Epic imperial knights - Wardens

OK so it only seems right the new year begins how the previous one ended right ? After painting the paladins and lancers, I only had the wardens left to do !

For some reason, the fact they're heavy armoured and armed meant I wanted something darker so I opted for my off black as a base colour and added the others namely white, yellow and red to tie them with the rest of the force.

I'll be honest with you, these were way less fun than the lighter ones to paint, mainly because the models were either miscasts or damaged in the first place so that meant some repairs and dealing with  weird texture all the time. in the end, I think they look OK, maybe a bit under the others...

This complete the set now :

Now I've realised there's a pattern across the whole range, all options come in 3 sculpts and amongst these sculpts you get one original sculpt (three guy in the middle below), a variant (guys on the right) and one odd sculpt that looks nothing like the other two...
Now that's definitely something I'd like to chat about with the designers. ^^

It feels great to have these done, next stop is for something completely different but normal service should resume shortly !
Happy new year all !

  1. I love the contrast of the dark grey carapace with the yellow, white and red. The beetle-looking ones are gloriously squat and stompy aren't they?

Great way to finish off the set!

    1. They're quite fun and really deliver the idea of full frontal armour and oversized cannons !

  2. Oh, cool! I'd only ever seen the Warden 2 sculpt before. Didn't even know there were others. The one with the missile pod on top is my fave.

I wonder if the odd one out in each group were originally just concept sculpts for a possible alternate direction, and then they decided to release them for extra variety as well or something.

    1. they clearly aren't the ones you see everyday despite being Goodwin models and the sources for many of the later stuff but I like them !

  3. It's great to see the entire household painted.

I like the way that you have faded the palette colours through the units too, nicely done.

The Imperial Knights were some of the first GW figs that I ever bungled my way through, and I am really fond of the concept and designs. It's a pleasure to see them get treatment like this.

    1. They're more of a rediscovery thing for me, I only had vague memories but I love them deeply now !

  4. Really cool. I had never guessed about the miscast issues if you hadn't told, so that speaks a lot about the additional work you put in here. Cool!

    2. That's bizarre, though: 2 of the sculpts are named "Warden 1"!

  7. Great work JB. It's interesting the things you notice when you put them all up together.

  8. These are great! Those old Knights (especially the Wardens) had a lot of...character... and there just aren't many who can make them look good. I love it!

    1. I totally get they're an aquired taste but I just love how weird they are and how little sense they seem to make, it gives them so much character.

  9. Oh, how I love these. I had 3 of the right-hand ones, but my paint job was terrible, even worse compared to yours. It would be so great to do all the Epic-style knights in 40K scale, but especially the Wardens; they look like big stompy cockroaches! Although now that I look at it, the tracked Warden is more than a little reminiscent of the new Lord of Skulls...

    1. The new ord of skull definitely borrows from this guy indeed and would make a great base for it ^^
      Thanks !

    2. What I want to know is how the Warden's supposed to steer with just one huge track!
