Rogue trader Lord of change

Alright so a few days ago, one of my fellow hobbyists Mus submitted amongst plenty other things that we do a little group challenge and each paint a greater demon.
That's of course a brilliant idea in itself but it inrigued me even more because of this :

I had three out of four greater demons converted for Rogue Trader but I was missing a fourth !
Who has ever written a song called the 3 horsemen ? NOONE that's right.
Time to ride the winds of change !
I had converted my lord of changes a few years ago and had even primed it during lock down but as things usually go, I never went further than this :

As you can see it's quite a fiddly model hanging from the tip of the foot with long thin arms and delicate biomechanical tentacle/wings, it came broken at an ankle and to make things worse I dropped it before painting, weakening the pinning (which held though) and breaking the tip of a tentacle...

Funnily enough, the Lords of change and Tzeentch in general seem to be quite misrepresented because suspect the colours often associated with them didn't age well and are somehow tricky to do gracefully, I know some of the guys are going to paint some and that's really cool but I know I wanted mine to be darker, more subdued and fitting with my renegades generally so I kept their signature black as a base and added colours but with light desaturated glazes over grey, that makes him/her/it considerably less flamboyant but also (I hope) significantly more creepy and frightening.

Now I'm not gonn lie, it is a huge satisfaction and a definite bucket list achievement for me to have a full pantheon painted (Only ever got to 3/4 with the fantasy versions in my youth)

Now I have some good stuff coming despite the summer vacations and all, just a slow pace !

  1. The more I look at this figure, the more seamless it appears. The hand is a perfect size and gesture. The head is absolutely the right scale and look. The bio-mechanical tentacles give the same winged silhouette that I associate with a Lord of Change. Yet each of those tweaks is vitally important in shifting the setting from fantasy to RT. The painting is of course, beautiful, moody and full of fun little details like the chest eyes. But it's the conversion that I think does the most to really sell the figure. Nice work!

    1. This one was definitely the trickiest of all (no pun intended) to find the right balance, using too many modern parts or the wrong mechanical parts for what is mostly a bird with jewels was not easy. The titan head is just the rght size and does a lot and I knew I didn't want little flapping wings but more like energy tentacles floating around him (too much videogames influence here).
I had a clear idea for the other 3 but this one took a little more time up to the painting stage which took years to figure.
In Hindsight now I wish I had used a titan head on the blood Thirster as well but that's a complete set so that's as good as it gets !
      Thanks !

    1. Oh they surely all draw a lot from that sort of thing, glad you approve !

  3. That's a great conversion. I love the bio-mechanical approach and the cybernetic tendrils instead of the usual feathered wings look good and disturbing at the same time.

I like the muted colour scheme too. Taking that approach really makes it look different and more near future sci-fi. The dynamic pose of the body gives it a greater sense of momentum than the usual static waving Lords of Change.
Glad you have all four powers covered. Now all you need is a Daemonic Legion for each of them to lead. :)

    1. I'm working on the legion, I'll get there eventually !
I had to pin the foot and bend the model forward to avoid the cheerleader pose and make it somehow more menacing, still plenty to do on this cyclopean project but it is fun !

    2. It's a good repositioning, gives it a great sense of movement. I'll look forward to seeing how your Demon Legions progress.

  4. Oh yes, that works really well. Love the conversion but the subtleties in the colouration work beautifully for me. Nice!

    1. Cheers mec, I was actually inspired by your verdacio barbarians and worked a bit this way (only with red, browns and blues instead) to have a richer skin with all the glazes.

  5. Love him JB. All your little touches to make the overall feel more RT than Fantasy really do fit in amazingly well. And as to that colourscheme - Tzeentch is a master of "change", why would all his Vulture Demons be parrot-coloured? Some would be like yours or even full metallic or monotone, etc I think.

    1. I can't agree with you more than I do on the changing appearance, I loved the blob of faces horrors from the 2000's for that reason, Tzeentch should be diturbing and unsettling in my book.
      Thanks a lot !
