Inquisitor Greyfax - Keeper of His word

Sometimes you just need to step aside and consider things from another angle. That's why I sometimes try to do at least. I was given the opportunity to do exactly that by the friendly folks at my friendly local gaming shop.

The idea between us is to build and paint each a band in the Inq28/Inquisimunda/Grimdark vibe to later play a campaign.

So after picking a few bits from different kits, I came up with the idea of a puritan inquisitor band.
The release of the (then) new triumvirate was a good start and Katarinya Greyfax was a model with much potential. It had elements I disliked though, so I removed a good bit of the steampunk elements to make her a bit more casual. I also decided to push things a little further down the creepy alley by adding a big implant on her forehead. I imagine she got hurt in a fight and that she decided to get a holy water dispensor plugged in place to ensure her brains would only come up with pure thoughts...

Because the Full grimdark crazy thing isnot exactly my forte, I tried to use colours to help me get something dark so I started my usual method to do black armours with a zenithal spray of white over a black undercoat followed by highlights to pick edges :

All in all, I'm quite happy with how she turned out. For some reason, I don't get accustomed to painting plastic models this precise and detailed so there's always a bit of pain in the process.

The engraved markings on the cloak for instance were a bit disturbing for me but they were not as big anisue as I thought they'd be in the end.

I think a little sobriety fits this model well. Since I was doing things inspired by the whole grimdark/blanchitsu scene, I couldn't help but twisting things my way and came up with an alternative I shamelessly call "Blueshitsu". I'll develop this on the coming models (about 5 or 6 more).

I know realise I have 3 inquisitors now which feels kind of odd especially since 2 of them are women ! (Still need some ethnic diversity though).
Can't really say what's coming next right now but isn't that the beauty of this all ? ^^

  1. I really like the holy water dispenser - it adds an interesting touch of character to her back story.

The dusty black armour is a nic contrast to the shining gold of the studio interpretation too.

Did you sculpt the hair BTW?

    1. I wasn't sold on the gold version honestly but the armour remains one of the best I've ever had to paint. I did sculpt the hair, probably not my best piece, the head actually comes from one of the plastic flying nuns that come in the box.

  2. I'm not familiar with the mini JB, but it looks great! Could you point me to the original please?

I like the rusted armour effect, how'd you do that?

She looks Boss mate, well done :)

    1. She's a new (old in the fluff) Inquisitor for the latest campaign and she comes with other guys :

The rusted amrour is simple as can be, I just do the armour black by throwing a wash of black and medium over a zenithaled and drybrushed base basically. Then I take browns and oranges and dilute them to the max, you must see the pigments seperating. then apply that in recesses and around rivets, teh result will be quite discrete but you can repeat it until your happy, it can give the same effect as pigmets to some extent but with an easier way.
      Cheers !

    2. Thanks mate!

I don't keep up with GW releases anymore, so I miss out on quite a lot :)

Thanks for the recipes too JB, the black effect and rust sound like a piece of piss to achieve, and they looks ace! The perfect painting technique :)

      Cheers.

  3. Love it! Removal of the stupid crossbow bolter and the had really makes this figure much better looking, and the restrained paint job is perfectly suited to the figure (although some might go the other way and make a puritan ultra flamboyant!)

And I am excited to see the modified gemini figure too...

    1. You've noticed the little teaser haven't you !
Glad you approve of the choices here, they were obvious to me but they might not be to others. ^^

  5. I like the changes: particularly the better weapon. Great paint job too.

    1. The weapon is the original minus xbow and with gaps filled, the van helsing style is a bit OTT when combined with grimdark elements in my view.
      Thanks!

  6. The absurd hat was really annoying for me, your approach seriously improves the model. Cool conversion and fantastic paintjob!

    1. I'm sure will be OK on another model but there was too much going on on the original for my taste.
It's a very well designed model though, no question.

  7. Really nicely done JB, nice conversion touches, (big improvement imo), and that armour looks fantastic! Love it :-)

  8. You knocked it out of the park.. the paintjob is just sublime , the swirls on the cloak tails and cyan as a spot colour are brilliant how did you achieve that dusty rust wash may i ask..?

    1. Well thanks !
The rusty aspect is quite simple really, it's inspired from how dry pigments work with white spirit but with paint and water only.
Take a leathery brown and thin it with water beyon what you'd do to get an even coverage, you want to see the pigments seperating on your palette, then apply it in the recesses and around rivets and where rust and dirt would end (don't load your brush too much, you want control and to apply real thin coats here). You can repeat the operation till you're happy.
I find a coat of leathery brown followed by a few touches of cadmium red (or even orange) here and there to be just enough.
      Hope it's clear enough ! ^^

    2. Yep cheers , I did think it reminded me of pigments on vehicles. It's a great effect thanks for sharing.

  9. love the idea of the bottle of water pouring her skull with whatever wanabe-holy-liquid she finds in any dark alley..
"hey look, of bottle at the feet of this holy statue!"
"ma'am, be careful, it could be some hobbo's piss.."
"nonsense! it's a gift and blessing from the holy [insert a name] carved in this holy stone! be careful with your words igor!"
.. and then she gets even more stupid...

  10. Love the updates you made to the model, it looks way better then the GW version in my very humble opinion. And thanks for giving some tips on that amazing looking black armor you painted. I am going to find a model that needs black armor tomorrow and try it.

    1. Cheers, it's a simple technique given to me by the guys at my flgs. You can decline it in many forms including with paint over a metallic prime coat which makes it look awesome (red paint over gold prime for instance).

  11. Your small changes are spot on. The hat also annoyed me - it just looked silly. Now she looks like a bad-arse Battlesister, as she should.

I'm jealous - wish I had an LGS close enough with like-minded gamers to start up projects like this.

    1. I'm quite lucky really, mine really puts the F in FLGS. The hat isn't bad per se but it's just a tad too much for one model in my view.
      Thanks !

  14. Very nicely done JB.

I have limited interest in the dull and repetitive Blanchitsu scene, but I like what you did with this. I like all of the models in that particular triumvirate and you have brought out a lot of the best elements of the Greyfax fig with you painting, well done.

    1. I'm aware there are things we've seen countless time and I wanted to offer my take on it. I'm not a real OTT fan so trying to find the right balance was the most important thing to me.
      Thanks !

  15. Seems I am rather alone in liking Greyfax's crossbow and hat :( I think the hat fit with her role as a witch-hunter and a automatic crossbow that fires hightech bolts is, in my mind, something that’s really fitting in the gothic future of the 41th millennium.

Not saying that you did the right thing when you removed them, you did a wonderful job with both the conversion and the paintjob :)

    1. It honetsly fits with the character and how the whole late releases are a bit over the top. It' smore a question of taste here, I wanted her to look simple amongst her monstrous servants and I tend to prefer suggestion over statements in my hobby if you see what I mean.

    2. Oh, I do.

  16. Love the conversion work you've put into this, excising the goofy elements like the wide brim leather hat. Makes her so much more menacing!

But yes thanks, I think it only takes a bit of modifications to make it brilliant. ^^

  17. Sorry to dig up this thread from the dark ages but I have some questions as I try to re create this amazing armour!
Are you drybrushing silver or white? It’s not obvious in the photos.
Win you say wash of black and medium, you’re not using ink (such as Nuln Oil), but rather black paint rhinos with medium?
    Thanks! Awesome stuff!

    1. Hey there, I'm spraying white over a black undercoat and picking raised areas by highlighting or gently drybrushing, no silver.
The black wash is black paint, medium and water, to use inks (nuln oil is not an ink but a ready made wash) you'd need something like PVA to pull the pigments into the recesses, it's too pigmented for this kind of work, contrasts paints would be great though.
      Hope this helps 😁
