Apprentice and Wizard from Asgard !

Just a few days after finishing my wizard for Frostgrave/mordheim/WHFB, I realised I should strike the iron while hot and get my apprentice done in order to have the leading group finished.
This model is still from the exact same set as his predecessor and still from the excellent Jes Goodwin but he's sort of the only one of a kind in the group.

While most his fellow barbarians have some sort of light armour and protections, this one is nearly naked with just a pelt over his head and a loin cloth to hide his jewels. The vast amount of skin and the little cloth he wears meant I had little room to add blue on him and tie him with the rest of the group. Woad patterns have been suggested for the wizard and on this one I realised it was inevitable. Since I wanted the painting on this group to be minimalist and quick, I didn't go for complicated designs and just drew lines and spirals :

"Skai has always revered his uncle Roldor, admiring his combined strength and wisdom. Like his uncle, he's kept a very close link with nature but not having anyone to help him deciphering the wiriings in the books he opted for a more empiric approach to sorcery, trying to bond with the forces of nature. When he got to the age to become the shaman for the village, he asked for a period to go explore the world and build enough wisdom to be of help. The leaders of the village took that for a sign of maturity... but it was just a desperate attempt for Skai to see his Uncle again, tales and whispers eventually lead him to him and he knew he could finish his training with the best of masters in order to come back to his people as a real master himself..."

While I was at it I decided I could add some tattoos on the wizard himself to show his bond with his helper. I quite like the indistinct pagan look halfway between native americans and gauls. I realise as I post the photos show the skin a little yellowish and doesn't show all the highlights (even though they're minimal) and the contrast I've given them to make them good on a tabletop...

Next on Leadplague : Some workers from the future, can't say more than that but some pretty cool stuff believe me ;)

    1. Cheers, it's all quick work to save time but I try to make things effective ! The skintones lose a little with photography but one day I'll learn !
      Thanks ;)

    2. All colours lose a little with photography, I find. Nothing like seeing someone's work "in the flesh" to realize just how good it is.

    3. so true, some people are actually scarier when you see their models in real ^^

  2. Brilliant! He's got a real brooding look. The body paint is subtle - very restrained, but sufficient to give a nice visual addition.

    Lovely.

    1. Cheers, I hope he won't be lost amongst all the others once they're done, I've given him ginger hair to make him stand a little more so we'll see, no reason to cry before it hurts.

      thanks !

    1. Well, it's nice but they look a bit differently IRL, they're a little less yellow and not as smooth but it's a rapid method that make me paint those quick so that's all good !

      Cheers ;)

    1. to be honest, they are really good for their cost, casts aren't exactly perfect ( I suspect old moulds) but the sculpt is Goodwin goodness and therefore straightforward and so pleasant !

      Cheers

  6. A great partner for your wizard and the gentle woad is a great addition. Simple lines are more tribal than otherwise and therefore all too appropriate to these sculpts. Bravo!

    1. I agree, I wanted something brush friendly but also not to intricate to keep that simple look to them.
      Glad you like !

  7. JB I am really liking where this is going. The new tats on the wizard are great. I will second as well these skin tones are really different but enjoyable. As for the apprentice himself a great figure with an even better paint job. Well done you have really brought the fierceness of this guy alive.

    1. Cheers Bud ! It's highly motivating to see you like them as well. Since the models are not flawless, I've opted for the quick and easy way but still, they keep that Goodwin charm. I was wondering if the colour schemes is not too restricted but it seems OK so far. I can always change a few things with the other guys, I've already done 20% of them in under a week!

  8. They really are quality sculpts. Great facial expressions. Missed the first dude; probably down to the fact we're moving house again. Loving the subtle body paint as well. Nice work, JB.

  9. Tattoos are a great touch. Love it. Spot on with the skin tone based on his hair colour.
I'm planning an elaborate tattoo on a 80-mm piece but that is still far into the future.

    1. Cheers, 80mm is one large scale, very little in common to 28mm I guess !

  10. Another great addition, your warband will surely be a sight not to miss amidst the ruins of Frostgrave. You also really managed to link both the master and the apprentice, which is great. Well done !

    1. Those sculpts are probably more than 30 years old if you think about it and yet they still do the job ! To be honest, the paintjobs are minimal (2 hours each) since the castings aren't perfect, I do not want to refin things too much and prefer to keep a spontaneous approach to them.
What I love about tha trange is that not 2 models have the same look and yet they have a little something tha bonds them !

  12. Cool, cool work, as usual. But I'm thinking right now... Real Barbarians don't rely on this magic stuff, they just ask Crom to grant them victory! :D

    1. You don't ask Crom for Victory, you offre it to him ! Anyway... I think those missed a few lessons and are of a special kind of barbarians ! ;)
