Hey everyone, first post of the year so wishing you all the best for 2025 ! I've been quite busy, with house works and even some hobby but the list of painted and unblogged models is getting out of hands so here's the first project for you ! Lafig Miniatures is realeasing a brand new ambitious project of a skirmish game and the first band for this game are Sheik Hait-Malaif’s Sandcrawlers which will be available soon on Kickstarter HERE.
I got to say the miniatures really caught my eye when they were first previewed on Instagram and the sculpting by Denis Gonella is absolutely exquisite and very fine, while I had no real project for those, I knew I could fit them in plenty of existing projects. The first of which was Silver Baionet : Egypt but MOrdheim would obviously be a perfect candidate as well as Frostgrave and soon Dusterbourg, the official game those are designed for.
Now I know not much (if anything) might be period accurate with the rest but honestly, having a band of 1001 nights arabians chasing djinns, mummies and things like that is just the kind of box I want ticked on my hobby bingo card.
With all that in mind, I settled on a colour scheme, if you're a familiar of this place, you might have noticed colourful isn't exactly what I do most or best but I wanted to get a strong visual identity on those so I knew I wanted a very catchy yellow and soft blues to give that oriental feel. Adding some red was a real puzzle becaue that was taking the risk of displaying the 3 primary colours on a model which is kind of a no-no. I "solved" (or at least hope I did) by toning the red down a lot to a burgundy and destaurating the blue so that only the yellow would stand out. That even left sme space for hints of pink here and there which I found fun.
The leader of the band will be sheik Yerbouti (iykyk), I really love the commanding presence of this guy, you can't really tell if his big cimitar is just for show or if it's tasted flesh before.
Now we have an occultist in the most iconic style you may think of, he's a simple model but features everything yo want from an oriental magi.
Now the Djinn is a very cool figure, I wanted to give him a smokey look, like he's mostly incense fumes with a few tangible items and of course I wanted to give him firey eyes. I love the pony tail turning into smoke again, nice little detail.
Now you obviously want a deadly dancer/assassin in such a band and the one you get is just perfectly, very elegant
And because a sheik can't have just any regular pet, you obviously want the band followed by an imposing black panther
I imagine this guy as a former slave turned body guard whoe martial prowess have earned him a respectable place in the band for his efficiency and reliability.
I reckon this guys is the prince Enbeikh, looking to prove his worth and eventually take his father's place when needed.
Then of course you have all your soldiers armed with an array of weapons to face all situations
I really love this animal handler with his whip and gigantic blade, you can tell he's seen a lot and his experience is invaluable for the team !
I also tried to keep the shields very similar to tie everyone together, I'm not a shield expert like my friend Jean Peinture but I tried to emulate his technique with my mediocre skills.
I hope you enjoyed these guys, I really did, check out their kickstarter, this band is coming soon and others as well as a whole skirmish game with different factions so check it HERE.
