If Space is the final frontier, then someone better guard it well ! After painting a tyrannid and Eldar fleet, I had to paint the last remaining faction for this jewel of old school gaming that Space Fleet is.
I won't bore you (again) with what Space Fleet is but if you're still wondering, hen you can check these posts to get a better understanding.
Now, I've been collecting Imperial space ships for a while and I've known I would have more of them than the rest right from the start (they were more available and there's a bigger choice. I had to come up with a plan.
Well it was pretty simple honestly, I just decided to split the fleet in 2 and make them compatible to either use the whole as a gigantic force OR make both face one another making sure both fleets wee the same size.
So this is the first half AKA "the red force".
To pick which models I would get in the red force, the choice was quite simple, I picked all the models that had been given to me because if my fondness for Space Fleet and completed to 760 points with others I had bought.
First part though consisted in filling the gaps on those babies...
Well, as much as I love those models, this was NOT an easy nor pleasant task. The width of the upper parts and lower parts is just different so making them fit is almost impossible without cursing and using a lot of putty...
Next issue was that I had ordered VERY cheap flying bases... VERY cheap flying bases have one advantage : they're VERY cheap :
... and a bit shitty yes. |
Now here are individual shots. I'd like to be honest here, The paintjobs are not as good as I would have loved BUT I made myself the promise to have the fleet with all the ships that had been kindly donated to me done for this summer's Oldhammer event. So with very little time (due to poor planning from my part) I did take necessary shortcuts to meet the deadline.
I won't go too much into the details of the rules since I already covered that previously HERE.
Now here's the Emperor capitol ship, mightest ship of the fleet, and a fat sculpt to put atop a plastic rod if you ask me but it does look like what it's meant to be. A strong and offensive flag ship for the whole fleet.
The dominator battleship is without a surprise the one shooting explosive shells from a distance, not exactly a sniper, more of a mortar.
The ironclad is interesting sinc eit's supposed to date back from before the crusades and it's therefore not protected with shields like most other ships but with armour, that's why thisone is the only ship with actual battle damage.
The Gothic battleship is of course the most iconic ship since it's on and in the box
The thunderbolt cruisers are splendid sculpts with a rear engine twice as big as the one on bigger ships, I painted it glowing with energy and I really like how these look fast.
The firestorm looks and actually is just a smaller Gothic Battleship :
Not sure how and if the constellation targeting ship is going to be useful but that an interesting model with a different design.
Then you have the light weights with the cobra destroyers which look like eneven tinier versions of the Gothic battleship (aren't they cute !)
So here we are, that's 13 more ships who'll most likely will see some action at the end of the month in Newark !
Now my attention is set on BOYL (the oldhammer event in Newark) at the end of the month so I will very unlikely have anything more to show or tell since then... You can expect full reports of the games I'll play, models I'll see (and get) and other things like that to share it with you all.
I wish you all fantastic summer (or winter if you live in another hemisphere than I do) holidays !
That's a fine looking fleet! With the red paintwork and racing stripes, they look like a phallic group of sports cars. The Imperium really is trying to make an unsubtle statement to those xenos fleets :)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing these in action!
With the Nids being covered in sphincters and Vulvas, I'm afraid it's even past innuendos...
DeleteThey'll all look cool doing... whatever they're going to do !
Thanks !
Penetrate deep into the Tryanid fleet, spurting out waves of torpedoes...
DeleteOh, I see what you mean.
You'll be able to tell the Space Fleet players apart from the rest, they will be the ones blushing or displaying a disturbingly naughty look...
DeleteVery cool. I really have a fondness for the older designs of the Imperial fleet. Except for the one with the claws, that one looked silly.
ReplyDeleteThat one will be in the second fleet and yes it's an absolutely bonkers design... we'll see how it works !
DeleteThanks !
A+ Nico
They're very good for such a quick paint job!
ReplyDeleteDrybrushing can sometimes lead to very decent results !
DeleteLovely stuff. Red really suites these. I think the Constellation comes from a line of ships (design wise at least) from the early days of GW - pre Space Fleet. I'd like to collect a force of these to use in Space Fleet at some point.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, a lot of the sculpts were repurposed from Star Cruisers or other ranges :

That's a great looking fleet, congratulations. Honestly i'm surprised you took plastic flying stands. i remember those ships to be H-E-A-V-Y so i would fear to see them break their stands at first outing ^^
ReplyDeleteSure hope it won't happen. Oh and Cobras are indeed super-cute!
Can't wait to read about their outing in Albion island, wish you a great time.
Thanks you so much mec and sorry for waiting so long ! I'll do you proud with him by ramming as many foes as I can !
DeleteThese take me back a few years. Nice paint jobs.
ReplyDeleteSame for me, although I cannot stop altering old models and painting them in more modern ways , those old ships are completely nostalgic nuggets for me.
DeleteThanks !
Terrific. Red make them stand out and look impressive. A real tribute to the Red Era :D
ReplyDeleteWell those were from far earlier but I reckon you can hardly make more red than this !
DeleteVery nice indeed. A very cool and esoteric project with some interesting models.
ReplyDeleteWell I really hope the games we'll play this summer will grab people's interest, I'd love to see more Space Fleet around !
DeleteThanks !
They look brilliant. Hopefully see you at BOYL,
ReplyDeleteCan hardly wait to get there, counting days ! ^^
DeleteAlways loved these old models. Some of them are much better than their BFG counterparts. Seing them in action should be lovely next to your Eldar and Nids paintjobs !
ReplyDeleteBFG designs really lacked something grimdark or gothic a bit like Epic40k did I reckon, it was too vanilla gard sci-fi to me. I was also not very keen (that's an understatement)of Dave Andrew's sculpts...
DeleteWe should have some great tables with plenty of models this summer, can't wait !
I have a fondness for those old ship designs!
ReplyDeleteSo do I, despite some being from older ranges, I actually like the mismatching and the more "gothic" ones really convey the feeling of weight, mass and power. Brilliant stuff.
DeleteThanks a lot Tony !
Corking. Love how so many of the design elements of the Emperor make it through to the later BFG range – the prows, the rams. Love to see a photo of the two versions of the Emperor alongside each other.
ReplyDeleteYou fired out the paintjobs on these enviously quick.
Interesting to see how they kept those instead of the real unique gothic ones. Those prows really remind me of old warships (just reinforcing the whole Space is an ocean theme).
DeleteI'm happy the rushing mode provided results !
That's a good looking fleet, really like your colour choice
ReplyDeleteCheers, I wanted a simple colour for each fleet to make forces easily identifiable. It gives a good group effect.
DeleteThanks !
These are really small so great job!
ReplyDeleteMost are bigger than your average 28mm scaled human though. ^^
DeleteThanks !
