'm really fond of them and although there's the issue of finding some for bigger creatures.

Thanks for the kind words ;)

  11. The naked guy and the gent having his brain eaten by a crow are my favourite zombies from that range.

I painted them both rapidly in the 90s and I still have them. They have been in very many games featuring zombie hordes in various settings since, so I wont ever repaint them. I would like to paint those two to higher standard some time though, as you have.

    Good work :)

    1. The sense of silly in animated corpse is just what makes those model so great. Getting the balance between both sides right is tricky and Admas got it spot on.
