The Six Sinners - Grimdark Slaanesh cult

What a pleasure ! What a pleasure it is to get a project done. A couple of months ago, I was playing with a bunch of old Slaanesh champions from Jes Goodwin and I ended up with a bunch of converted cultists which would very well fit with the first guy I had done in December.

Now with the summer over and the cold hard reality of everyday life back, I had to get some hobby Hygge and what better way than to finish this group ?

Now let's take a look at them all, starting with Astomoth, leader of the Six Sinners, a depraved creature who likes nothing like making combats last to taste the fear to then finish it in the blink of an eye to enjoy the horrors to commit when it's over.

Tresum is probably the most revolting member of the six sinners. Not even his companions know if he was a genestealer hybrid in the first place or if his unspeakable actions with all the reatures he could find lead Slaanesh to crossbreed him into one...

Bushita is the oldest member of the group and a former member of an infamous fallen legion. His encounter with Fabius Bile has left him a soul even more scarred than his twisted body.

S'creempye would almost look as the least impressive member of the group, the least extravagant. That would be until you realise the eyes on his right shoulder are always looking at you, you would then realise his silence is more frightening than any shout or scream and that his sadism has no limits.

Samakutra is the member that has searched his answers for more experiences in the raw powers of the  Immaterium. His quest for heretic tomes of power through torture and soul raping has made him go to places that would make dark eldars cringe. His quest has succeeded though and his ability to wound the very spirit of his victims is even greater than the already deadly waves of raw destructive energy he throws at his foes.

So here we are, I like Slaanesh because with 6 members I can call this group done although I know it would require a bit more to play Shadow wars or other games. But I just happen to have the perfect idea to give those guys some backup !!!
I have a few other plans before that but I can tell you the Six Sinners won't play alone for too long !

  1. The best Slaaneshi squad I've ever seen. If you ever want to part with these I would totally buy them from you. Great work.

    1. The blend of old and new is your area of expertise so thanks ! Painting Goodwin champions is like putting an old Megadeth/Maiden/Metallica CD on or reading Slaine/the metabarons for the 100th time, I just don't tire of it really !

  3. These are delicate, depraved and disturbing. Everything a Slanneshi cultist should be I guess. If you pressed me, I'd pick Bushita as the one I'd like to add to my collection. The subtle conversion work really works perfectly on him/her. Bravo!

    1. While paintingthem, I realised how they were just all variants of one another but yet all had a very strong character. I wouldn't be able to pick any really. ^^
      Thanks !

  5. Excellent group and awesome little backstories, this really contributes to give something special. The conversions are great and I love the orange on Tresum.

    1. Thanks mec, Tresum was the first I did when I got back to this group so I really liked the idea but ws worried the orange to tie him with my other 'stealers would clash, in the end, it seems to work.

  6. Superb! Really clever choice of colour pallete to evoke Slaanesh, but in a grimy underhive kind of a way rather than the classic brightly coloured pastels. The names are all brilliant too!

  8. You've really thrown the gauntlet down with these guys. It's a sure sign of a cracking set of figures that i'm instantly trying to conceive of some opponents for them. Other chaotics? Sensei? Who knows! Awesome stuff JB. Classics.

  9. These are brilliant. The dark vibe works perfectly to capture their depravity yet is still recognisably Slaanesh. Great work.

  10. A truly amazing set of monstrosities! Utterly blown away! <3

Although I have one speculative critique: I imagine that Tresum might look more cohesive if you painted his gribbly parts in the classic Genestealer deep purple.

    1. I've been thinking about this a lot, you can see Bushita got a blue leg instead but I wanted Tresum to tie in with my genestealer hybrids, I was worried it would clash too much so tried to tone it down a bit. If it wasn't for my other 'stealers, the classic look would have been perfect I agree.

  11. They all turned out great JB!

My only critique would be about the force halberd. It looks damn nice, you pulled off the OSL on the blade perfectly, but it looks a little too clean compared to the rest of the mini. It's a small personal critique on an otherwise awesome group :)

My favourite of the bunch remains S'creempye. I love his stance. Any reason why Astomoth is on a 30mm bases? Or have you already explained that in an earlier post?

I'm interested to see what you have planned to add to this gang now.

    Cheers No bum :)

    1. Once again I have to agree with you. When I came to painting that part, I thought it woudl be cool to paint it like a force weapon but I realised a bit late it stands out a tad too much. Since the effect wasn't bad and given that I'm a lazy dog, here we are.
Astomoth has a bigger base because way too much stuff was outside of the base and because I felt the leader could have a slightly bigger one.
      Cheers man !

    2. What if you dry brushed some white on him to show the glowing a bit more, I think it would tie him together a little more. They are all absolutely wonderful tho. Nice work M8. ;)

    3. Could do too but I wanted it to look different from the glowing energy weapons so thought makingit look like a different material was a good way. I tend to do energy weapons the same way to keep a sort of coherence throughout all my models.
      Thanks a lot Bud !

  12. JB, JB. You've set a new standard here, these are magnificent. Expertly converted from very sympathetic parts and wonderfully painted, great characters all. Slaanesh tends to get less love than the other Gods, ironically, but you've made the prince a warband of some considerable note here.

  14. I have to admit I was really dubious about the conversion work on S'creempy, I thought it was too subtle. But now it's painted it looks glorious. The muted pallete on the warband also lets Bushita's crab bits come to fore marvellously. This is an amazing warband.

    1. S'creempy was a favourite for many people when I showed them unpainted which surprised me as I thought Tresum had teh most potential. Painting them made them all kind of even in my heart ! ^^
      Thanks man !

  15. Love these - already one of my favourites when you showed the conversions, but they look so good now. I had the fella with the admech rifle as number one, but now here's paint on them I think the genestealer headed chap might win. Really ace!

Absolutely fantastic; the conversions and the colour coherence. Slaanesh can be proud. If you ever get crabs don't worry, it's just a Chaos gift.

    1. Well thank you amigo !
I'm really glad people seem to like them as Slaanesh usually isn't the favourite god and the way I painted them is a bit unusual. ^^

    2. I think that's because we tend to see Slaanesh in quite a determined way. Ankwardly, it has become a 'vanilla' set, i.e. 'it's Slaanesh so we need a sexy demon girl, haha BDSM, haha penis'. Slaanesh has indeed a lot of potential and much more to offer, and I think that's the way you explored here. I'd love to see more stuff in this fashion!

    3. I'm all for trying to do something different, not using green for Nurgle or making Slaanesh a bit more subtle, it can really work for them !

  18. Stupendous work. I keep finding glorious/frightening little details. hard to pick a favorite, and hard to suggest any improvement, although maybe the body on the chest plate of Samakutra or the unnaturally clean force blade. But then maybe it only seems clean because it burns off the filth, or because it is glowing with the unnatural power of the warp?

    1. I agree with you, the bodies on the armour are painted this way with Giger in mind to avoid the chained fairy look at all costs or anything of the sort. It's a strong choice? The force weapon does look odd although it is good on its own, I just wanted something different but I should have gone with an energy weapon with a slightly more subtle tone. ^^

  19. Well, I'm not really sure where to start, as these are amazing pieces of work. Taking such old and iconic Realm of Chaos miniatures and converting them is one thing, but to do it so well and sympathetically to the orginals is quite another.

They are a wonderful set of miniatures and very nicely painted. I love the crab red colour tone of Tresum, and the shock use of the red in comparison to the rest of the miniatures palette, which is both understated and nicely accented with dashes of colour.

My favourite miniature must be S'creempye. I love the conversion and the pose of the rifle. The book details of Samakutra, which links with his backgorund, is a nice detail, and the flesh tones of Bushita's arm and Astomoth's whip are really realistic and have a feel of movement.

All very impressive. Are you planning to do a warband for the other three major Chaos powers?

    1. Thanks a lot Lee !
I believe that the fact Jes Goodwin supervises the new kits and especially the Admech one, means his touch is everywhere hence making those parts totally compatible with his own work. That's such a joy. I do have plans to extend this band but haven't thought about the other gods... for now. ^^

  20. That's quite some outstanding work! Usually I don't really have a taste for Slaanesh, but your interpretation using mainly dark and muted colour set off against the more garish pink is a stroke of genius.

    1. Thanks, I really like to take different paths compared to what we're used to see so despite the pink, purple and all, I wanted to convey something more subtle. I'm glad you like this as I mean to expand the band a bit more !

  21. Cultists regardless of the chaos god they worship are usually a dreary lot. But yours look fantastic AND they are representative of Slaanesh as well. Now that's skill.

  22. Gawds damnit JB, how do you keep confidently keep on cutting up these beautiful old minis, and then make them just as cool as the original sculpts!?

Love all the descriptions and that the typical "Slaanesh" type pastel colours are shown at a minimum, with a far more dark and sinister look.

The only thing I think is missing is one might at least benefit from a hermaphroditic single boob on display? But that might be more my perverted mind throwing out ideas than anything else...

    1. I've thought about it and kept that back honestly, there was little point in having subdued colours and show boobs and willies alla round ! To be frank though, I am thinking about painting my Realm of Chaos era renegades so there will be boobage at some point !
