Fabius Bile the primogenitor

New year's resolutions... the fools amongst us keep making them believing they'll respect them while the most strong willed adhere to them to the letter. Well I'm a sort of strong willed fool so I kind of always stay in this middle ground. Why all this rant ? Well I've decided to get as many half finished projects out of my table as I could so after finishing the last 2 models on new year's day, I turned to the next most finished model I could see. Turns out it was a model begun almost exactly a year ago... Oh the shame...
Well Fabius Bile was lucky enough to be alone and half finished on top of his old paint pot so I grabbed him !

Getting back to him, I realised why I had stalled in the first place. the patchwork robe is quite a tiring part of the model so I tried to use all the energy gathered previously and finished it. I tried to keep a leathery feel to all colours hence avoiding neat flat surfaces.
I've also realised it's quite hard to get away from how the studio model look if you keep a dark armour. The only difference I added was the different colours to reflect the fact Bile is an equal opportunity murderer. He'll cut you apart no matter your race, gender or anything...

Since I wanted him to tie in with the other renegades I have I left the armour mainly black so in order to make it a bit less dull, I made some parts glow with an inner fire and weathered it a bit with rust marks here and there. I think it breaks the monotony of a huge black mass without changing it too much.
All in all it was rather lazy job and I could have done things differently, the robe could have used some stains and all and the 2 tanks above his head could have used other colours. He's done though and that leaves time for new things.

But why did I paint him ? Well I have plans. Aaaand I needed a big boss, iconic enough, to be above all those plans. I realised the model would be quite fitting for the cause so I picked him. They're a year old plans but I've made progress on them though so I hope this will be a 2017 thing (and by thing I mean games).
Here  are soe of Bile's friends for games to come...
Some of the half finished models on my desk are making feel a real tremendous shame but I guess I just need to man up and get working !

  2. Bile is the perfect chap to lead your trio - they look great together in spite of the different game / range sources.

Painting on Bile is great. I like the dark inner fire to the backpack in particular. If you feel the need to add some stains to his coat, you can always revisit I guess :)

    1. Cheers, I know I could revisit him but I rarely (meaning never) get back to a model...
I might try to group all the models I've painted for my project in a scenic way now... ^^'

  5. Fabulous Bill! The one and only Fabulous Bill. Not tempted to bump the top-heavy mini up to a 32mm base?

    1. He'd be totally better on a 30-32 mm base for sure, now the way I work means I'll have to see him fall with the paint chipping to deeply sigh and do it... :/
He'll be Fabulous doing it though. ^^

  6. This mini equally attracts and repels me, hehe, and I think that's a good thing (as in fact that only means that in the end I love it). Charmful character whatsoever, worth of leading a warband; you made him justice, I love your vision on this one.

    1. The love/hate relation with a model is an intersting one, I had the same with the blood slaughterer !
He'll have minions to lead for sure !
      thanks.

  7. That's one of my favorite all time models. One tip that I can offer from having done quite a few patchwork flesh shield on my dark elves is apply random thinned washes (thicker than a glaze but thinner than a wash) to random pieces. I found blues, browns, and reds to best.

    1. Seems like a good idea indeed. If I had to start afresh I'd do a few things differently, even in the year it took me to finish it, I've evolved on some points and wouldn't do parts the same way. ^^

  8. Awesome job mate - he does look like a slog to paint, but your efforts were well worth it. The face is stunning!

  11. It's strange how I never liked this mini. I still find your color palette to be much better than the flashy GW style.

    1. I wish I hadn't started the way I did a year ago, Going full grimdark on this guy might result in something great really.

  12. Like the good Docteur above, I was never much of a fan of this mini, but your paint job does do a fine job of polishing a poop!

    1. After painting it once I realise I made th emistake to paint it like any other model and I believe it's not what fits such a model. The sculpt goes up to 11 and so should the paintjob. I'd be tempted to grab a cheap double and paint it full grimdark.
