Champions of Law - Age of Sigmar Oldhammer style

Some models have a funny story, some don't, well this one wasn't planned to be painted a day before it was done. How's that ? Let me tell you...

A couple of days ago, My good friend Colin posted a superb illustration on the Oldhammer Facebook page :

What really captured our attention was the sign worn by the champion (I think it's actually Stephen who spotted this). This triple crossed arrow seems to be the symbol of Law, the arch enemy of chaos. Those who've read the opening of their realm of chaos books and their Warhammer fantasy Roleplay book will know that Law was meant to be the exact anthisesis of Chaos but for some reason the concept was never fully developed and abandoned little by little.
If you do want to know a bit more about Law and its pantheon, you might want to read this thread on the Oldhammer forum.

The very few models known to have been attached to Law (not a complete list here) are :

Demons of Law :
Picture form Solegend

More about those models HERE
But let's get back to our topic... the most observative amongst you (or those who do happen to own the model) will have noticed that amongst the Jes Goodwin champions from he CH3 series, Stro'knor Macekiller bears an insigna with the arrow of Law... what a funny idea !

Picture taken from Solegend

Since there's never been much description about how champions of Law are dressed I thought I'd do something funny and use this champion (I had 4 like him just a week ago) and paint it like I was going to play Age of Sigmar (I know that's a sordid thing to do but I'm just that silly).
Stormcast eternals are after all the new form of champions of Law right ? Even though it's all about Sigmar and not a word about the former gods...
The idea was also to see if a iconic champion of Chaos as Stro'knor could be a good champion of Law...

So it's all about Gold, white and expensive bling, it that it ? Well I'll give you Gold, Snow leopard fur and fine leather how about that ? Oh and glowing eyes too ! Lookn even the shoes and mace are in fine metals !

The leopard fur is a late addition I owe to our dear Theottovonbismark, It really does break the monotony of the model and adds that little bit of nobility.
I wanted to use the most restricted palette I could for this model, just for fun and as a way to see if I could make it "readable" enough without using colour contrasts and all. I think it worked pretty well in the end though a full unit of them (not even talking of an army) could look dull "en masse". The only spot colour I authorised myself was the blue I used for the eyes. The paintjob is a quick one (for me) as it was done in under 3 hours from raw to complete.

A couple of checkers and arrows of Law for good measure...
There's a very dangerous question now... you may have seen the model is based on a hex base like I base most of my Fantasy characters meant for roleplay... but if this one proves good enough to embody a champion of Law, Why wouldn't I make more, you, know, I talked about this issue before...

Frightening isn't it?

I'll let you decide if it's a good idea or not.
And since I have the beginning of an Eternal Stormcast army, why can't I play Age of sigmar using those rules I recently received in the post ?

Yep, that's right, a copy of Warhammer's first french version (a translation of the 2nd english edition). look at those Blanche illustrations... Lovely !
I'm not sure about what to post next yet but I do have a couple of models getting near the "done" pile... bets are on if you want !

  1. If only there was a warband he could join...you know, a group legacy type project ;)

He looks very nice JB. The gold and leather gives a suitably bling look, while keeping him hands-off (unlike the Sigmarites which are all bling and no counterpoint).

    Do we expect more?

    1. Do we expect more ? I don't know, maybe... little by little, if I were to find those demons of law for instance... I do own the knghts of the cleansing flame after all...
The leather look a little greenish on the pictures when it seems a little warmer in real... anyway.
      Glad you like him !

  2. Interesting find JB :)

Even though I've got this guy I never paid much attention to his symbol.

I like seeing the different artwork that other countries get too. I've got a Japanese version of FF & it's....."different" :)
Even the Australian ROC books were slightly changed.... the coloured artwork in the back.

    Cheers JB :)

  3. Thanks for the info JB. I didn't know there were any law minis. The lab is to build a temple accompanying the legacy warband and these guys could play a part :)

    Lovely paint jobs too!

    1. A temple would be super cool indeed ! DO IT !
Kidding ... but do it really.

      Cheers ;)

  4. Cool idea and lovely painting. Like I mentioned on that thread I always thought the lack of a "Realm of Law" book was a wasted opportunity: clerics, angels, knights in spotless shining armour, etc. As a lad I was so hoping GW would do something. Plus Moorcock had already done much of the concepts, they just had to borrow it like they always did ;-)

If you're searching for other models, the Marauder foot Reiksguard, which are gigantic models, would work well with some small conversions. I always thought they had the look and size of Warriors of Law.

    1. I think there are plenty of models really which could do (as much as for Chaos or even more actually) but what I'd like to do is set rules just like in the RoC books to roll Realm of Law warbands with demons for each god, gifts instead of mutations and all...

  5. Following the golden thread to the end of the post - the Combat book from the French version...isn't that the illustration from the 'Heroic Warriors Of The Known World' (basically, 'Goodly Knights Of Law' in my book) box set of Citadel minis? I could be wrong. Need. More. Coffee.

    1. Exactly, and look what you can find on one of them : an Tyr rune, or arrow of law... gosh I'm just so good.

      Take care ;)

  6. That's a really nice interpretation of a classic model, the colour choices and overall paint job is sweet. When I got my hands on this model, the first thing I did was scrape the symbol of law away and replace it with three blobs of greenstuff for Nurgle!

    2. That's the charm of Oldhammer. After all these years we can find something new on a model that we have looked at forever. Awesome paintwork JB. ;)

    3. Cheers Thomas, it's true it's the prospect of rediscovering a whole new zone that's exciting about this !

  7. After that FB thread the other day I had to start on Stro'knor myself - I'm glad I went for different colours as you've been ever so speedy in your completion! Yours looks great - making gold, silver, and bronze work together on a single model is impressive. Well done, mon ami :)

    1. Honestly this was a rush ob to ride the wave you had started and get a little break from all the half finished models I've decided to finish. Bit now the warband had been started, there's no stopping is there ?
Looking forward to seeing yours !

  8. I never realized about that sign! Wow, the possibilities are endless... I really like the approach and the connection you made with the new Sigmarites. Nice job!!

    1. Well I hadn't realised either before this was brought to my attention really ! And the worst thing is tha tthis model has been the base for my 40k chaos lords for years now...

  9. I like the idea -- looking for inspiration in old Warhammer stuff, and treating AoS as just another of the many ingredients in the soup.

    1. I found it funny to link all this to AoS afterwards, it actually didn't have any impact on the finished product. Now digging in the unexplored zones of a fictionnal universe (WHFB in that case) with modelling, now that is something I enjoy a lot, it gives me the same kind of feeling that Iget after a good RPG session.
