Hey all ! So I've finally managed to start paintig villains for Blackstone Fortress ! Yeah !
I'm totally nowhere near being able to play with fully painted models for now but that's still one step closer so I'm more than fine. To get the juices flowing, I thought I'd start with a group I could do real fast and with little hassle so I picked the Ur-ghuls.
The Ur-ghuls are somehow running the same thread as the genestealer, deformed alien humanoids with a tendency to hunt humans for food but leaning towards Pan's labyrinth's pale man rather than Giger's Xenomorph. A fantastically unfriendly creature.
Painting had to be fast and rewarding so I started on a wraithbone contrast undercoat and first threw a wash of Drakenhof nightshade with Agrax eathshade and medium (2/1/2) all over and while the washes were still drying, went to blend more drakenhof nightshade on the forearms and calves, following that I gave the hands and feet a wash of nuln oil and then glazed the tip of the feet and fingers with Nuln oil again to create a cool gradient.
I knew I didn't want an even colour skin or they would have looked too dull and I like the idea of having the limbs dark to both convey the horrors on their hands and a form of strengthened skin (one piece readers will know what I mean).
I then just picked some parts with a glaze of crimson carroburgh, rasied a few edges with a gentle drybrush and I was good. No competition winner but all 4 done in under an hour and a real sense of achievement so exactly what I wanted to be honest !

I think those small groups of villains are reall well sized to provide a good mojo boost between more demanding figures like the characters.
I'm having real difficulties with the Aeldary ranger at the moment but I'll get through it I swear, I'm making good progress on several fronts so painting really is in a happy place for me at the moment !

Love the color scheme here ... the base color makes a brilliant counterpoint to the figurine colors.

I have had some ghouls sprayed and based since early 2020. I'm going to give this method a try.

DeleteWOrking with washes is often rewarding for the models that enable it, the process is fun and the results show very rapidly.
Great work. I think they look suitably menacing like they just leapt from the darkness. Very impressed that this was done in an hour. Need to learn some of these tips.

DeleteSeeing your work on these has made me take Blackstone Fortress tentatively out of the "to sell" pile. I really like your colour combo.
ReplyDelete44 models however good and inspiring they might be is still a big chunk to paint and I've sat on the box for way long enough to know it, I've lately realised how approaching it in small bites is actually very pleasant and rewarding and can be the occasion to try new things. I think filler villains can also be painted to a lesser level which can mean less pressure and being positively surprised by the result, that pleasure is key I reckon.

Truly elegant work. I love the slight blush around the knees and cheeks. It's touches like that are what make a miniature truly come alive.

J'ai toujours trouvé ces figs très dérangeantes dans leur aspect... Je pense peindre les miens en chair rosée humaine, comme si c'étaient des monstruosités mutées à partir d'une souche humaine XD

Merci, je voulais un côté alien pour simuler la peau d'acier et ne pas partir sur le labyrinthe de Pan, je pense que ke traitement plus humain oeut être encore plus flippant je suis curieux de voir çà !
