OK so this is orctober right ? And what do we do on orctober ? Celebrate my birthday and prepare for halloween right but more importantly ? ORCTOBER YEAH.
Like every year, I do like to paint something for the occasion and this year I had 2contenders. Lopedog decided for me though by sending me a gretchin pilot for my dreasdnought though, what an asshole right ? urgh...
Anyway, I knew I didn't want that to spoil me the fun of painting something big and noisy hence very orky : a dreadnought.

Now of course the Rogue Trader ork Dreadnought is an absolute beauty of non sense and goofy charm. I do like smaller versions and never got a banner pole but I could see myself adding two little friends to this guy now...

Funnily enough, painting mine according to my usual colour scheme makes it visually close to the iconic Bad Moons version by Tim Prow !
The joints and weird angles mean it's not an easy model to give a dynamic pose to but I tried by making it walk and twisted the middle section with the arms attached to it (I've decided that part can turn around because it's cool).
Midway through blocking colours on this guy, I still wasn't sure about the colour balance and it took the whole scheme based with darker colours added to realise I liked it and it suited with my idea ^^'
Like often, showing WIP shots to my friends helped me realising there was a drastic lack of banners on my murderbot. And of course you don't want a weak and petty fabric banner for such a triumph of ork technology, you want a STEEL BANNER (as in plastic card steel) !!!
For the design I just wanted to say something really meaningful so placed a giant red star to echo my clan's logo and added the words "GOG KAN" because it is a powerful dreadnought after all !

Now the really good part of this all (I guess) is that it also stops my ork force from being a full trooper force but it now has a vehicle, taking it a step closer to being some bit of an army (although a proper army is probably never going to happen).
Now I'll be totally honest with you here, I have no idea how it fares on a tabletop and 2 chaos dreads are probably a bit of a dick move but I do have " painted RT dreadnoughts after all !
I'm in a robot mood right now, and in old cars as well, but that's another project... again !

I agree, the model is charming and I most definitely prefer this kind of design over the rough and sharp edges in new Dreads. But wow, your paintjob makes it stand out, and the steel banner is a total win! Dammit, this is so cool!

DeleteYeah, just to echo Suber's points, this is a real winner. It's really difficult to pull of dirty yellow, but you've done it masterfully.
DeleteMy brother's ork army used to stomp all over my poor guard with a pair of these dreads, and it's lovely to see a classic given such a great paintjob.
I'd definitely struggle with a clean bright yellow, but a dirty one is easy enough if you go light handed first, I also start from real desaturated yellows that I liven up with glazes afterwards (the WIP picture shows the yellow just after glazing) that's how I find the balance but that's because for this project I want a real vibrant and rich yellow.

DeleteThat's what came to my mind when seeing this. There's a stablished look for RT minis and general consensus, wider audience wise, that RT minis are crap compared to nowadays but with the proper paintjob they stand great against newer models.
DeleteIMHO modern techniques like weathering and that orangey rust wash give the model dignity it deserves.

The trick is to use real thin plastic card for the glyphs since it makes the cutting way easier.

DeleteTop notch! It's a great combination of vibrant old school colours and gritty modern realism. The grot pilot looks suitably weedy and haggard, and that banner is of course the cherry on the cake!

You want a fabric banner that can dramatically flap in the wind and look epic! A fabric banner that will billow in slow motion and make all the Orks feel inspired. A fabric flag that bullets that are too high to spang off the hull can punch through inconsequentially and give the pilot a feeling of ruggedness. With grease stains on the bottom where the pilot's wiped the oil and amnitoic fluid off his fingers mid-battle.
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely polishing of an absolutely horrendous minaiture. It's one of the really fascinating Rogue Trader kits, like the Landspeeder and Imperial Robots, that was designed before the sculptors had established the conventions for sculpting 40K vehicles, and so it's full of "early episode weirdness", to borrow a TVTropes term.
Really well judged colour placements on the panels. You've made it look really solid and mechanical but still bright and visually interesting.

DeleteNow as much as your points are valid and I agree with you, a steel banner makes a MUCH funnier sound which surely pleases the pilot and orks around who giggle everytime they hear it.

DeleteI think I want a vehicle now, although I always considered this would be a skirmish force exclusively, it's getting to a point where a transport would be cool I reckon ^^. Treat yourself with an egg dread, they're pretty fun to paint !

ReplyDeleteBen le design de base est assez débile on va dire mais dans le genre des vieux jeux vidéo ou des dessins animés du samedi matin et avec un traitement un peu plus réaliste (dans une certaine mesure hein ?) je trouve qu'il le fait bien au final ! J'aime bien les suivants mais celui là avec ses formes arrondies colle mieux au groupe je trouve. ^^
