Long time no see huh ? Well I haven't totally been slacking off ! For a little time now, I've been working on some excellent and very original models, something of a niche inside a niche if you want.
With the genestealer hybrids becoming mainstream again thanks to the release of the amazing new stuff lately, my contradictory self had to play a bit...
Luckily enough for me, Uscarl Miniatures, private commissioners and no other than Citadel helped me get Orctober right.
The Adams orks just blend perfectly with the other orks of the period and it's why I've decided to link them with my ork warband. It echoes the fluff stating orks usually don't even notice or care about hybrids in the band.
After that we have something quite unique (AFAIK) in the form of snotling hybrids ! These are sculpted by Kev Adams again but if you're a little careful, they're not exactly sculpted in his usual style...
They're inspired by Paul Bonner's interpretation of them and I think it makes them look just brilliant with the talent of both masters combining in an orgy of greatness.

So here we have, the Coven is expanding quite well now and just by looking at the Uscarl miniatures, I already have quite a fancy group now !
If you want to get your hands on some of those tasty looking guys send Uscarl a PM HERE or look for them in Facebook HERE. ;)

They're more than enough to start being chased by bounty hunters and invading planets don't you think ? Maybe it's time to sculpt some purestrains or something or maybe get my brushes on some of those late and groovy plastic hybrids, who knows ? I don't...
Now you know how genestealers are, you never really get rid of them do you ? These are entirely Theottovonbismark's fault with his project Hybork...
I hope you'll have enjoyed those, I think I'll paint a few stand alone models for a while as I have a few commitments to honour.
In the meantime, cheers to you all and happy painting. ;)
Great skin tone, very nice idea to give a more purple-ish green to the hybrids
ReplyDeleteCheers, I wanted to keep the purple restricted enough to show the ork DNA wasn't as submissive as the human one. ^^
DeleteYou make me want to paint hybrids mec. All flavours! Even strawberry :D
ReplyDeleteI'm so waiting for your double strawberry with cadburry flake planted in it.
DeleteWhat a brilliant take on Orctober! I particularly like the way the slightly darker skin tone on the Ork Hyrbrids marks them out, but still lets them blend in with the rest of your ork warband. Fluffy and thrifty! ;)
ReplyDeleteCheers, I was trying to hit many birds with one stone here so had to be careful about it. I'm glad it waorked OK in the end. ^^
DeleteI'm always amazed by your ability to mix very different models and to make them look awesome together. Impressive warband, ready to infest new (under)worlds !
ReplyDeleteCheers, that was the intent here, trying to shoehorn many things into one so It's cool you like that.
DeleteThe grot on the far right is an awesome sculpt! Love it!
ReplyDeleteIt is, definitely, I shouldn't be saying that but those who like vanilla orks should just get them and snap the hybrids arms off to have perfect Bonner snots with no effort really !
DeleteFuck me drunk mate, they look bloody gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAs Stuntcat mentioned, the slightly different skin tone works very well.
The Heavy bolter dudes' ace X1000, his grin & gruesome shoulder pad are what makes him for me.
I think my Orctober entry will be another late one again too :(
Cheers buddy.
The base colour for the skin tone is closer to a blue than to a green and that's exactly what I needed to achieve a convincing tone. I also highlighted with grey to desaturate the colour and make it appear pale and slightly sick.
DeleteCheers mate.
I usually like my orcs with the brighter green skin, but this skintone works perfectly for this project. The whole thing ties together so well, great coven you got there!
ReplyDeleteRegular orks have a brighter skin but these had to stand from the others. Glad you like them mec !
DeleteExcellent way to celebrate Orctober so where can I get the Kev Adams snotlings to go with my theottovonbismark hyborks?
ReplyDeleteI've linked to a FB page you can get them from but drop a message on his blog (link above as well) and you should find a way to get some. ;)
DeleteSuperb mate - a niche within a niche indeed :-) As already commented, the skintone is sublime, and those Snots are fantastic... Love 'em mate!
ReplyDeleteCheers mate ! It's funny how satisfying it can be to tick that kind of box out !
DeleteLove these guys for so many reasons. Been smiling all the time I was reading this. Really made my day.
ReplyDeleteAwww, you're sweet ! They're a fun bunch of little guys tbh, I can easily imagine the kind of mess they cause in games with their non-sense. ;)
DeleteWoooo, I'm so drooling over the keyboard!
ReplyDeleteDon't get electrocuted amigo !Cheers ;)
DeleteYou've been a busy lad. Such characterful figs and they go nicely with your older Orks. And yes, that skin tone is a belter!
ReplyDeleteI've ben busy but a few things have prevented me from finishing them earlier. They're done though and the brotherhood has expanded nicely. I'd say I'm halfway done so we should have good stuff ahead yet !
DeleteFantastic work JB. Are they going to be appearing in a game anytime soon?
ReplyDeleteThat's always the target although I never quite know when games are happening. I tend to game with models I 've never played and the multi game campaign this year could definitely use some hybrids I guess !
DeleteCheers !
The staged photo (last one) is great. Who does the (cardboard?) buildings in the background. The backdrop is pretty sweet. Did you print out something out, or is it a commercial print?
ReplyDeleteThe cardboard scenery is from Klip n' play, I've got it recently and I find it pretty cool, might get some more actually. The backdrop is a simple cyberpunk wallpaper I printed on an A3 sheet. the scale is way too large actually but add buildings in front of it and it look good enough, or at least better than the kitchen wall. ;)
DeleteJB these are fantastic. I especially like the Grot with folded arms. So much character and attitude!
ReplyDeleteThey all fit perfectly in with the classic Ork-hybrid sculpts for sure.
Bravo mate, bravo.
Cheers, I like them a lot, just the right balance between menacing and tongue in cheek.
DeleteThese are choice JB, brilliantly executed.
ReplyDeleteYour painting was definitely what got me picking up that Uscarl range, they look so good here.
Well thanks ! It has to be the best compliment after being picked to paint them in teh first place. Makes my day in both cases.
DeleteYou have given your orks a whole different vibe to those GW ones and that's a good thing because they look awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff, I simply love it!
ReplyDeleteWere those cute gretchins custom made for you?
Thanks !
DeleteThey are designed by Uscarl MIniatures (check out their website) and if they're not available already they should be very soon. Send them a PM and you should know, with the others they could be under your Christmas tree. ^^
