Pimple my ride - Nurgle Palanquin for Rogue Trader

Hi there, I'm in the final steps of my tale of several gamers so still trying to finish as much as I can for my Chaos renegades. I've only realized last month I haven't painted a single character in this challenge and thought I could use some leadership. Now of course I couldn't settle on something simple could I ?
And that's how I remembered I had this Nurgle Palanquin with no less than 3 potential riders, all fitted with Magnets !
Best part of which being one is pretty neutral and could be your regular undivided chaos lord.

Since I didn't have enough corks to put the riders on, I had the best idea in the world (aka worst idea ever, don't do this at home) and pinned all three on the same cork !

Now this one is a fun one. I've had this really worn out Marneus Calgar in my pile for a long time but the details were so soft he looked like he had had a few spins in the washing machine. Not exactly the model you're really eager to paint...
But with the possibility of making him a Warlord, things were a little different.
I tried to keep neutral enough with just a little mutation and altered armour. I didn't even change the decorations because I believe he's still somehow proud of them and he probably only got in the heresy business lately...

Manspreading like an evil boss

Of course you might best see what the miniature truly looks like when superbly painted by someone with the skill and talent to do it justice :

From Curis's Ninjabread

Next rider is the funny guy, you can tell he's a party boy with both guns in the air and he's probably one to overdo things because he's lucky (I mean, Meltagun AND plasma pistol... jeeez).

And last but definitely my favourite nonetheless, that guy has a bit of a wizard's look but he's holding a shuriken catapult (which is pretty cool I find).
His face is concealed by his hood and he's probably a remote cousin of Judge Death, the horned king, Skeletor or Slough Feg...

For a little change I didn't add the original 2 banners so it looks a bit different and I had to change the seat part which looked too fantasy and couldn't take Calgar's manspreading.
I also had a quick read in the Lost and the Damned bookand realised I needed sticky pools to represent the trails of slime and filth nurglings leave in their path.

Painting the nurglings took a good while since my OCD wouldn't let me paint two of the same colour next to one another.

I'm also pretty happy with the gross textures I managed to get with different technical paints such as Typhus corrosion, nurgle's rot or blood.

This is the third palanquin I've painted, the first was stripped and repainted but here are the last 2 next to each other. I know I was quite happy with it at the time (and still am to some extent) but I like to see the evolution.

I still have a few things left to paint this month and Nurgley things too, there's little time left but everything should be OK !

  1. I always knew Calgar would turn to Chaos. Love the slime pool tokens.

  3. Three different riders for one palanquin, hard-core. Plus a fantasy one... we will make a fart-guzzling follower of Grandpa out of you yet!

The Calgar idea is great, and we'll executed.

    1. Thanks ! There's a bit of influence from your own work in those so I'm glad you like them !

  5. Thanks for the shout out!

I love the triple-action of the riders. Calgar has a very different silohuette with the Chaos backpack.

Have you got a Chaos Toilet these three can take turns on too?

    1. The backpack suits him doesn't it ?
I do have a chaos toilet and it just has to happen now.

  6. The idea of using Calgary on the palaquin is genius!

  7. Great idea using that original Calgar model. A better execution than it was originally sculpted for I think. But even better that you magnetized it (options rock!) as it gives you options for additional riders in the future also.

    1. Anything that doesn't make him look like he's on the toilets is an improvement anyway. ^^
      Thanks !

  8. Yes, converting Calgar was a genius move mate. He really looks amazing in his new role.

Did you use some of that Typhus corrosion on other parts of the mini too? I think I can see it on the tongue of the plasma dude and on the back of the seat on the palanquin as well. Are my assumptions correct?

I've never been able to get hold of the nurglings for the palanquin, got all the other bits, half converted into something else of course.

    You did a grand job JB......good :)

    1. No typhus corrosion on flesh parts, just in corners whee rust would gather but it's a fun product to use.
      Thanks papa !

    2. I don't know why I typed Typhus corrosion. I meant Nurgles rot. You used that shit in those areas I mentioned?

  9. Well that is some excellent execution and magnetizing 3 different characters is a great idea. They all look stunning. But the slime pools really take it up to 11. Awesome stuff JB!

    1. Magnets are cheaper than palanquins these days ! The slime pools took some trial and error but I ove as they are now.
      Cheers mec !

  11. As others mentioned, great use of Calgar, particularly if that particular figure was soft.

Now that you have three options for one mount, you could make other mounts and then mix them up? Some sort of dragon slug, or huge mutant would fit the theme.

    1. His face is honestly a disgrace but I didn't feel confident with putty to significantly make it better so I just went full chaotic. At this point I should have swapped the head actually !
I could have new mounts of course, that's the beauty of it. ^^

  14. I'm late to the party, so I can only agree with the above; great use of the riders, specially Calgar, which shouldn't really fit in that set- but he does! I also like the WIP stuff I can spot on the pics ;) Looking forward to more!

  15. Some fine farty business here mec, while reading this on the train I could smell the heady aromas of fresh turds and flatus, and while it's probably just the hobo guy a few seats over, in my heart I know it was actually Manureus Calguff sharting in his big boy chair. Well done!

    1. Mec, I thinned my paints with sweet delicate farts and varnished the whole model with three layers of rancid burps. Oh and all the gap filling was done with Smegma.

  17. I now know what I am going to do with my random arse Marneus Calgar that I've had in my bits box for 20 years... Thanks!

Love all of this and so good to see you working on a Nurgle warband!

  18. Absolutely fantastic work!

The three pinned to one cork... A carousel of chaos?

The riders are all wonderful, but I think the Calgar one is my favourite and that's a really nice glow effect on his power gloves. Also spending the extra time on the Nurglings was definitely worth it.
