The Space Hobbo - Oldhammer Legacy Warband 2015

OK so it's the time of year when I wake up and try and fulfill my promises. One of my commitment was to model something for the Oldhammer 2015 legacy warband. After painting my transgender Asgard barbarian last year for the 2014 warband (see this and this if you don't get the meaning of it), I had to paint a turquoise pirate for Rogue trader.

I knew I wanted my pirate to be immediately recognisable as coming from Rogue trader so after some thoughts, I went for a plastic marine body from the RTB01box.
Since none of the heads were looking like I wanted, I opted for a plastic modern Space Wolf head (kindly donated by a generous belgian member) and opted for the full 80's way with the help of some putty. I wanted my Space pirate to be a mixture of all those icons below (I hope I'm not teaching you who they are) :

Lemmy Kilmister

Oh and I wanted some little RT reference just to add to the RT cred :

Rings a bell ? No ? Drunken pirates in powered armour ? Blokes drinking beer with their powered gloves ON ?

Yeah, I knew you'd get it.

Since the colour chosen by the community was turquoise, I seized the opportunity to get an old friend out of the closet :

I got that pot when it was released so that must be something like 21 years ago or so. The rest of the components were what you'd expect :

For the pose I knew I had to respect one detail :

RT601 space pirates (Taken from Solegend)
See how most pirates seem like old men with their bent back and their moustache ? Who am I to break the codes edicted by greater men than I'll ever be ?
So I had to make my pirate a hunchback with moustache.

With the vast amount of talent (and glue) that is mine, the bits turned into this :

Painting wise you can see I didn't opt for a true retro look. I never really do because it's not really a painting method I enjoy so I usually go for my usual mix of old and new techniques. This time I decided that a pirate in powered armour had to have worn out equipment instead of the well looked after kind you'd find in a marine chapter thanks to the techpriest and other space mecanics.
The turquoise does not look turquoise enough for me after all the weathering so I hope he'll look OK amongst the other entries.
I left the base untouched as it's part of the challenge rules so that the winner of the whole group can base them all in his favoured fashion (I'll base them all in my usual style, do not worry).

The poor guy doesn't even have any fireweapon left, he must have drunk it or gambled it, who knows ?
Good thing is, a boltgun is the kind of item you can easily get your hands on when you have some spare credits and a few connections...

Brannon Solo has lead a life of mercenary for years now, he barely remembers the girl he left behind and the 2 kids he granted her (or was it 3 ?). Anyway, getting his hands on a fully operational suit of powered armour in a bar fight (who started that one ?), Brannon started getting more jobs than he usually had. His bluntness combined with his very loose sense of self protection (encouraged by his suit) has made him honour nearly as much contracts as he has failed... (some bad mouths will tell you he gets his contracts because it's public knowledge half the time he forgets to ask his due because he's too drunk after the mission... but this is not the kind of place where such mean accusations get relayed sorry).

Brannon has NEARLY worked for Camilla Weis, the renowned Rogue trader...

"move one more step towards me and I'll shoot... the smell of your breath is an offense to the emperor himself..."
He's had relative success with women... of a certain kind...

"You know it's twice the price for drunkards like you so make your choice honey..."

He's made invaluable friends... friends so close he doesn't even have to ask their name...

"I'm feeling so friggin' great !"
And he enjoys the support of trustfull business partners after years of good service :

"50 credits for a power pack ! Emperor damnit !  D'ya want the death of me or what !"
Yep, you can tell the life of a space pirate is one worthy of stories and songs !

Now if you feel like winning this model and the others designed by talented and friendly folks, head to the Oldhammer forum and send your own entry !

  1. Damn fine work as per usual JB :)

Did you have fun separating his limbs from his body? It's quite a challenge with the old RTB01 guys to reattach them back together & them remaining in proportion.

Love the mullet! As soon as I saw it I thought to myself "Bryan Ansells' 80's hair style has now been immortalised" :D

With a highly amusing back story to boot, this guy ticks all the boxes.

    Well done JB.

    1. I won't lie, he was a sort of prototype for another project I have implying RTB01 beakies and yes, they're total bitches to reassemble... But I learnt in the process and wil soon be able to make plastic beakies STANDING UP.
I'm eager to see this guy along the other crew members and along your flamer holding alien ;)

    2. Not sure if you remember seeing my Silver Skulls that I did a while back, but I modified all their poses too. It's a lot of fun personalising them, but christ it's not as easy as it looks is it :)

      Here's a link to that blog post if your interested to see another mad person's endeavour;

This years pirate warband is shaping up to be a not too shabby affair.

      Cheers.

    3. Well I must have pissed that one but looking at yours, I'm rather impressed ! I've found that keeping the amrour parts intact makes the operation impossible so I've set to cut them and resculpt the edges to help.
The Standing one may not be the one with the most impressive pose at first sight but he's definitely the one (or one of those) on which you must have struggled most.

Be it in numbers or quality, this year's warband will be quite something indeed ;) glad I'm winning this one !

  2. Cracking figure JB! I really enjoy all the in-jokes and retro references you've incorporated into the figure - it elevates him much higher than a standard RTB01 marine. I think he's beautifully painted too...The weathering is perfect :)

    1. Well, I'm glad he turned out well in the end, he's really simple and I tried to experiment a bit on the weathering. I tried to refrain from overdoing him with KIL KIL KILs everywhere and too much colours. I hope he'll blend just right in amongst the others.

    1. Well I chose something in the vein but a little less evident. Maybe Brymmy Lembers Chaman would have worked too ^^

  5. Great stuff, Mr. ALMan! Terrific mini, but it is the pictures revealing his personal world that did it for me...especially the the happy buddy dance of the second to last photo! The Power Fist Stomp is going to be the newest dance craze to hit the underworlds of the Imperium!

    1. Yeah, every time I shoot such a scene it reminds me how desperatly I need some more terrain... but soon I promise ;), you gave me such a thirst for narrative pictures I'll have to fix that problem ASAP.

      Glad you love the guy.

  6. Lovely work, JB. Good to see you still have that Hawk Turquoise going. A cracking colour that I ran out of a while ago. What can be said about the weathered armour....other than first class!

    1. Cheers Ed, believe me the weathered armour is just the illusion of cheap tricks really !
I have to say I've nearly never used that pot in its entire lifetime, only using it for some gems when I was painting my 2nd ed eldars. It is a nice colour to work with in the end and the hue changes from my traditional cobalt blues, I'll add this string to my arrow (or whatever's the equivalent expression in english)
