The underhive baller

Hey all !

Another model done and like many of teh last, it's a Colony 87 one from the first wave released last year. I've been quite balanced as to how to paint this one, it's nearly been an ash waste nomad, a desert trader or even a humble merchant but nothing was exactly capturing my attention. When I got back to the model to start it as a stand alone, things got a bit clearer !

The big hat somehow screamd to me to be painted red, (maybe because of that huge jewel on top or because of the extravagant size of it). Come one, I'm sure you thought about it too :

Not exactly the kind of character I really fancy but if the undrhive is filled with punks, hookers and junkies, there's most probably people taking the charge of supplying all those needs... That's how I ended up painting that huge hat red along some other details and I decided to treat the trousers as gaters to go a little further.
I think those elements were just enough to give the vibe I wanted to teh charecter without having to paint the model in outrageous colours and panther fur...

The supplies in his back and front pockets are most probably drugs of all kinds he can sell to those with enough credits to afford them. I find quite funny to see how the cane can make a difference, if I had painted it black or something neutral, the model would have been a perfect gentle trader. Painted iron with blood splatters... the guy become something else !

I'm eager to make this guy a scenaristic element for future games of Rogue Trader or Confrontation, either as a target for a rival group or as a supplier of illegal goods, there's unfortunately no shortage of work for such guys...

Febuary hasn't been a very productive month painting wise but I do hope to get a couple of things done soon enough to make you folks forgive me ;)

EDIT : OH and if you love that model, why don't you go check the excellent and different version from Preacher by day :

  1. Nice take on the miniature. The hat is for sure very big. I like the street dealer you've emphasized in him. The rod sure makes a great difference. Just like you I think he'll play a perfect role on the table for a future game :)

    1. Cheers mec !
Just a few details to achieve a different look, I like it better than going OTT for nothing.

  2. That is brilliant! Not something I would have thought of at all, but it works well. Funny thing, I just finished painting this guy yesterday! I'll have to pop him up on the blog. Mine's not half as flamboyant as yours, though.

    1. Oh, looking forward to seeing yours, I have to say it painte ditself like most of the figures of the range. it's true I've opted for a familiar palette of mine but I had to pick an idea amongst the many available !

  3. Another super interpretation mate - I though apothocary when I painted mine, and you went full pimp! Just goes to show how versatile the C'87 minis are :-)

  4. That's awesome! I quite like the big jewel on the hat, nice colour. You'd expect this type of interpretation from a frenchman! ;-)

  6. I'm pretty locked into the idea of a nomadic desert trader, but you've spun my head round with his red hat. Amazing how you can shift the concept with unexpected colour choices. Lovely stuff!!

    1. Believe me, he was going to be a nomadic trader for sure until very little time before I started, those things just happen !

  7. Lovely job mate. Definitely like how he's a pimp/pusher in your world. He'll need some muscle for protection stood behind him on the streets though if he's to be taken seriously.

    1. You're absolutely right, the man needs some toughies around him (or for whatever other villain I'll come up with). Back to the desk !
      Thanks ;)

  8. The blue kinda dials down the pimp-factor of the mini ... in a good way of course. :)

    1. When I decided to go the way I did, I thought I couldn't go the all eccentric way or it would look odd so I tried to only place a few elements to suggest more than saying in broad capital letters. The vest and hat are also in bright colours because they're additions while the the rest of the clothes under have far more humble tones to suggest how the character built himself.
      Thanks a lot !

  9. Interesting take on him. I've got mine a little less than half painted. I was pairing him with the jerry can guy. I'm very excited for wave 2. Plonked down my pledge this afternoon.
