Oriental adventurer for a Sensei band

And here comes a new follower for my sensei. His name is Moulay Abd An-nour and I really enjoyed  painting him and imagining a background for him. I see him as a scout used to rough environments which is why I painted him a pair of blue Jeans and a leather Jacket to give him a sort of traditionnal adventurer look. He has some very fancy weapons one of which being a shuriken pistol. I think it is a interesting weapon in terms of Background since it either means he got it from black-market or that he got it from an eldar (which I strongly think he did)

You may have noted that he has a rather dark skin compared to the other adventurers I painted earlier, well, I have to say that a lot of the inspiration for him has come from the scarf he's wearing on the head which I couldn't help but see as a Kefyeh :

It gave me the will to give him some oriental look because I think it looks good for a scout and I do not understand why in the 40th millenium all men should be white anglo-saxon protestants...
My sensei having travelled the galaxy and recruited his followers everywhere I felt normal for him to have some diversity in his retinue.

The traditionnal Kefyeh design didn't suit me though and would have been a pain in the ass to paint. Making regular checkers has been done a lot and I wanted something original so I came up with a really simple and easy design which I think looks good enough :

I practiced it on a sheet of paper and you can see here how it is built :

And now, the picture you wre all waiting for, the 4 members of the band so far. You can note that the band is smelling a little rough and virile for now. It is definitely time to add some charm and feminine manners to it. Next member should help fix that a bit...

    1. Cheers Jason, I like working on them a lot, a handful of god models, a good inspiration from the RoC books... what more could I ask for?

  2. Looking great JB. Lovely selection of figures - I bought this new guy myself only last week (having sold a copy previously). I can't wait to paint my copy.

    1. Thanks, there are so many good models to select from so it's a real pleasure. I'd love to see how you use yours (can't imagine you won't change a thing ;) )

  3. They're really taking shape nicely, JB. So much character in all of them. Keep that run of good form going. Can't wait to see what's up next.

    1. Thanks Edward! There are 3 more to do to finish this band and then I'll move on to another band with a different inspiration. Those really are great models to just enjoy painting really.

    2. Think I'm getting the bug now. That Ventolin Pirate may be getting an undercoat spray very soon. Dug out my old servitor as well. Also added rogue trader adventurers to my ebay search list. Watch this space!

  4. Between you and Whiskey Priest, I'm total fixated with RT and in particular this Sensei stuff at the moment. Actually wish I hadn't been on holiday in Wales this week, so that I could get some painting done!

The band is looking very good. Can't wait to kill them...whoops... I mean play against them at BOYL. ;-)

    1. Well a lot of us are doing RT at the moment and the emulation born from it is very healthy and let us explore all the wonders of this little slice of old 40k.
Be it to win or lose, I can't wait to play the lots of you myself ;)

    1. Thanks a lot! The cross design is a bit peculiar but I think it serves its purpose well in the end.

  6. You know, it's pretty rare to see these guys painted up, let alone painted up well!

You've done a fantastic job with them, giving each of them a fully fleshed out & believable backstory.

    Well done Asslessman :)

    1. Well not having many references of them is part of the charm really, it really helps me to throw my own ideas at them without being influencd by anything else. Glad you like the background too, I need a little back story to know who these guys are, when I have this little background, the painting comes naturally.

      Thanks a lot.

  7. This wonderful ganger fig is wonderfully brought to life, Mr. ALMan! Love the skin tone and kefyeh in particular. Although there is an upset Eldar pirate somewhere wondering about his missing shuriken pistol I believe...

    1. Thanks Private !
Regarding the shuriken pistol, I don't want to spoil the story but it is less about an upset pirate than about a female elder trader whose life has crossed the one of Moulay years ago...

    1. Well, coming from such a painter as yourself, it is a nice compliment ! I'm glad the headscarf design is appreciated as it is. I really wanted something that could remind traditional Keffyeh and lore modern design.

      Thanks a lot !

    1. You'll have to trust me on this one but it actually looked far much better before I made a huge line of pure white on the finished job because if my awkwardness. The repair work has been painful and disappointing but it still holds the same intention. Hopefully the group work makes the whole thing look good enough for the purpose.
      Thanks.

  10. Hey, you managed to make the difference here with that one! Haha, and all the story behind the mini and the caracter just adds so much charm! Delightful, absolutely delightful. :)

  11. He is one of my favourite but I always pushed him later due to the Keffyeh design I wanted to do. His background should be deepened as soon as he hits a table (which he might in little time actually !)
Thanks for the kind words Suber !

  14. Nice work, particularly on the keffyeh. The old figure is pretty well sculpted, and I like that he has a spare magazine for his shuriken pistol.
