Frostgrave Wizard from Asgard !

2016 is 3 days old now so it's about time I got something painted ! Since yesterday was sunday, I felt it would be cool to make like I did for my champions of law and paint a single model, start to finish, for my frostgrave warband.
Like I said in a previous post, I'm going to use Frostgrave as an excuse to get those wonderful Jes Goodwin barbarians done. Even though it is designed with Forstgrave in mind, I'm pretty confident the group will be just as cool with WHFB or even Mordheim so that's double win from where I stand.

Since everything in Frostgrave is based on the wizard I obviously has to begin with him to set the proper mood for my group.

You may have seen I didn't pick an old bearded geezer to be my wizard. This is a deliberate choice because we see plenty of those Merlin/Gandalf wannabes. Instead, I wanted a more pagan, almost shamanic look to my wizard. For that reason, I picked one of the warriors with  a huge halberd and swapped the blade for the top part of Ahriman's staff (another Jes Goodwin sculpt so I'm not betraying him much).
The sculpt is good (Goodwin at work) but the casting is not perfect and I suspect some old moulds have been involved in the process.

I honestly have no idea what school to make him part of in terms if rules so if you folks have any recomandations, I'll gladly consider them. I'll give myself some time to consider once the apprentice is painted. I'll rely on the look of the model more than anything else to make a choice anyway. I'm leaning towards Witch and Thaumaturge for the time being...

"Roldor had always been a loner in the village, his above normal physical constitution making him stand from the rest of the children. He never suffered from the seclusion though and  took every opportunity he had to look at the wonders of nature and the studies of those before him. A life divided between studying and enjoying the wild life soon made Roldor realise his future wouldn't be what it could be if he stayed in his village. He left it without any remorse nor regret though he sensed his nephew Skai would have followed him if he'd asked. The boy had to mature a bit but his sould was pure and bright and he would enlighten the village in a few years."

Painting wise, I've aimed at a very rapid job like for the champions of Law so I took shortcuts and quick methods to save time. I wanted to reflect the pagan theme I had in mind and for some reason wanted to have some blue in the general scheme (well, I sort of want to have blue on every model I paint anyway. The sculpts definitely looked gallic to me so I wanted to nod in this direction. Let's say I tried to find a middle ground between those :

I'll let you decide if it works or not, or maybe will it be a bit clearer once I've done a couple more models.
Anyway, it feels good to be back behind a brush even if I've had to time to enjoy teh company of my children and great friends during this winter ceasefire. As always, I'm working on more projects at once than I should but I'm enjoying it so hey...

  1. I love the trousers on this one. Funnily enough, when I saw them I thought of Obelix and scrolling down I saw your mention of him. Have you considered using blue for woad patterns on the arms or legs?

    1. That was a nod I couldn't shy away from I must admit. ^^'
I have considered woad patterns yes and will probably add them at some point but since I'm building this group one piece at a time I'll wait till I have a couple more models done to see how it affects, in all honesty, I believe he'll get them eventually.
      Thanks !

  2. Looking good JB - off to a good start mate, love the pants, and you've got the shamanistic vibe nailed... there's a hint of native American to the sculpt as well I feel. I'm intrigued by Frostgrave myself, but still trying to figure out my approach... I want mine to work for RT as well so quite a bit to think about...

    1. Cheers ! the sculpt has indeed many influences like all the range and it's funny to imagine pushing them in a direction more than another. I'll try to keep a minimal coherence though. Hivegrave is of course not far from my thoughts ;)

  3. it definitely works. Those striped pants are always looking great on savage creatures like barbarian and ogres. I just love it. Great painting on the arm-hairs, works well

    1. Cheers mec ! the arms are just drybrushed with mid grey ^^. I'm eager to see how this band shapes up, 10 models is not an overwhelming task. ;)

  4. An old model for a new game. He's got a unique look, all crouched around his staff, which seems perfect for the socially inadequate character.

The striped trousers are a great touch. Very nice!

    1. Considering the bulk of him, it is a bit weird to see him like this indeed but it does add a bit of character !
      Cheers.

  6. Hmm, most interesting! I hadn't thought of that approach! Looking forward to seeing more!

  7. He looks lazy or sleepy to me, so definitely a chronomancer!

Some woad yes would add to him and any other future warband member.

O and I got Obelix too. Been a couple decades I think since I read an Asterix comic.

    1. Problem is that one of the barbarians has the same face as Asterix so I will have to ask myslef the question of painting him with blonde hair or not... in the meantime I'll see how many members have bare arms for me to apply tattoos and will start looking for patterns ;)
      Cheers !

  8. Phew... I leave a bunch of days and posts fall from the sky ! Frostgrave is a great game, hope you'll enjoy it. So is Mordheim, your Champions of Law will perfectly fit the ruined city ! :)

    1. Cheers ! I have no great ambition for this new warband, but the models will be painted and I'll have a team to play a new game with friends so that's double-win for me !
      Bonne année ;)

    2. Bonne année aussi ;)
Despite having a same skirmish and campaign-based approach, Frostgrave et Mordheim do feel very different when you play. Both have very good points. I do personnally enjoy these kind of games very much.
If it also manages to get you paint some more models, it's even better !

    3. That's the main appela of these games for me, a small group that can be painted in no time (or little) and easy rules which leave room for fun.

    4. I could completely borrow these words :)

  9. Oh. He is fantastic. Face looks like Ogami Ittō to me, and the way he is hugging the staff reminds me of the way Gollum covets the Ring of Power. I'd have him possessed by the eldritch pole. No idea how that would translate to Frostgrave mechanics!

    1. There's a lot of japanese in him indeed and I have to say painting his face reminded me a lot opf Hiroshi Hirata's work. I'm not very familiar with the rules so far but if it doesn't reflect in terms of mechanics, I can always indice that aspect in the way I play him.
I've been thinking about you recently and hope to be able to show the fruit of it in a very near future ;)

  11. I'm digging on this guy JB, he sure loves that staff! Lovely work on the jewels on the staff, and, it goes without saying, awesome trousers.
