Chaos Beastmen - Blackstone Fortress

Hey everyone ! A little more Blackstone fortress again !
Those groups of 4 villains have been extremely rewarding lately, a great achievement/effort ratio and therefore perfect hobby mojo boosters so I've continued with the beastmen.
These guys might not look like the pick of the box amongst all the wonderful models available but I've quickly grown fond of them and how very smart the design is.
The first striking thing is that the beastmen are now considerably bigger than average humans like the cultists in the same box, that alone gives them a real menace and they bear enough "human" gear along their beast traits to make them proper hybrids. Thei slightly haunched back also makes them more bestial than the former gym rats with goat heads from previous incarnations.
But the models... It's a silly thing really but with 2 pairs and a clever break of parts, whoever designed them maanged to allow for several variants (each bearing similarities of course) but at least you have 4 sufficiently different models out of the box unlike the Ur-ghuls or negavolt cultists. One other thin I like is that the hair braids are more defined than on many modern plastic models where hair is more suggested than sculpted. I'm an old timer and I like simple things like drybrushing hair on models to save time so these really are the best of both worlds in my view.

Now I had the opportunity to paint those beastmen for a Realm of Chaos game for BOYL19 (in the before times) but I rerolled for 2 ogres (proxied with rogue trader minotaurs). They obviously share some common traits and now I want to add some slightly smaller ones to the pack and perhaps go full Jake Vlemmix with old /3rd/4th ed goats...

Anyway, I'm getting closer to finihing this box and my chaos forces are growing so I'm winning on all counts !

Oh and following that time I painted 13 rats, it turns out I had a 14th to do... I guess fate wanted me to just paint 13 then to channel as much blessings from the rat god but here's the annoying bugger painted as well to join the others at last !

Hope you folks enjoy your painting and hobby and have a good time !

  1. They look great. The models are really good sculpts, too. What's the slightly greenish-bone colour you used on the minotaur's skin and some of the cloth? It's very distinctive. Anyway, great work!

    1. They're great sculpts, no question,love them.
The off white is stone grey from PA, I absolutely love it, superb covering and tone and the greenish tint offsets reds so well.
      Thanks !

  2. I love these models. I wish they'd release a whole boxed set of them for 40K proper with lots of posing options. Great paint jobs mate.

  3. These look really great! I'm actually working on these guys at the moment! I like how you built one with two pistols and another with two swords. I'm really digging the different skin and fur tones you've used too!

    1. Thanks ! I really believe small variations make a big difference for those kind of models to keep them visually tied with a varied look.

  4. Nice work JB, really like the pink areas around the nose, ears and eyes. It really does sell the idea that these are credible real life creatures.

    1. Thanks, I feel these little details often make the difference between semi credible creatures and guys wearing rubber suits in a 90's movie.
