Looking for inspiration

As I'm finishing a few things right now, I will have some time to come back to my chaos space marine army fo which I still have quite a few things (namely 100 models) to do. One of the things I am not happy with is the iconography. I love the "all black" theme and will stick to it even though I realise I do lose the opportunity to go crazy on typical oldschool paintobs.
BUT, I have a lot of banners to add , some markings to add, and I can't figure out what I want.

For my warhammer force, I came up with satanist iconography stolen from CD covers and comics like requiem from Pat Mills (Slaine, Judge Dredd,...) and Olivier Ledroit (Chroniques de la lune noires, Sha,....). I have no personnal belief in such stuff an ddon't mean to offend anyone with it but I thought it was the best to cme up with since Chaos is basically the most evil you can get in the old world.

Here are some examples of how this was used in the army (These are old pics of old models but you get the idea) :

Now I've improved my painting skills, I'd like to find something else for the renegade army. The 2 ideas I've come up with so far are not to my taste :

It doesn't scream "Chaos" to me, I'm looking for something really nasty but can't figure out what...

Any ideas?

  1. I like the idea of a banner as an icon, a focus for the rage the troops feel towards their enemies, perhaps as a portal for their god to to stare balefully upon their foe, and also for the god to regard his followers. Medieval banners were signifiers on battlefields to show where a person of import was or to show where the members of his following were located. They would have bared his symbols and his arms. Maybe think about an badge or image that relates to the warlord of your army with variations for each unit based around appeasing their god as well as scaring the beejeezus out of your enemy.

    1. I'm entirely with you on this one. I want it to be a focus point , like a manifest, I want my banners to be decorative but the key point is to throww at your foe's face "THIS IS WHO I AM"
I think you' are right, I should probably start with what I want to say with them before thinking about how...

      Thanks

  2. There are some pretty nice oldschool banners you could use as an inspiration. Those gloomy bleeding eyes on a red background are quite unnerving. Bats and skeletal birds could also be quite iconographic, as well as snakes or any beast...
    Just silly ideas!

    1. Yep, sure thing. But I want something particular you don't find in every army... I'll test a few things to see what comes out...

      Thanks Suber

  3. Great looking Chaos guys! But those Harpie-creatures! Yikes! Those are so sick and scary and so brilliant! Nicely done! As for banners, for some reason I never liked the look of the 3rd Edition era style of banners. Heresy, I know. But I prefer simpler banners which, like you and Whiskey Priest describe, boldly announce the unit and inspire them without distracting them. I think the banners you chose for your Warriors suit them very well.

    1. Yep, I'll try the blunt approach ;) There are 5 harpies but I only showed 3 since I lacked place. Maybe I'll give some bit of info about my chaos army to explain where these come from.

      Thanks Private.
