Quick one today, just wanted to show some close shots of the scenery I painted for my games of Shadow wars and other skirmish games.
The main part was painting the pillars, walkways and platforms as well as all the little details that fit underneath.
Given the very limited time (one day) I had to paint those, I opted for speed painting techniques.
All parts were primed black then zenithal sprayed with lead belcher. This creates a preshading which is very convenient.
Even the platforms were painted sprayed sideways to keep the recesses darker.
I painted a few details were painted but not all (it would take too much time and would look too dumb imho).
The next phase was to shade all those parts with Agrax earthshade and spots of Nuln oil here and there to create nuances.
Then, I added orange, blue and sepia washes in random spots and mixed them in some places with water to blend them and avoid the metals too look too dul.
Throw a leadbelcher drybrush after this and you get this result :
The platforms and their fences were painted the same way with a dark red as a base in the inner areas.
The last thing I added was a series of very thinned Skrag brown (I really mean VERY thinned) which was thrown in places where rust would mostly build up.
This makes a great rust effect without having to get the pigments out.
All in all, It worked very well and I managed to finish everything in time (at midnight though) for the day after !
Here are some shots of how the scenery looks on a table :
Spot on! Quick and effective are the two prerequisites for any terrain painting techniques.
ReplyDeleteThey often come with "messy" but hey, you can't win on every front !
DeleteThanks !
Thats an amazing output for a days painting. . . . . Meth? ;0)
ReplyDeleteWith Meth I would have converted and painted a couple more bands ! ;)
DeleteSuperb!
ReplyDeleteCheers mate.
DeleteLooks the goods mate :)
ReplyDeleteIt was very rewarding to get them done and ready for the games !
DeleteExcellent work! Really like how mottled the color of the metal looks, makes it seem old and worn... exactly as you would like for a project like this.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, I wanted something easy to read but which would look weathered and worn out.
DeletePainting terrains is something yet to sink its claws on me but looking at your work sure makes it tempting to try painting up some terrain myself!
ReplyDeleteScenery really is something else. I was really scared by it but the more I work on that, the more I realise it can be very rewarding ! I really see painting terrain from another perspective and it's actually very refreshing.
DeleteReally nice A-Man.
ReplyDeletePainting terrain has to be fast or you can go mad.
It can be rewarding when well approached but it can be a hassle if you don't know where you're going.
DeleteThanks !
I despise painting terrain. Feel like it takes my precious (little) hobby time away from painting my huge backlog of miniatures!
ReplyDeleteLovely work mate. Simple, yet very effective.
I used to despise it as well but have found it very rewarding lately, I just had to consider it differently to enjoy it.
