Astral hound

Today's a quick one. A couple of months ago (well more like 4 couples of months ago actually) I got a funnly little sculpt amongst some Judge Dredd Citadel models. The figure looked like some sort of mutated pitbull and I thought at the time it could probably act as a good genestealer infested dog. teh style and scale though didn't do it for me so I thought about how to use it...

Now it did remind me of something I'm sure you'll recognise too : Slimer from Ghostbusters,

The fat levitating form with a wide mouth made it quite close to the dirty little green spectre from the movie and it immediatley made me think about something : Ghost + dog + Rogue trader = Astral Hound

Astral Hound illustration taken from the Rogue Trader Rulebook.

Mainly because green would have looked silly and because an ethereal form  would have been a tedious work, I opted for a very pale paintjob consisting in the use of many washes and glazes over a very light grey to give the impression of a very thin and almost transluscent skin. I wanted the hound to look tangible and therefore leathal. I realise I could have tried to paint the shift between ethereal and tangible forms (like above) but I got carried away with the painting and forgot about it.
I think the fact it's floating and the many little eyes make it clearly more than just hound dog.

You just can't tell if the front  or rear are the scariest with that guy...

The model is from Figone's range and is acually called a "Voreur" (that'd be Vorer in english). You can see it painted by Master genius Jeremie Bonamant-Teboul :

All in all that was a really fun model to paint and while the amazing level of detail could have used a far more advanced level of painting than mine, the details were not a problem and the lovely textures here and there really made this a pleasant couple of hours to spend.

Now, it is quite unlikely taht i'll make a pack of them but Ithink a dungeon game (heroquest or spacehulk) with adventurers coming upon such werird creatures in the depths of underhive sewers would be very cool I think...

  1. Nice approach! I didn't know of that mini, it certainly makes its part! I used akula's 'Croc Hounds' (http://akulasarmies2.blogspot.co.uk/), but yours looks really creepy, like a Warp entity ready to jump over a victim. Well done!!

    1. I remember you using those and i loved them a lot. This one though was looking a little more cartoony which I found fun (and it was cheap as I got it second hand). I think etehreal creatures have the advantage to come in as many forms as we want.
      Thanks a lot !

    1. After painting some parts you don't feel like licking your brush as usual...

  5. Very nice JB - it works splendidly for the intended purpose. All you need now is some other warp creatures to hang around with it...the astral spectre is next, right?!

    1. Al kinds of Astral whatevers will be fine for this I guess. Between the dungeon game and a safari where RTs try to get collect as many specimens.. I don't know which I'd wnat to play the most but there sure is some good fun to be had here.

      thanks a lot.

  6. Gosh the colours you used for the Astral hound are simply magnificent!
May I ask what colours did you use, especially the skin and tongue?

    1. The skin is probably what was left of my foundation deneb stone (don't have anymore left) a slight seopia wash (diluted 2 or 3 times) and then slight glazes of blue and red depending on areas.
The tongue has a bas coat of blue I can't remember right now (will find it tonight) and received the same treatment as the skin. I blended glazes together in some areas while they were wet to create some effects. The belly and genitals received some more red glazes and the tongue got a final glaze of blue after a very light drybrush of soft blue. The belly is full of sores and pustules which look very nice wih just a little wash and glaze.
      Thanks a lot !

  7. I like the "Sci-Fi Dungeon" idea.

As for this charming little fella, I think the colour scheme you picked fits really well with Rogue Trader, but I'll admit a part of me is disappointed he's not bright green ;-) Then again I was and am a gigantic fan of Ghostbusters.

    1. If I am do to do Slimer Iannick, I'll do him properly for a nurgle theme yo know ! The more I think about it the more a humans Vs monsters Space hulk game makes sense to me. Since I'm not an expert at this or even Heroquest, I'll try and see which one would be the best.

  9. I think you sell yourself short on the paintjob, it looks great. I can picture this as a summoned daemon or daemon host for a heretical inquisitor... Perhaps the villain to your sensei warband!

    1. It's meant to look good from a little distance but it really is just about cheap tricks here ! It's true it could be a perfect pet for a good villain ! I should think about making an archetypical villain, nemesis to my sensei hero...
      Great idea, thanks !

  10. Really brilliant work with the washes... you certainly achieved the effect you were aiming for. And thanks for introducing me to the Figone model range... I had never heard of them.
