OK so there was a small challenge on a french FB hobby page and the subject was... monopose monstrosies...
For some reason I can hardly resist those kind of challenges especially when they give me the right motive to paint some stuff I want to paint but can't be arsed to. Anyway, that meant I knew immediately that I wanted to paint a 2nd ed gretchin because it has got to be one of the most evocative of those models.
40k's 2nd edition was out a couple of years after I started playing so it was the first I got to know from start till the end and its aesthetic is very evocative to me. Of course I went the easy/lazy way and just applied the very same colour scheme I did on all my greenskins in hop I some day realise I have a huge force of them !
Of course I'll "need" plenty more in due time (although I won't paint 39 more of this model) but for now I quite like to have a silly and mischievous little guy hanging around the bosses !
I like seeing all sorts of Adams green skins hanging together !
I have something quite more prestigious and demanding than a gretchin but like often, small rushed jobs like those are fast rewarding and hence perfect to build some momentum and mojo for more ambitious stuff !

DeleteThis is about as nice as I've ever seen one of these grots painted. At a glance, I'd be unable to pick him out as the plastic monopose model amongst the rest of your greenskins. The red tones on the skin and the star on his back go a long way to selling the figure - it's a level of detail you just don't usually see on these guys. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteand the star is just a minute worth of work really but yes it does help, if I were to paint 40 without conversion I'd add patterns and swap colours to give as much variety without introducing colours I reckon.

DeleteI totally know what you mean and I agree on the subject. This particular one is likely one of the most iconic minis ever. I think it's fully representative of a whole era, so it's hard not to have a soft spot for this lil bugger. Cool paintjob!!

ReplyDeleteThese Gretchin always puzzled me as a kid, whether they were Goff or not. The Orks in the 2E starter are clearly Goff, but the Gretchins' colour scheme of predominantly red and not that Goff. I'm still undecided if the pickelhaube is meant to be generic Orc, or a Goff signifier. Likewise the later metal Gretchin had very horned helmets.
I always thought they were Goff oriented with the spiked helmet and leather ear protection. I also love how they wear a gun that must be as heavy as they are. ^^
