Chaos Space Marines - Blackstone Fortress completed !

So with the release of warhammer Quest : Darkwater, my butterfly attention got back to Blackstone Fortress which we started playing with the kids. Having cleared a few runs, I could feel the impending need to have all the villains available soon.. Luckily, I only really had 3 left to do : the 2 chaos space marines and the chaos Lord Obsidius Mallex.

Now obviously, I also had this spare lord from the Dark Vengeance box (that was 6th ed damnit) so I had the occasion to clear a few projects off the list which I did !

I went with really fast grimdark textures with just a few neat details, I like my chaos marines really weathered and ancient looking.

Obsidius Mallex is a great model but I gt to say I was puzzled with the insane amount of organic tubes covering him all over, it looks like he just came out of an explosion in a sausage factory.

Anyway, I troed to not paint them all flesh and keep them not too bright and blended them in with washes. the models were mostly painted with thinned paint juices a bit like you'd work with enamels except for the cloaks and a few details where I wanted to keep some saturation.

The Dark Vengeance lord will come in Handy since we might encounter Obsidius Mallex several times and I'd like to keep the final boss as a single encounter so we can kill this generic "count as" lord for any time we have to face Obsidius but the last.

I love the sculpt but I din't know where to go with it so the positionning of colours and textures is not very inspired and could have been a lot better. The dark armour surrouned by a vivid cloak is probably the exact opposite of what it needs, a bright red and bras armour with a dark cloak would have been great but I just followed the process I've used for all the others and it's finally painted so y'know.

The 2 chaos marines that come with Obsidius are a great example of smart design, the whole Blackstone Fortress box is actually but these, like the rogue psykers, share the same boy with just a head swap but that's all it takes to make them look entirely different by changing the golden angle.

Just look at the picture below and you can clearly see one is resting while the other is shooting :

But place them next to one another in the same direction and you see how the head positionning changes everything.

I'm super happy to have this box completed and even happier to finally play (which I only had little hopes about). I got to say this is probably one of the best GW products I've ever had, the game itself is a little easy and abusable I reckon but it is nice with kids and we've had fun. The models though, now that's a flawless victory. No dud, best bangs for bucks for a box that kind.

Now let's move onto Darkwater already, it's already March so I'm only 3 months late, better than 7 years right ?
