After the 2 previous champions of Law I painted, I thought I could paint 2 in a row this time... well without a surprise it took me a little longer which means I couldn't get them all done on Sunday as usual...
In the last post about this warband, Two esteemed painting buddies, namely Jon/Axiom and Nico both suggested the same miniature to join this warband. Honestly, who am I to oppose such talented guys and clearly men of taste who pick one of the nice Jes Goodwin chaos warriors ? Good thing is I had the model so it was just a matter of getting it on a hex base really.
While looking for the chaos champion, I fell upon one very funny looking dwarf from the BC3 Dwarf lords of Legend (given to me as a gift in a trade along the Space White dwarf) :

Obviously this named character needed a little twitching to fit in my warband. Where the chaos warrior was painted excatly like the other models so far, the dwarf required a little attention. I gave him a white beard to link it with the rest of the crew and to keep my restricted palette. The glowing blue eyes worked well with this model sinc it already bears one gigantic eye which makes him look like the maniac he is.
The barrel on his back seems to indicate he's quite a drinker like any dwarf but I like to think my dwarf here is sober and that his sobriety may very well be one of the causes of his extreme anger and violence (in addition of being a fanatic zealot, very bad mix if I may say). That's the reason why he does have a nasty scar on the belly (he likes to think he doesn't need any armour but faith and resolve) and has no red nose (sorry about that Captain...)
I thought a little shot of the 3 shields so far could be fun, not that they're particularly nice or anything but they bring the unity I wanted so that's all fine by me.
With 4 members now, the band is starting to look a little more impressive and I've managed to gather quite a load of new models which will bring some variety while staying in the same vein I hope.
I know Hex bases are not to everyone's taste and I have to say for quite some time I didn't really like the look of them but the more I see them now the more I think it was the best choice really. and if you still think they're meh, well just look at one of the good things you can do with them :
Right now my hobby program seems a bit like a tunnel as I've accepted some commissions and even managed to get involved in some more group projects that are just writing my hobby program for me...
Hopefully I'll manage to get a couple of "candy" models in between as usual ;)
Oh and as you can see I've had to add a new colour to the palette... I'm weak.
Oh I'm jealous JB - these guys are turning out so clean and crisp! As ever, the model selection is impeccable.
ReplyDeleteI like the way your first and most recent warriors' hoods evoke each other. I suspect that the dwarf carries a barrel of brandy, purely for mental discipline in order to remain sober. Perhaps he sometimes pulls the cork and inhales fumes before resolutely not drinking a drop?!
I hope you agree with model selection since you've had an influence in it (and some more models in the future come from suggestions of yours btw) !
DeleteI'm glad you noticed I reversed the hoods and clothe colours for the 2 warriors, it's just a detail but I think it gives a bit more character while keeping the exact same palette.
I forgot to mention but the barrel is actually full of oil to burn heretics and whatever needs to be burnt (and believe me theres plenty to burn when you're a fanatic maniac).
Cheers ;)
JB these are so awesome. I am really enjoying the model selection, keep up the good advice Axiom. ;)
ReplyDeleteWell I hope you'll love the new ones, I've got all a bunch ready for painting ;)
DeleteOnce again they look great. Oh, what a work! They look unified and they tell a story. Now you have to add... I don't know... an albino Orc! :D
ReplyDeleteNo orc on the list but some elevated hounds, beastmen, elves and all ! I'll have to find a suitable wizard at some point too !
DeleteThanks a lot ;)
They're really beginning to take shape JB. Looking great! I'm beginning to wonder whether I've ever seen that latest warrior before. They cohere brilliantly.
DeleteCheers, I don't think he was catalogued, haven't seen him anywhere... That said I'm not the most knowledgeable out there. He is a variant of the one with axe and was repurposed as a beastman with bull head.
Deletei hope I won't break the cohérence ;)
Lovely work. I really like the colour palette for these guys. And the dwarf fits in perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I was wondering of the palette would still work with more models but it seems it does do the job still so I'm quite happy with it. The dwarf was quia a daring move as he's tha exact opposite of the other models with relatively no clothe or armour but in the end being from the exact same ear and all, he does fit with the other quite nicely.
DeleteJB, this Law warband concept is absolutely stunning and these guys are wonderful additions to it.
ReplyDeleteCheers James, I have to say this little project is a blessing for my motivation, I have no big plan, just adding models I fancy every now and then and this is very refreshing modelling wise. It really motivates me for all the other projects. Glad you like it as well ;)
DeleteVery delicate use of colour there JB. Really lovely stuff. And nothing says old school citadel like plastic hex slotta bases.
ReplyDeleteThanks ! Those bases do add a bit of vintage cred I reckon, I think of all my models these may very well be the ones that have the most oldschool look despite the fact it was never intentional they did...
DeleteAnyway, as long as I'm enjoying painting hem and people enjoy seeing them, there's no reason to stop anywhere soon. ^^
The similar colors do a lot to blend the models together. While very different, the dwarf fits perfectly alongside his mates. And the model is awesome, your painting sheds a whole different light on him, which is awesome !
ReplyDeleteCheers mec !
DeleteI had never truly looked at it before painting it and it really is a nice model ! I think they all blend together because they're all from the same era and based on the same aesthetic really which is exactly the aesthetic I'm aiming at.
Don't diminish the impact of your painting : if their overall retro feel is obvious, this is your painting that gets them to form a real group ;)
DeleteI love this project. What about taking inspiration from Magic's white faction? I know it has some lion man types.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I know very little about Magic so I'll have to dig that source, for the time being, the problem is to find suitable lion heads to make conversions unfortunately. I have other leads though if lion heads prove to be a problem...
DeleteThanks !
In Magic White is all about law, justice, order and peace. Here are some examples of their cat people cards:

Not that you have to do this of course, just an idea. But if you're looking for minis and are open to non-Citadel companies here are a couple lion/tiger men.

Wow, than you so much !
DeleteI'm clearly not very knowledgeable outside old citadel and I didn't know any of these ^^' I will check how hose scale but there must some good opportunities, thanks again for taking the time, truely appreciated.
