Champions of Law : Lord Aquila and elf

Another sunday past and some more reinforcements for my Realm of Law warband ! (greatly helped by me beeing sick and staying at home all WE...)
I'm adding 2 new members for the warband and this time I think the style evolves a bit. they are not chaotic as some of the others but both of them have been sculpted by the talented Jes Goodwin.
First on the left is Lord Aquila from the Heroic fighters of known world set :

Picture taken from Solegend

I didn't have to get too far from the original paintjob as you see but my colour choice was only driven by the palette used on the others. One thing you can note is the Tyr rune which supposedly represents Law on Ulrik's shield...

Picture taken from Solegend
You can also bote the paintjobs (both the original and mine) match the illustration from John Blanche so I guess everything here !
I thought this model could represent a good leader for the warband as it is quite a tall model and it definitely has a noble aura compared to the more ruthless warriors of the group. The style is a bot different so it might prove like a combo breaker, not sure here.
The second recruit is a menilbonean archer from the eternal champion range later repurposed as a high elf and also sculpted by Jes Goodwin (that's 5 models out of 6 sculpted by him in the warband).

I wanted to have an elf in teh group and those were a godsned being sculpted by Jes and with just the right style with fur and armour !
Painting wise, there's not much to say apart from the fact that Lord Aquila wasn't th emost friendly model to paint due to a lot of textures (scale mail and very heavy fur). That said, it still was an easy and rapid paintjob as i'm getting used to paint them now.
You can note I used the red on the arrow feathers just because I didn't want to use another colour and because people will have the liberty to wonder which side the one you can find in the dwarf's beard came from...

Here's the group shot which says if this still works or not. I'm honestly finding it still does but that I wouldn't dare go any further than this in terms of model selection, I might use some more chaotic model in the future or whatever but a couple of the Heroic fighters I was thinking about using will probably not make it as previously imagined.

I'm super glad to have reach 6 models for this warband because it means the next is the 7th and 7th means it's special. Don't know which model it's gonna be but I've decided that 7th and 13the (if there ever is a 13th) have to be special. Just because.

  1. Lord Aquila is a great miniature both sculpt and paint-wise. While I have to confess that the Menilbonean range never caught my eye, your painting makes him look interesting. Nice little band you have here :)

    1. Lord Aquila is not the easiest of sculpts as its scale mail and fur are not making things easuy for the painter (the fur being different from traditionnal Goodwin fur). That said it does have that charm required.

      Cheers.

  2. I'm sure you realise that the Melnibonean is also a chaos figure (Melniboneans being worshippers of chaos and thoroughly self-centred and depraved to boot)!

He's a great addition, as the armour styling is unlike anything else Citadel used for their following elf lines (apart from the pointy helmet).

Lord Aquila does have a different look to the chaos models, but that doesn't detract from him in my mind - there's enough visual cues from the painting to sit him very firmly in with the rest.

    Nice job!

    1. Of course I know my classics, it's just the range is not associated with RoC chaos but more with the late HIgh elf range (in my view, being a little younger) it's why the menilbonean range seemd like th ebest to field an elf in such a band and I do not regert my choice here.
Aquila looks fine to me, he seems more level headed and in a commanding role than the othe rones which is fine. I'm not usr eI'll add the moonduke or Sir Brut though (which I have) and will consider getting a Gladius when I've added a couple more models.

      Cheers !

  3. While racking my feeble brains trying to think of good models for your warband, it never occurred to me to look at the Melniboneans - fortunately you are far more in tune with the universe of Law, as demonstrated by your neat and useable workspace and ability to not only finish projects, but also varnish them, sealing their form as the Law gods require. I'm only just able to put a functional base on my models, such is my commitment-phobia...

    I'm looking forward to lucky 7! :D

    1. Very nice of you to say so but none of these have been varnished so far and this will prove to be a problem soon as I prime in AP grey which would be the best prime I know if it wasn't for its very weak adherence when not sealed...
To be honest the menilboneans were HIgh elves to me before Jon brought my attention on them and made me realise the models had had a past when he collected the range. ^^'

  4. I love their fur cloaks, JB. Good use of the Melnibonean fig. Have a few myself but have never found a use for them as yet. Gladius will make an excellent addition to this Goodwinesque band.

    1. Gladius is the most bordeline of the group and his original paintjob is not that far from what I'd do with him so I guess he could work. I have some more "bizarre" entries planned though so ow I have more models, selection will have to be done with a little more care !

      Thanks Ed.

  5. A lovely looking lawful warband - the choice of Goodwin models combined with your lovely painting works a treat and for me it's that pale, glowing blue that makes them fit your brief. Seven is indeed a special number - would love to see a Nurgle model given the lawful treatment... (I'm confident you have the talent to make that possible!)

    1. Cheers Stuart !
Keeping the same sculptor and model from teh same era must have helped with teh dwarf being the only odd of the group so far. Now a Nurge model ? Well too bad I've already painted all the ones I had ! Some would have been easier than others though, th eheavily mutate dones would unlikely be credible as Lawful without any conversion but sword 2 woul dbe a winner I'm sure !

  6. Hah, I knew it! A Melnobonean by Jes Goodwin would look awesome in this warband and give it an additional dynamic!
Missed the post where the dwarf was added but he's also looking good.
For the 7th member, why not an Ogre (also by Goodwin)? I'd venture to sugest that Skragg or Hrthyogg would fit the bill, especyally Hrthyogg as he has a more "disciplined" pose (complementing Aquila as a kind of "second-in-comand").

    1. I've already painted him : http://leadplague.blogspot.fr/2013/11/the-finishing-blow.html
But it's true he could have looked good !
I think I'll have to exploire the beastmen, wizards and demons at some point now. I just can't paint Skagg as anything else than the Malal worshipper he is can I ?
      Thanks a lot !

    2. Uh, actually, you can. Non-adherence to canon is the basis of what we do, innit...? ;-)

Other possibilities are the Warlord (which gives off only a henchman vibe in this context) or the Bounty Hunter (which has a monkish vibe to it also in this context). Especially the Bounty Hunter. Think about it and you'll see that you know I'm right... ;-P

    3. No, I fully agree that canon is definitely not an issue but I just don't see him painted in gold ^^
I have a bunch of those guys so I'll consider which could fit in ! It won't be mr7 though ;)

  7. Please post them all in the Bazaar. ;-)

  8. Very nice! I think they work great together! The colour scheme aswell as the fact that the vast majority is by Jes Goodwin ties them all together. And as you said, the Lord Aquila has a noble feel about him, which works very nicely with the other miniatures.

    1. Noble he looks yes but one should always be careful about still waters...
The group seems to work even now it seems so i'm going to continue that way then !

      thanks !

  9. Once again, lovely work. I think they fit into your chaos band nicely. In particular, the archer's helmet looks suitably sinister. The Lord Aquila's armour is not out of place in the group, and he's got the winged helmet thing going on, like the other guy. Enough going on there to tie them into the group.

    1. Funny thing with metallic paints is that depending on lighting it can change to the extreme, the model seen in hand is extremely light and far less sinister but I actually like that a lot, to see a model change appearance depending on how you look at it, it suits the Lawful gods perfectly doesn't it?
      Thanks !

    2. Indeed! For me it's the shape of the helmet - particularly the faceplate, that gives it the ominous look

    3. There is some evil in this skull mask I agree !

  10. I've run out of gushing adjectives for your work JB :)

You never cease to amaze me with your painting output. It's always to a high standard, with a rockin back story & you keep on bangin'em out like...like....? I dunno....like your a bloody gun!!!

    Cheers buddy :)

    1. Well, just consider I had to stay at home (sick) and just had to copy the same PJ I had done on the other 4 plus I haven't devloped the backstory behind those guys much (for now). Geting positive feedback from the likes of you is also a tremendous motivation I have to say.
Anyway, it feels great to get things done really !
Oh and I'll even have a batrep (or 2) after the coming WE !

  12. I've always been a fan of the Lord Aquila mini, you got it pefect, I must say. I love the metals you achieved in both minis, they look gorgeous. And you got that being sick at home? Man, what are you gonna do when fully recovered!!

    1. I have to say I really love the metals on those, they're totally unrealistic but they shine a lot and change colour depending on light and I think it suits the model fine.
Now I'm back to work so I'll probably not post 3 times in a row ! (and I have a game this WE to prepare).

Anyway, it's nice to see them welcomed like this !

  13. A great selection of models painted to your usual high standards. I have about five of those "Heroic Fighters", but have so far only painted one. They're a great bunch of models and I look forward to getting around to the rest of them.

    1. I've just based Gladius on my last Hex base (never would have thought I'd need more of them in my life) but the moonduke and Sir Brut will have to wait, they might not fit into how the band is developping...
Thanks for the kind words, I think the next additions should please people ;)

  14. Brilliant work on that armour! I especially love the blue glow that comes out of their visors. It really brings them all together. This war-band is really the tops.

    1. I'm really pleased with that light touch of blue that bonds them all together. As the gold is voluntarily shiny with the off-white being a little punchy too, I wanted to add a bit of cold colour but in a subtle way.

      Thanks !

  15. Great work on the lot of them. Yours are much better than the original paint jobs. :)

    1. Well I have seen some of the originals at Warhammer world and the painting level can't be compared believe me. ^^
My only asset is that I've opted for a coherent paintjob that ties them and uses the group effect to work.

      Thanks !
