What does any self respecting undead force need ? Come on... Skeletons yes ! So for Valentine's day, I had to paint a couple...
As you might have noticed, the force was pretty meaty and was somehow lacking "dry" elements... Well the only way to do things is to do them right isn't it ? I had to get a few skeletons in the troup and I had the perfect models for it !
I got those skeletons from Vialudibunda who produces plenty of lovable models, especially if you're into pirates and oldschool stuff. These were sculpted by Tim Prow and are absolutely charming.

Get them from HERE |
I've only stuck to 2 of them but I intend to paint the last 4 in a while since they could be used as a Dragon Rampant unit.
For now, I'm trying to focus on what I need to play this band for Mordheim and Frostgrave.
Painting wise, the choice of colours was pretty simple and I just stuck with the palette I used for the others. In hindsight, I could have muddied those shirts and clothes a little and I'll probabbly get back to them.
All in all, I'm quite happy with how the band is turning with 13 members now ! The thing I'm th emost satisfied with is that the models do look coherent together (to me at least), which was my main concern at the start.
Happy painting gaming and loving to you all !
Nice, neat and perfect ! Love the names ;)
ReplyDeleteGlad you noticed the names ^^
DeleteThanks mec !
They really are coming together as a 'lovely' little force. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteKnowing they're getting their Mordheim campaign in a couple of months does help. ;)
DeleteCheers mate !
They're the least pirate looking but all are great sculpts to be honest. I'm trying to avoid painting more than 2-3 models at a time to keep the energy flowing with this band but I'll come back to those for sure.
ReplyDeleteThanks !
These look great, and the warband overall is fantastic
ReplyDeleteWell thank you !
DeleteCracking pair mate, really nicely done - they fit beautifully with the rest of the group :-)
ReplyDeleteCheers, it's a fun warband to work on really, all the models have their special vibe and they form a pleasant group.
DeleteExcellent warband! Bravo. Oh, and plenty of kisses too!
ReplyDeleteAw, you charmer !
DeleteExcellent work! I like your bones work; on the white side without being shiny white, it's very well done.
ReplyDeleteHonetsly, they turned out more white than I wanted at first, had to get them back from the shiny side with stone grey glazes but they still look too bright. It makes them stand from the others a bit though so not a bad thing I guess.
DeleteThanks mec !
Never knew this mini range existed JB. They look the goods though don't they!
ReplyDeleteI really fancy them, loads of character which is quite rare for skeletons I reckon.
DeleteIt's true! You don't often see skeletons with panache outside a Sam Raimi film ;)
DeleteWell, I do have Evil Ash in the band already so there's a standard set. ^^
DeleteHmm good point...
DeleteGreat models, I haven't seen them before. Nice painting too ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks, you don't see much painted but they're a lovely bunch for sure.
DeleteGreat looking figures with outstanding paint jobs. Do you vanish seal your minis to protect them?
ReplyDeleteCheers, yes I do, I use W&N galeria Matt varnish by brush. I don't like like varnishing much but it's a necessary evil since I play with most of my models. I've got back to varnishing with a brush after 2 accidents with sprays and kids at hime making airbrushing a no go.
DeleteThat red ties them all together so nicely. A splendid looking warband mate.
ReplyDeleteWhat's your recipe for painting those off-white shirts?
Cheers ! The off white is basically :
Delete- base colour of stone grey from PA (it's a little greenish but it's got a perfect coverage and is ideal to start white I find), then a sepia wash, highlights with stone grey again, aother with stone grey mixed with white and then diluted white pulled across the edges.
So great! You made them look perfectly coherent and integrated in the group!
ReplyDeleteI also got tohose ages ago, still part of my Lead Mountain of Shame :(
Well, isn't the lead mountain of shame bound to become the future heights of Glory ? ^^
DeleteThanks man.
Most excellent work JB. You're right - they hang together very well! Will you be coming to BOYL. I'd love to have an undead versus undead Mordheim showdown!
ReplyDeleteBoyl is 95% sure for me this year, I'm missing you folks a bit !
DeleteThe time table will be tight but the idea of a MH game has a nice appeal I must say. ^^
I love 'em! It's nice to see that clean, whitish bone colour instead of the yellow/browns that are so popular. Best names for 2 skeleton buddies too. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteTo be perfectly honest, I had to glaze the skull back to something less white than what it was and I'd like them better a tad darker, not much, just a tone under. I was considering weathering them a bit to avoid making them stand from the rest so much.
DeleteSo glad you got the name too. ^^
Cool stuff JB! I like how the warbands are focusing your painting. Imight have to try that trick.
ReplyDeleteThose warbands painted as I go mean I only paint models I want to paint and that after the first couple of models, I know the colours well enough not to worry about the technique. It's very refreshing and prfect to build mojo in my view.
DeleteA very Grim Fandango'ish addition to your collection. ;)
ReplyDeleteIn the unlikely event you are unaware what Grim Fandango is ... it's a old adventure pc game I played and one of the first I actually played with the missus.
I knew Grim Fandango and it's true there's a bit of that and Monkey island in them !
DeleteThe clean white on the bone and the warmer "bone" white on the shirt etc is a risky proposition, one that I would certainly not try.
ReplyDeleteBut it works brilliantly :)
I did hesitate before doing it, I'm wary of "tone on tone" but lining helped here.
