Dogs of war

Quick post today, just to show you a handful of dogs I've painted for a Mordheim Campaign WE in Febuary. Those dogs are Witch hunter dogs from the Mordheim range and have been very kindly donated by the GM so that I have dogs). I'm going to play my champions of Law as witch hunters and  though I know next to nothing about Mordheim gaming wise, everyone keeps telling me I need as much dogs as I can afford; since I sense they might be super cheezy, I've decided to take a middle ground between 0 and 5  :

Only 2 variants are available so I tried to change the ginger patterns from one to another to add a little variety in the team. They are nice little sculpts although they are ridiculously too big to be normal dogs...

I'll leave you with something a little more punchy to wake you folks up :

  1. Punk dogs! They'll look good alongside that Maniac gang too ;)

You're pumping figures out at a rate of knots now JB!

    1. They could very well go along the maniacs Jon, though the comparison with the elite ganger rottweiler is a bit weird...
Don't thinkI'l paint more than this for 2015 though I'd have loved not to end 2015 on dogs... ^^'

    1. Cheers mate, simple but effective, loads of drybrushes and picking up details here and there, I love that kind of job where you can nail 3 models in very little time !
Funny accent on your dog impression, dogs out here are more like "OUAF OUAF" ;)

  3. I like them! Great subtle tones on the fur, JB. What was the colour used on the harnesses?

    1. Cheers Ed, I wanted to ginger part to contrast with the black parts and the black parts to remain dark enough. The harnesses are painted the same was as the brown parts on the champions of Law but with starker contrasts , you can find the colours here :

  4. You should love Mordheim.

We had a nightmare playing against the 'Witch finder' on our campaign earlier this year http://riotvilleonfire.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Mordheim . In the early stages I would argue quantity is more important then quality. The dogs are useful as they keep your heros out of the action.

    1. Oh cool ! Love the LEGO version ! ^^
I'm not a hard player so my opponents don't have to fear much but let's keep them thinking otherwise ;)

    2. Thanks, the LEGO Mordheim was one of my favourate things from this year.

As to not being a 'hard player', wait until you have rolled a couple of double ones on the casualty table, you might discover yourself getting a little bit 'harder';0)

  5. Nice!! They are a cool addition, I love how they look. You could dare to dye their fur a little! Hehehe...

    1. I'm not brave as you Suber ! I willingly kept a traditional look to be able to field them in multiple contexts (don't really want to paint dogs all the time...)
      Thanks my friend !

  6. Funny, I just posted up a doberman. Your Rott's would eat him though at their size I think. :)

    Very nice work.

    1. Yours is clearly better scaled, I have anothe rdog coming in a more realistic scale and the size difference is quite shocking...
      Thanks a lot !

  8. Great models and great paint jobs.
At the risk of sounding ridiculous, I'll also say that I love the hex bases that you use. I always thought that hexes were the most attractive shape of base, and I'm sorry that more games didn't use them. I painted up a whack of Talisman miniatures, and I always felt bad that I didn't have the courage to bases them all on hexagons (I chose not too because I wanted to be able to use some of the miniatures for other games, like Advanced Heroquest or Descent). Anyway, Happy New Year!

It doesn't sound ridiculous at all, I wich I had based models on hexes before really, it's far much better than square and it still has some advantages of it. The retro look and way you can assemble models together is just too good. Since I won't be painting much armies now I think most of my fantasy models are going to be based on those.

  9. I am most impressed with the black you have achieved on your rather ferocious dogs. I can never quite produce a black that I am truly happy with, as the shade either looks to flat and dull, or just too damn grey! Superb stuff. Your freehand on the shield of that thug also caught me eye, as I am a sucker for chequers, and your combination of that pattern, with an eldaresque icon, looks very effective. Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks James, I've actually found a very cool looking german grey that is very dark and enables to drybrush over black or to be shaded with black inls without looking grey. Just a very slight drybrush of medium grey is applied to enhance a few raised areas and bob's your uncle !
Thanks for the shields, the icon is actually the only representation of a Law symbol apart from the Tyr rune, you can see where I took it from in this post :
