Colony 87 Recordist

Alright, here's another painted model from the excellent Colony 87 by Jon/Axiom that's coming our way in Febuary ! After having dealt with the working forces, let's have a go at those who study ! This model like the ones before was designed by Will beck (see sketch below) and sculpted by Michael Anderson.

I think this model is really cool as you can find plenty of uses for that kind of scientific/searcher/ administrative kind. I like that he's equipped with all sorts of devices for which you have absolutely no idea what the possible use might be ! The only device that might make sense is actually the recording device in his hands ! He probably needs the headlight to explore archives and old libraries, who knows !

Painting wise, I was going to go for a full red suit but it looked too militaristic and strict. Breaking the suit between arms and body makes him look a bit taller and straighter and it allows to have a little more colours and therefor life without painting his gear a fancy colour (something I can't do it seems).

Once again I was amazed by the sculpting which is excellent, especially since this model is a resin master, meaning some areas are accessible beyond what could be done on a production model (I could actually paint BEHIND the optic device in front of the left eye...

So this is the 3rd model of the range, meaning I'm halfway through the range. Since I've actually painted 3 models of the first wave I'm actually at 50% of the whole brand (I know it's silly but that's the sort of silly achievements we painters like, you'll reckon). I'm well advanced on the last 3 of this 2nd wave and fully intend to get my 1st wave finished as well now !

Just look at how our poor Lord Sergei seems delighted by his appointment with his recordist who's about to kill him with stats and all sorts of horrible stuff...

And see how Dean Viesel is acting nervously and showing off around the recordist ! I just love that quiet and determined expression on that guy !

Next on the leadplague ? I have no idea, well, more Colony 87 is definitely possible but there are a couple of things which could get a slap of paint in a flash... I can't tell, I swear...

    1. He's got an excellent face that one I reckon, and the pose is just right. Doesn't take more than this to have an effective model actually !

  3. Nice one JB, he's my favourite so far! You are a lucky sod getting your hands on the masters, can't wait for the KS! :-)

    1. The counterpart is I have little time to paint them before the KS but I'd be one big fool to complain painting those beauties really !
Even I can get lucky sometimes ;)

  4. I really like this one. So much character in an otherwise simple sculpt. The face really makes it for me and matches the artwork very closely.

    1. I fully agree, the face and the simple pose combine to convey a really precise vibe to this guy. Sometimes going a little OTT is an easy way for artists to give a message (especially these days) but sometimes, just making things "right" is the way to go.

  5. I think your choices here are great, colourwise. The model to me has a strong 'Ghost in the Shell' vibe, the bright coated lab technician working through some android maintenance logs looking for the vital information about the fatal malfunction... he is definitely a handy model for some narrative exploits :D

    1. Well, you and I come from the same place you know... even if we don't, but still we do. And I think he'll be particularly handy just as you mention. ;)

    1. I'd like to see him record the demolition and damage caused by Hammeroid and his mates (Tim Tim and all), that could be fun ;)
      Cheers buddy.

  7. He's lovely! The strong red is not a colour I would have considered, but it looks great, especially with the two-tone tabard.

I suspect those little helmet doodads are for transmitting and receiving data. Or something ;)

    1. THer emust be some transmitting device for sure but I like that there's a whole array of device on him you don't know the exact use of. That sets the model in a nother time and place and yet you can immediately identify what kind of guy he is. Clever design really.

  9. He perfectly fits the quiet savant as well as the boring accoutant roles. Another great piece which would add a great piece of depth and story to any table. The sculpt seems quite fine too.

  11. I have mentioned before I'm a huge fan of pastel/subdued-like colour schemes and yours are on a whole different level of awesome. I love your work and yours together with fellow blogger Finch's are my de facto standards to reach if I'm to call myself a miniature painter of good repute. Awesome awesome stuff.

    1. Wow mate ! I really think my skills aren't up to your words or to your skills even but thanks you so much for the praise ! I'm still too messy and taking too many shortcuts but at least I know where I can improve, over the last 3 years, I've painted more than I had ever painted before and my painting has evolved in the process.
Tanks again mate, a little pat on the back always helps ! ^^

  12. Love these miniatures. I missed the kickstarter, is there anyway to get hold of some? Sorry if its been mentioned before somewhere. I've been trying to track down where to get hold of them.

    1. No problem, these will be released as the 2nd wave Kickstarter due for the end of Febuary. The models from the first wave will also be available during that Kickstarter so have no fear.
I'll advertise about the future range and teh KS and you can (dare I say should) also check Jon/Axiom's bog (he' the brains behind all that) :
